Why is the whole / dependency management system such a mess? Cryptic warnings all over the place, non-deterministic behavior, n different module systems and dependency management tools - crazy.

With and e.g. I never have any of these problems. It's also complex, sure, but in general it works really rock solid for me.

My (EU-based) bank tried that also once but obviously the protest was big enough that they stopped that pretty fast again.

So, in case anyone still thinks that patching and security in general is not so important nowadays: Found already several tries of exploiting the recent critical CVE-2023-7028 vulnerability in the logs of my GitLab instance although it was only published a few days ago.

Conclusion:
✅ Install security updates literally ASAP.
✅ Turn on mandatory 2FA for all users.

Cloudflare should be avoided at all costs, and not only because of their political views but also because it's yet another layer of centralization threatening the free web with bullshit like "Checking if the site connection is secure" or "You're using Browser? Bad luck for you, fuck off". When I was still following I found it always super silly when fedi admins were telling proudly that their decentralized Mastodon instance is now behind CF. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Die #Hochschulen begeben sich in eine selbstverschuldete Unmündigkeit, wenn ihre Öffentlichkeitsarbeiter:innen die Plattformen antidemokratischer Milliardäre bespielen, statt sich am Aufbau des Fediversums zu beteiligen – des selbstverwalteten, wirklich sozialen Netzwerks der Zukunft.

Accounts auf Mastodon-Instanzen wären ein guter 1. Schritt.

Im 2. Schritt sollten Hochschulen Fediverse-Instanzen selbst betreiben.

Ich arbeite an der #UniBielefeld in einem Team, das eine der größten wissenschaftlichen Suchmaschinen (@base) betreibt. Für einen Verein betreibe ich nebenher Fediverse-Instanzen (Mastodon und PeerTube). Gern würde ich das auch für meine Uni tun.

Wegen all dem bin ich ein Erstunterzeichner des offenen Briefs an die #HRK mit der Forderung #UnisInsFediverse! Unterschreibt die Petition: https://www.openpetition.de/petition/online/appell-an-die-hochschulrektorenkonferenz-zur-nutzung-sozialer-medien

@chpietsch An der Stelle auch gerne erwähnt: Die Älteren werden sich evtl. noch erinnern, dass, als das Internet noch vergleichsweise frisch war, die Universitäten ein ganz zentraler Bestandteil desselben waren, da sie einen wesentlichen Teil der Infrastruktur ausgemacht haben und dort auch die Kompetenz war. Insofern besonders traurig, wenn es heutzutage nicht mal für einen Mastodon-Account reicht.

I just deployed the alternative Phanpy UI for hear-me.social. I much prefer using Phanpy to using the Mastodon UI. It is a wonderful alternative UI.

Why I like Phanpy:

The ability to see the entire threaded conversation in a block in the correct order is a fantastic improvement.

The ability to see boosts set apart in their own block is also great. I can skim to see what I want to read, or just skip over them if I'm rushing.

If you have accounts on other servers, you can link to them as well and switch between them within the same app.

The UI just looks much nicer.

There are other nice touches.

I deployed it to a small instance (2GB, 1vCPU), and I'll see if I need to resize it. It seems to need minimal resources.

This is a beta deployment.
