If I were looking to #DeGoogle my life; how do people rate (paid-for) @protonprivacy services (calendar/mail/drive)?

My main concerns are #security and #privacy.

Please ONLY share your opinions on #Proton.

If you insist on sharing other opinions, I only want to hear them if they pertain to
#FullyManaged #CloudStorage with #E2EE that is reasonably priced.

I will accept absolutely no requirement to self-host or self-maintain, no matter how 'easy' you think it is. I have money, not time.

The security camera company has emailed everyone to say that they are introducing a "Fair usage policy" to their plans because they noticed that a number of accounts are using a lot of .

So, what is considered "fair usage" of a cloud subscription you pay £11/month for?

It's going from an unlimited number of 30 second clips over 30 days, to a limit of 60 clips at 30 second each over 30 days.

Or, you pay an additional £13 per camera per month, on top of the £11.

@matt@oslo.town avatar

Now, I get that is not free and it's certainly not cheap.

However, this is just a problem that they are shoving on to their customers.

The cameras have a local storage option - but you can't tell them to only save to local storage. You have to use the cloud.

There are also no options for how long clips should be kept for. Everything is 30 days unless you decide to manually delete it, one-by-one.

So, of course people are racking up lots of clips online.

I have a NAS that I use to backup my devices. Now I want to periodically backup that NAS to some cloud storage.

There would be many uploads and very rarely (hopefully never) downloads. So uploads and storage should be cheap, but it's OK if downloads are expensive.

What software and host/cloud providers do you folks recommend? I want to encrypt the data before uploading.

Terrible user experience: Downloading or uploading a large number of files to or from #CloudStorage services like #DropBox and #OneDrive; I regret taking on this task.

Another item to add to my increasing feeling that I no longer love I.T. support.

I've been thinking of switching from Sync to pCloud - mainly to consolidate my family's separate cloud storage and to serve as a good home for video materials for projects.

The 10TB Family plan is a steep up-front, but seems worthwhile.

Anyone have issues with it? Anyone love it? Thoughts?

Hey @protonmail! It looks like your Drive Plus plan has the highest annual subscription price per GB amongst similar offerings: 24 cents/GB, compared to Tresorit's 14 cents/GB and Sync.com's 5 cents/GB.

Would you consider increasing the storage available on your plans while keeping current prices?

400-500 GB for Drive Plus and 1 TB for Unlimited would look fairer to me 🙂

Annotated screenshot from https://tresorit.com/pricing displaying how a yearly Personal plan costs $143.88 per year and offers 1 TB of storage, meaning the subsciption costs $0.14388 per gigabyte.
Annotated screenshot from https://www.sync.com/pricing-individual/ displaying how a yearly Solo Basic plan costs $96 per year and offers 2 TB of storage, meaning the subsciption costs $0.048 per gigabyte.

Considering adding a cloud storage solution as an alternate cold storage mirror of about 40TB of drives.

Any recommendations? Feels like I’m going in circles trying to find a decently priced vendor with a viable interface.

Does any know of a good backup solution for media files? I was trying to get backups to sync with Hetzners storage share system but doing it via WebDav is sorta slow with multiple files + encryption.

It works fine for database backups, just not the media files/folder.

Before anyone suggests AWS, I don't feel comfortable using an Amazon owned product/service for anything mastodon. I'd rather support someone smaller if possible.

Just tried migrating from Google to as Mastodon's S3 backend.

Unfortunately allowing public access to media requires either managing DNS through CF or being limited to a managed domain which is rate-limited and not intended for production use.

It's a shame because it would be much cheaper.
