is this 'foo@example.org' in the account migration settings supposed to show that you have to leave the @ symbol off? does it matter?

smitten, to random

you should call it federick to be more respectful

if I were eugen & friends I would move the QT rollout to the front of the line right now, and I would push full text search out this week. we are still very much in the zone of possibility here

smitten,

@seachanger why is it so hard? just do it the same as other platforms. :blobcatgrimacing:

initial report from setting up a server -

my Federated feed is being spammed by tens of thousands of posts from mastodon servers I don't even follow,
and I can't get any calckey or akkoma instances to send me stuff.

smitten,

@victor @freakazoid I think we figured it out. It's discovering users, then fetching their pinned posts with replies, then fetching the pinned posts of the reply-ers, etc etc.

Okay I'm not a computer security expert by like any means, but I find it REALLY suspicious that an admin, checks notes...

  • Had the kolektiva database and all the information within it in a plain text state that just happened to coincide with the time that this person got raided by the FBI.

  • That also the FBI had the appropriate warrants to get into their computer, and access this information.

  • That one would need to put a database in plain text in order to troubleshoot issues with it.

  • That the admin got raided for "participating in a protest"**.

** Don't get me wrong, I know that the government does very shady shit to punish people for protesting, but I doubt they would get a warrant signed by a judge to go raid a person's home even if they actually participated in a riot and set a police car on fire.

I'm very very cautious about snitch jacketing anyone, but snitching or a perfect storm of carelessness & dishonesty seems the best way to explain this by preponderance of the evidence.

Either way, switch instances now if you're on there.

smitten,

@salad_bar_breath Yeah the local copy part is the weirdest bit to me. even if you had to figure out a db bug, it would be easier to mess with it on the remote server. maybe they wanted to feed it into a nicer db client locally so they pulled it down. there's always been some really suspicious moderation choices there

smitten, to random

the kolektiva news is very disappointing and I hope no one has an investigation started on them because of that file. but it's not like the feds struggle to get copies of these things, they could have gotten one another way. assume anything posted on fedi is public, and anything hosted in the US has been read by feds. don't fedpost on fedi?

smitten, to random

I am messing around with my instance and I federated with a single server, and now my 'known network' feed is full of posts, from people I don't follow. I didn't realize it worked that way. do servers just forward absolutely everything they hear about? can I make it stop?

smitten,

@nuz I always assumed the Federated timeline was made up of who people on the server followed. or maybe the Public feeds of the servers that people here followed.

smitten,

@nuz ok it seems to have stopped... wtf. like 6k came through

smitten,

@nuz I don't think so?
this is the most recent one that came thru
https://mstdn.party/@HCBunny/110631462924620146

you don't seem to even have interacted with it

smitten,

@nuz still coming in lol, up to 11k now. again many of them are 4 or 5 days old. nothing beyond a week, but that's the default setting to reject older than

smitten,

@victor @nuz I set to reject everything overnight and it seems to have stopped. I'll try to prune these out of the database at some point, need to learn how that command works. it really is a firehose, why would I want all these??

all aboard the toxic gossip train

(I'm so sorry I keep posting about this, I cannot stop thinking about it)

smitten,

my facebook mom's group told me you can use raw potatoes to pull out the toxins from your gossip

I'm the kind of millennial who was in high school during the 00's, which means nearly every situation I encounter causes a Mitch Hedberg joke to spontaneously appear in my mind

I like 'trunk' for the main git branch because it brings a little bit of the natural world into the process. we already call them 'branches'

philsherry, to accessibility

When I join a new project and I hear the following phrase:

“Accessibility isn’t in scope for the initial release…”

I’m almost numb to it. But when people constantly parrot that line back at me, like mindless drones who don’t understand anything outside of what they’re programmed to know, I get very fucked off and want to put them all in the bin.

Accessibility isn’t a “feature” that needs “scoping” FFS.

All people are in fucking scope, all the fucking time.

smitten,

@tess @philsherry @miclgael
Completely agree. So often these 'scope' lines are drawn only around conversations that aren't allowed to be had, versus actual measurable work. Should we implement an inaccessible design, or an accessible one? am I allowed to ask? Should we care about semantic HTML or implement in incorrectly? am I allowed to ask?

it's not that the implementation changes that much, but it's the dismissal of concerns that they are really fighting for. (not to mention undoing and redoing the work later is additional work)

fedi drama is hard but there's a lot of people I don't associate with in real life too

smitten,

@scarlett that part surprised me, usually it's some mastodon admin I never heard of

smitten,

@scarlett @daviddd
snowdin and snug.moe defederating from disqordia. but more generally I'm also referencing that it's been a heavy fedi drama week - universeodon, mastodon.art, I think other ones that I'm forgetting

    I believe it's "Create Activity" 🥱
    but yeah Lemmy and kbin can't even agree on the names of the groups, it's either Community or Magazine. but I think they are the same as what other projects call Groups?

    smitten,

    @victor @usernameswift @scarlett
    for shitcreating activity

    smitten,

    @victor @usernameswift
    it doesn't bother me, I will say 'subtoot' instead of subpost. and "send toot" is a good replacement for the "send tweet" meme.
