🆕 blog! “Is it rude to make a profit from your friends?”

You're in a restaurant with a group of friends. The waiter won't let you split the bill, so you offer to pay for it on your card and have your friends send you their share. How much would you charge them for that service? That sounds absurd, right? OK, you might agree to split the […]

@Edent I have a similar feeling, but I'm not sure it's only "friendship". I also struggle to imagine how would I price my labor as a freelance. Curiously I have fewer issues with full time employment. I don't love to ask for raises but I have, even to bosses that are friends.

In other news, I am not surprised your post fared well on Threads but I'm a bit shocked at the vitriol of some replies. I take it those are drive by comments? Who would follow you and behave like that?

Whenever I, or someone else, posts a link to this blog on Mastodon, it DDoS's me and brings the site down for a couple minutes.

@kev varnish or another caching solution in front of your site generator might help. Note, this is local, not like cloudflare that I agree, would be icky.

@kev when you say "nginx sits in front of apache for cache" do you know for a fact that it caches?l and doesn't propagate all requests to apache (and php)? It's unusual to use nginx for that, I don't even know how (though I think it's possible)

Ideally for static content (including dynamic pages that can be cached for a while) you should not even hit php in the backend. Hence all the people shouting "varnish".

@kev oh ok... It says that 😅
If you can see the apache logs, the test would be querying the same page several times and seeing that apache only logs it once. If that's the case, I'm really underestimating the volume of traffic...

It's no fun having , woke up to a very low blood sugar. Luckily I woke up. Could've been very dangerous.

@martijn wow, do you have somebody to check on you in case it gets bad? I'm sorry to hear. The last sentence makes me worried.

@martijn I'm glad! Take care!

And just as one starts wondering how huge all those rocks may be, a "banana for size" kind of image drops in to break the illusion.

's wheels are about 35 cm wide.

@65dBnoise my brain is telling me that I am looking at rocks and tracks left by a gigantic vehicle.
No banana can shake that feeling.

Further evidence that people should be required to have an Internet Licence.

@Edent I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. What's wrong with that review? They liked it 4/5, and their comment is that they had better expectations from what they read on the paper, which admittedly is not a lot of info, but it's still an opinion.
Or is the problem with "Four Stars" in the subject line?

My absolute favorite "license required" experience on Amazon is when people answer customer questions with "no idea, sorry". I always suspected that they are prompted to answer somehow.

How do people run these days?
I'm spoiled by years of managed DB and object storage, running things stateless as much as I could.

I have to migrate some wordpress sites that I attempted, some 7 years ago, to make "stateless" but I have come to hate my solution as unmaintainable.

wp-content and DB ok, I can find a place to put them, but WP itself and its plugins are...not sure, it feels icky to maintain them as pets.

I'm looking into the module for wp
