If anyone's looking for a good way to store and manage recipes, I recommend Paprika - and it's on offer for Black Friday. I keep meaning to write up a post about it, but I've been using it for years and it's excellent. https://www.paprikaapp.com/

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@sophie looks good - is this the one that has it's own special markdown-like syntax for writing recipes?

I use one called Mela from the same person who makes Reeder (RSS) - iOS/iPadOS/MacOS only I think. It's pretty good for casually saving recipes - I'm not a heavy user - although has less features than Paprika I think.

<super-slider enhanced="✨"></super-slider>

https://begin.com/blog/posts/2023-11-10-head-toward-the-light-dom

This is cute, but wouldn’t it be better to just use a boolean attribute? This just unnecessarily introduces potential confusion about code like enhanced="false".

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@simevidas yeah seems a bit unnecessary - I guess they wanted something likely to be unique or maybe even extensible in future.

I was wondering whether emoji constitutes a valid attribute name in itself. Like:

<super-slider ✨></super-slider>

💥 👀 New feature: Site Mounting!

Site Mounting helps users who manage multiple sites with common components — or anyone who has (until now) been relying on Git submodules, build hooks, or custom APIs to manage their site dependencies.

@zachleat shares how to use Site Mounting to share components across multiple sites.

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@cloudcannon @zachleat so is this like an alternative to "theme" functionality using NPM modules? I'm assuming this is a CloudCannon exclusive (hosting/deployment) feature and not something that can be used with any host?

What is the best domain registrar? And which domain name generator would you suggest to people looking for a domain name? (Asking for my newsletter subscribers 😉)

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott so NameCheap has always served me well - although I moved all my existing domains to Cloudflare registrar. Last domains I bought were using Spaceship.com (which I think is backed by NameCheap) because I got a good discount via https://tld-list.com/

Amazon have been experimenting with their return options lately (in the UK) today I was only offered drop off at post office and the only locations were 102 miles away - it's like they hope you will just keep the items…

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@Chris in their defence, I think it was just a bug - normally we have a lot of choice - like Amazon Lockers (automated drop off points), Postal Service pickup, and various other options. I found that if I change my reason for the return to "incompatible for intended purpose" instead of "not needed" I could then schedule a free pickup. We also usually have an option for an Amazon counter return, but I've yet to see an Amazon counter near us (and we don't live anywhere remote)

My father passed away Thursday. I feel weird posting about it because most of you never met him.

But I talked a lot about his care over the last few years. People have asked about him and our family. So I know people who didn't know him have followed along. I always appreciated your concern and support.

He was a kind, funny, and generous person. He was a great dad. I miss him.

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

I'm so sorry @grigs - when my mother past away I was similarly uncomfortable with mentioning it on social media, but I think the thing many of us have forgotten is social is as much for support and mutual connection as it is marketing and self-promotion. Feelings and emotions should always be welcome and certainly you are welcome sharing these things with me and I think the rest of your followers too. Warmest condolences Jason.

@zachleat Elizabeacon - I like it haha. Would be even cooler if beacon sent HEAD requests!

Other options you could have gone with:

Mmm...beacon

Sir Francis Beacon (his famous motto; "bene visit qui bene latuit - one lives best by the hidden life" seams to make some sense for analytics)

@Chris @chriscoyier for comparison this appears to be pricing in the UK (for Wegovy):

This is the private purchase price in the UK and not an NHS subsidised price.

scrwd,

@paul Josh Comeau built a custom thing (https://www.joshwcomeau.com/react/next-level-playground/) using Sandpack (https://codesandbox.io/blog/announcing-sandpack-2) and if you want to try running a whole node container in the browser you could they also have something called Nodebox. StackBlitz also brought about "WebContainers" which are what they sound like (https://blog.stackblitz.com/posts/webcontainer-api-is-here/)

I'm a strong advocate that today web apps can be just as slick and powerful as native apps - if done right.

But this is a hard argument to make in the face of most people's experience of web apps on mobile and other devices which, frankly, is mostly garbage.

How do you deal with this preconception in your discussion with management and exec?

Got any great examples of complex web apps that feel native? Teams that are really holding the web to the same quality bar as native?

Can’t wait for the “actually LLMs are a worthless scam” articles in 2025 and all the people that pretend they never fell for it

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs whilst I agree with you, I also agree with you "useful to me" comment. Sometimes code docs are not great or easy to navigate - by asking a LLM to explain how to do something it often surfaces stuff that was near impossible to find with regular search (in my experience) HOWEVER, it is often wrong and has a tendency to believe everything it has "read" on the internet so typically nothing works properly without extra effort - but it does provide some extra clues in some cases.

Just launched: the initial version of Postmarks, a new ActivityPub platform that lets you save, tag and share bookmarks on the Fediverse! More info on my blog: https://motd.co/2023/09/postmarks-launch/

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@casey this seems so cool, I love the old style del.icio.us vibe!!! I do have a naïve question however, to which I'm sure there is an excellent answer. What is the benefit of having the website be an instance using ActivityPub rather than just using the API to post to my existing fedi/mastodon account? Self-ownership? Or something more?

scrwd,
@scrwd@mastodon.social avatar

@casey thanks for the reply - self-ownership is increasingly super important and I going to dig into how you have accomplished what you have when I have some time.

My lovely wife is looking for her first job as and and I would deeply appreciate a boost (here or on ) if you know someone who might be interested in hiring her.

I switched industries a couple years ago and it's tough to find your first job without any proper experience, took me 5 months. Maybe it will be faster for her. 🙂

Can check for job opportunities here https://www.sage.com/en-gb/company/careers/, and I would happily refer her should she find something she likes - just DM me on here (not LinkedIn - I barely check messages there)
