Business magazines love articles about CEOs shaking up their leadership teams. It’s exciting! It’s aggressive!! It’s shifting into transformation mode!!!

Almost never do they ask if a shakeup serves to weaken those the board may tap as an interim CEO, should things not work out.

shiftleftist,
@shiftleftist@hachyderm.io avatar

@raganwald shaking up the top and replacing modest performers with the CEO's loyalists also has a wonderful chilling effect that tends to silence dissent at all ranks and destroy bottom-up cultures nearly instantly

"But how does it scale?" is a common question for organizational transformation initiatives. The answer is that it scales primarily via enthusiasm and learning, not via structure or framework.

Example:

Let's say the required outcome is to move 100 people over 10 kilometers. Do you:

  1. Build a juggernaut that fits 100 people 🚚 - the "framework" approach
  2. Organize a 10km fun run and train people up 🏃 - the nimble, humane approach

The 10km run is the way

@matthewskelton I've been in funeral processions way longer than 5 km. So there's at least one other way

On one Slack: a person I like and respect comes out as an anti-masker.

On another Slack: someone (unrelatedly!) brings up the point that "expecting other people to change causes anxiety and eventually depression".

Well ain't that the truth ☹️

shiftleftist,
@shiftleftist@hachyderm.io avatar

@bitprophet Like, anti-universal masking or anti-anyone wearing a mask for health reasons?

There are some people who believe that every action by everyone around them is a coded message meant Just For Them. Narcissists will always exist, and letting them live rent-free is exactly how you both fuel their illness and empower them

401(k) termination fees are kind of a passive-aggressive slap in the face, when being terminated wasn't your idea.

shiftleftist,
@shiftleftist@hachyderm.io avatar

@bitprophet It's also very possibly a violation of fiduciary duty, given that a 401k probably does not contain unique or unpriced assets (ex. real estate, collectibles)

Never forget that nearly half of the Pentagon budget goes to private contractors.

Investigations show these companies make egregious profits overcharging DoD.

The Senate is now debating an $886 billion defense bill.

Let’s call it what it is: corporate welfare on steroids.

shiftleftist,
@shiftleftist@hachyderm.io avatar

@rbreich Hey, do you think your use of "corporate welfare" as a pejorative might be reinforcing the idea that welfare is something we shouldn't be funding? There's got to be a better term here.

How often do you go grocery shopping?

shiftleftist,
@shiftleftist@hachyderm.io avatar

@seldo We optimize for stuff that will stay fresh for a couple weeks. Decent leafy greens like arugala and baby spinach or whatever all need to be consumed within a few days, but there's plenty of other options from kale to iceberg that don't.

Many kinds of salad greens also don't take kindly to being crushed, and if you squish them in the drawer, they'll rot almost immediately. But if you baby them, they'll easily last a week or more
