Hi Fediverse,

if you are a / user and use it as your IDE, how do you manage your configuration? Are you doing everything from scratch by yourself, or are you using a distribution/script like , , , any other?

As of now, I use NeoVim but with my old VimScript style config from Vim. As some thinks broke, thinking about switching to a different way of managing my NeoVim configuration and probably switching to Lua for this, but am lazy doing everything by hand!

So nothing tremendous ;-)

> Which programming language you no longer use and why?

My answer would be COBOL. It was a weird part of my life. It is over now. No, need to cry over it. LOL. What about you?

@nixCraft Microsoft QBASIC! Really.... because.. yes, no need anymore to use it :-)

[1/2] Reminder: oversells “incognito mode” so everyone misunderstands it. It has nothing to do with or on the Internet. All it does is stop history, cookies, databases and cache to your own computer's long-term storage. Same for ’s InPrivate and ’s and ’s private browsing.

Sites and apps can and do still track what you do and where you come from, both in the real world geographically and when you click on links from other sites.

@snonux@fosstodon.org avatar

@mjgardner @torproject Yeah, quite scary. Sometimes, I think we already live in a world as described in George Orwell's 1984. It's not just browser tracking, it's also all the stock Android and iOS phones and likely also all the major operating systems such as macOS and Windows, who send telemetry "home". Even with "secure" mobile operating systems like GrapheneOS or SailfishOS your mobile provider can (and probably is) tracking your movement (cell connection..).

Are you still using the official Mastodon app? You don't have to!

There are loads of brilliant third party apps which work with your existing Mastodon account.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook etc, Mastodon uses open standards, which means third party apps can do everything the official apps do and more.

There are links to third party apps on the official Mastodon site, just scroll down past the official ones:

➡️ https://joinmastodon.org/apps

Click on Android, iOS etc to narrow down the app selection.

The secret ingredients to getting code to work are:

  1. anger 😠

  2. hate 😡

  3. coffee ☕

  4. lots of music 🎶 in the background.

Nice, .foo domains are open for general registration now! But there's a problem! I don't need yet another domain! But still, I am trying to find a reason to register one! Clearly, I am a Domain junkie.

snonux,
@snonux@fosstodon.org avatar

I was also thinking of registering gemtexter.sh Domain for Gemtexter, my static site and blog generator written in But it's too expensive, and for approximately 10 users it's not worth it!

snonux,
@snonux@fosstodon.org avatar

@AAMfP yeah, Codeberg Pages works with custom domains, you would still need to buy that custom domain and pay for it every year.

Holy shit, @protonmail just doubled my base storage to six terabytes for , , etc. I’m only using a little over 16 GB.

Granted I’ve been a paid subscriber since the summer of 2016 (first on their Plus plan, then on Visionary starting the following year). But this is ridiculous.

@mjgardner One thing I miss at ProtonMail is a family plan, where I can share a domain name across multiple accounts (e.g., so that my spouse and (future) kids can also have an NAME@LASTNAME.org address). A former colleague of mine is now a Product Manager at protonmail, already provided him with this wish. Other than that, I can also highly recommend ProtonMail :-). Have been running my own MTAs for years previously, there's so much pain in it.

snonux,
@snonux@fosstodon.org avatar

@mjgardner @protonmail But the business one would still be more expensive per user than my current Plus plan. Not a big issue, would have been a nice to have, though. My spouse can keep using her free account.

snonux,
@snonux@fosstodon.org avatar

@mjgardner @protonmail That was quick (or coincidence)!

The .zip TLD sucks, and it needs to be immediately revoked. My take: it doesn't matter these days despite having a valid concern.

sudo and su being rewritten in Rust for memory safety. But there is also 's doas. It's in C, but much simpler than sudo and I think also hardened with OpenBSD specific syscalls. https://linux.slashdot.org/story/23/05/01/0020239/sudo-and-su-are-being-rewritten-in-rust-for-memory-safety
