It's simple: if you are making a fan game project, just don't share it publicly until it's completely finished. I'm tired of seeing so many promising romhacks and fan games get this treatment. You can't trust any game company to support your endeavors, even Valve who has historically been pro-remix culture.

spinning_bird,

@rootcompute Wouldn't it have been shut down nevertheless even if he had only shared it after it was finished?

I wonder , is the enjoyment of a game always colored by when it was released?
For example, I played some Portopia Serial Murder Case, a game originally from '83 and it was interesting to see the roots of the genre.
So I'm enjoying it. But is that really for the games own merits, or is it due to it's historical significance? I feel like if I found the exact same game as a free indie title, I wouldn't bother with it... which makes me feel a bit hypocritical to enjoy it.

I planned to go heavy PSI in my Prey playthrough, but they tell me my dear beloved turrets might hate me for it. Nooo way.

Probably hacking them would help, but now I more or less decided to not take any PSI powers, it makes me feel "pure" somehow.

Here I tried to depict my playstyle. Except I actually spend the majority of time hauling them around. And then in combat they fold up at the slightest touch.

@rootcompute @buru5 The article is a bit long winded in basically saying it's annoying to have an extra PlayOnline login.

But it IS annoying and unnecessary. When I was recently playing GTAV the "Rockstar Launcher" and Rockstar Social Club annoyed me as well. Each time I want to play I have to wait for the Rockstar Launcher to log in, and then in the main menu tell it I actually just want to play story mode. All because they want to push their unnecessary extra services onto people.

@jake4480 Coincidentally I watched some of Godzilla vs Mothra yesterday. That was from '64 if I'm not mistaken. I'd always thought Mothra originated from a Godzilla movie, but it seems that the vs movie came later!

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@jake4480 Oh nice. :D
I also watched King Kong vs. Godzilla recently, and it's such a tonal difference to the original '54 movie. Suddenly everything is fun and silly

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@jake4480
Shin Godzilla is remarkable because it goes back to the roots in that it primarily deals with actual events. What I mean is, Godzilla '54 was of course about the terror of the nukes, and now Shin Godzilla is about the 2011 tohoku earthquake more than anything else. It's not as "fun" as the other movies, but watching it was probably the closest I could ever get to what the original film must have felt like for people in '54. Very recommended.

The thing is that a well-known game will usually win vs. smaller games, if it's just about how many people vote for a game :/

I'm more surprised about Starfields "most innovative gameplay" 🤨

i'm experimenting with implementing an isometric perspective in Adventure Game Studio

this is all temped in programmer art while i figure out a style for the game

one of the frustrating things is having very little control over the depth sort. you can see several places where the water level and character sprites do not stack properly, making for a very weird perspective.

i either have to reconsider doing an isometric game, or perhaps ditching AGS completely. either one is not a super appealing prospect

An isometric 2d scene of a character in a scuba outfit. They flip a switch, and the water level rises.

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@vga256 I'm not sure if this is what you mean by "not stack properly", but when the water line is around the characters waist, their head should be in front of the water, but the legs not, right?

Can this even be solved with pure sorting of whole sprites? I don't know what the options are in AGS, but perhaps something like splitting the sprite in two at a certain point (one half covered by water, one not) or drawing some sort of overlay over the bottom half could work?

Gotta love how Grammarly is wanking about its AI tools and less about - y'know - REAL ways to help improve its proofreading and editing tools? Like better writing language/tone recognition? It'd be great if it's stuff made by real people and not some shit-ass bot.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds @Dinoracha I’m willing to bet though, Grammarlys user numbers saw a sharp decline the moment ChatGPT came around.
You can say what you will about LLMs, improving wording or diction is what they’re really good at. People at Grammarly probably felt pressured to catch up, after all their tools aren’t free like ChatGPT either.
If they don’t, they’ll be pushed out of business I’m sure.

One of my point & click plot ideas is about the staff of a company who unwittingly get involved in a violent mob conflict.

I tried making a storyboard for a possible opening, to get a better idea of the characters. Guess it turned into more of a comic, after all.

It's a single, very tall image. Let's see if this'll work..? Please tell me if you have trouble viewing it, then I'll chop it up and repost it as several smaller pages.

#pointandclick #ConceptArt #comic #storyboard

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

Now, this begs the question of how I'd adapt this into a point & click style game. The answer: This is why I never get anything done.

But it was a lot of fun as "goal oriented" practice (as opposed to random doodles). Still sloppy and inconsistent, but perhaps it's getting better? (The order of the panels isn't 100% the order I drew things in. I believe the later panels do look a bit better)

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@Dinoracha Ohh, why'd you delete it? Now I'm curious.

Gameplay wise, as far as point & click style games go, it would be light on puzzles and more about exploration.

But I thought it might be fun to have some optional puzzles. As in: crack the password on a colleagues computer, and you get to look at their browser history. :P

@jake4480 @elizach How tastes differ. I just finished folding up and stowing a pile of laundry, and I always find it kinda nice and relaxing.

Of course the setting must be right: Find yourself a comfortable place to sit, put on some music and treat it as the hands-equivalent to "going for a walk".
Hope this helps :D

Some footage of a prototype I've been chipping away at. I implemented walking, looking at things and basic interaction.

Mainly throwing things together to see how it looks and if I can get away with a 3-frame walk cycle.

Background is more or less placeholder. The way the perspective doesn't match between character and environment gives me pain. You'd think 2D point & click games would all have that problem, but I never find it so glaring in games like The Dig etc.

Some footage of a prototype point n click game, a character walking around a room, looking at stuff and opening the veranda door

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

Also, perhaps it's due to taking the 3-frame cycle and adding onto it, but somehow the feet pass by each other too quickly, it looks weird.There should be a frame where both legs are next to each other...

(Walking, or any kind of subtle motion is really more difficult than large, forceful motions. When you look up tips on animation, it's all about "spring" and "bounce", but that's hard to apply to person calmly walking along 🤔)

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@media_dept yes, rather than really holding on one entire frame, it’s probably easier to draw, say, one leg in (almost) the same place twice. That way, like you say, other parts like arms can continue moving smoothly.

I’m using Unity to put it all together

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@media_dept I do like it, too, which is why I emulated it as much as possible in this project. Also, the way its UI works is like the lingua franca for adventure game UIs. :D

If only I could find that font from AGS… it looks like the one all the LucasArts adventures use.
