Latest follow-up podcast is out! YouTube: https://youtu.be/rfYpCM_GAu8 Audio: https://share.transistor.fm/s/3377e538 Matt and Sean are joined by Paul Braren, from TinkerTry.com, to talk about Tesla Solar Roof vs. regular solar panels. Why go with one over the other and is it even worth it?

simplenomad,
@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@mattferrell Yup, every place, every state, is different on so many levels that anything new will vary widely between state borders here in the USA particularly when it comes to anything related to inspections and regulations. I don't think a lot of people outside of the USA understand how independent individual states here try to be from each other.

For energy, I am fortunate living in Texas with a lower cost of living and literally dozens of choices in power companies, assuming you put aside that whole winter of 2021 thing 😉 . For most other things, I am less fortunate because, well, I live in Texas....

Why yes, I live in Tarrant County and "evil" threatens me, but don't worry, the Tarrant Appraisal District said a prayer for "good". Much quicker than any audit or assessment!

I think one of the problems with Twitter was that I had to follow a TON of accounts to get to the information I wanted. I was dealing with the algorithm or whatever, so to get a relevant post or thread a chunk of something had to float by, so I had to cast a wide net. Here on Mastodon I’m following less than half the number of accounts, I have a quarter of the followers, but a high level of signal and way more engagement.

I’m glad I deleted the bird site account, and while it is possible that some time in the future Mastodon might evolve into something less useful (thinking the equivalent of The September That Never Ended for you old school folks), for now I am enjoying the hell out of it and hope this lasts a long time.

So work has been interesting as of late. Have you ever been told your job is evolving/changing yet when you look over what you are going to be doing, you're fundamentally going to be doing the exact same thing? I think the only difference is that I will have slightly more freedom. Yes seemed like there is always going to be work and challenges, but if you like the work AND they give you more freedom, well that's awesome.

simplenomad,
@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@WarySec It may end up being both for me, but since I like the work and paperwork is a strength, I wouldn't mind it - especially for the extra freedom.

Just watched the latest video from @mattferrell which is extremely timely for me. I posted a blog post earlier today where I mentioned I was wanting to get a heat pump water heater, and a few hours later Matt posted this: https://youtu.be/abGiNL9IT54?si=w_GyCuD47w4Yn-H4

@mattferrell A question for you that’s kind of related to this video as you mention the high cost of grid energy in Mass, like $0.30 a kWh. Is that an “average” rate for a 24 hour period or just the average price when you’re actually pulling from the grid? I ask because my energy company listed average price on my monthly bill based upon when I download it only, as rates vary depending on time of day. As a result my major “hit” is in the mornings before the sun is high enough to cover load (evening is all batteries, so all good). Anyway just curious.

simplenomad,
@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@mattferrell Ouch. That stings. I guess one advantage of living in a crazy state with several dozen power companies is at least rates here are somewhat competitive.

Four short grid outages overnight, 1000 homes nearby had an outage due to a construction-related misstep, nearby short outages as a part of the repair/recovery process. I knew about it only because the printer is not on the critical load circuit, and as the grid came up it would power on automatically each time. The first time I thought I'd somehow been hacked and ran in to check the printer for a ransomware demand being printed out (yeah I know, give me a break, this was from a dead sleep) but then got a message on my phone that the grid was back up after an outage. Second time the dog barked at the printer. Third and fourth time the dog and I slept through it. Critical load circuits had no issues.

I filed a FOIA to the FBI to disclose Sabus Twitter DMs from his time as an FBI sting operation a while ago (https://www.muckrock.com/foi/united-states-of-america-10/twitter-dm-history-of-hector-monsegur-sabu-with-halvarflake-137919/?), but the reply was "can't confirm nor deny existence". Clearly the FBI must've had these records (they reviewed and monitored Sabus comms).

Is there a way to appeal?

simplenomad,
@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@HalvarFlake You can try repeating the search with broader terms, and they might lead to clues to additional future searches. Minor success with that approach for me, hopefully it will help. And if you can make a decent enough “case” you could ask the @eff for help or at least advice. Even a hallway conversation with some of the EFF at the next con you’re both at could give you some ideas. Good luck!

In spite of clouds today and yesterday, the panels produced enough juice to charge the batteries and handle the house load. Nice.

It's February and here in TX I've run the heater for below freezing temps earlier this month, and now the AC is on since it's coming up on 93F/34C. Man this is a fucked up winter. Remember, three years ago was this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Texas_power_crisis

Yet another quick rant about passwords....

The password is such a poor security measure that nearly all accepted and enforced standards state to use a second authentication factor that is NOT a standard. Stop yelling about SMS as a poor second factor unless you also yell about the FIRST factor. Think about it. Kill the password. Hardware tokens coupled with a biometric - two great authentication factors we all accept now, way better than SMS which is way better than the password.

If you're going to argue, bitch, and complain about which non-password authentication methods are best, great. Let's just agree to kill the password

A fun thought for Friday.

A friend of mine told me about a visit to a lab where some scientists had been experimenting with cloning and whatnot, and they went into this area with a bunch of headless frogs lying on their backs attached to probes and wires. When asked what they were doing, the answer was one word - "practicing".

The AT&T is region by region being corrected so now it is our job as nerds to wildly speculate on the cause. While I think it is most likely a corrupt config/routing table update, an expired domain, or the usual DNS thing, my personal wild guess is the Chinese government testing their backdoors. Anyone else have a “good” guess? Bonus points for an extraterrestrial scenario.

simplenomad,
@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@miah Well of course! I mean when you think about it logically there is no other answer.

IF I were paying for electricity for charging my it would still be less than half the cost to fuel my old hybrid (which got 50 mpg), but I only charge on sunny days and I make sure the draw by the charger doesn’t exceed the energy of the panels. Benefits of a setup for the and the EV charger. Thank you Ra, Sun God, whose existence I now believe in because you almighty Ra fuel my trips to Starbucks.

@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@glenn Dude I hear you. Yeah the current EV trucks are decent, some can haul a lot (e.g. Ford F150 Lightning) but the range... If you had to tow 2K miles the time added to charge 7-8 times would be insane.
