@jake4480 @rootcompute @buru5 you’ve all probably seen posts by George Takei? He has tens of thousands of followers, and all he does all day is copypaste from Twitter …

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@rootcompute @jake4480 @buru5 I’d say the question isn’t so much wether there are right-wing people on a site (or network), rather than wether it’s possible to have a sensible discourse, despite differences in ideology.

I would hope that Mastodon, since there’s no algorithm, doesn’t reward “outrageous” content as much. So perhaps it could be possible to actually discuss ideas and opinions instead of screaming profanities

@media_dept@mastodon.social avatar

I must remember that with a walk cycle, the character is walking on the spot, they're not transporting their body, the game will do that. The animation is just them going through the motions - they're not going anywhere! Yet when I'm drawing I always hurl their body back & forwards, tilt their shoulders too far. I've done versions of two characters walking & they've both looked more like they're dancing. Its tempting to rewrite the games to be about dancers!

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@media_dept @Craigp You could also 2D animate them walking two steps while moving over the screen, and then in the end only pull each frame back on top of each other. If that makes sense.

Early in Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth you get a flight power-up.
I discovered how gamebreaking it is during Karla's boss fight. Sadly, I forgot to take screenshots of Deedlit hovering over her head for large portions of the fight, while Karla wastes magic on thin air.
So I drew a re-enactment.

The game is great controls and graphics wise, and Deedlit has a lot of fun (if overpowered) abilities. Just the level design and many enemies are a bit basic and repetitive

game idea: every time you restart/reload/resurrect/whatever, a shadow-you is created at the same level; this shadow-you believes they are the real-you and hunts you down until defeated. story twist at the end is that all of the "yous" are real-yous and it's like the Star Trek Teleporter Problem or something.

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@buru5 suppose you met your other you irl, what would the two of you do?

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@buru5 Something criminal. Because A: we could have the perfect alibi and B: I'd know my other me would have the same idea. So we'd just smile and wink at each other.

Actually a while ago I saw someone who, at least in passing, looked so much like me it might even have worked. It was eerie though.

Hrm.

Friend recommended a game.
It sounded awesome to me.
I look it up.
You play as a guy.
I immediately write the game off.

I then spend the next 2 hours analyzing why I reacted like that.

I think it's more than just a representation thing.

I think I have a real misandry problem.
I'm... Not sure how to counter this.
Like... Do I just keep repeating equality shit to myself on loop until it burns into my subconscious?

I knew I was kinda sexist, but yeah... those 2 hours revealed some real shit I'm not proud of.

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@Gwendolyn But, don't you play as a guy in most games? Do you write them all off because of that?

watching this video by some unknown who hasn't released a new video in 4 years and out of the blue i see what appears to be my 5th grade home economics class or: what i remember of it.

the teacher had some computers in the back for kids who finished assignments early and TYRIAN? i haven't seen or even thought of these sprites in literally 20-something-years.

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@buru5 @rootcompute 80k$? Isn't that a lot?

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@rootcompute @buru5 I looked up the most expensive places to live (in the US) and San Diego CA came up as the most expensive, with a median monthly rent of $1,842 and an average salary of $67k

(Still, San Francisco at #6 has a bit higher monthly rent of about 2k)

i am playing déjà vu for the first time and i seriously think i missed out on a crucial childhood experience 🤣

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@vga256 Wow, this came out in '85.
I've recently been looking into early point n click / adventure games, and this has the verbs of something like Maniac Mansion ('87), but the presentation of a Japanese adventure game, all while being released this early.

I wonder what those devs' influences were, or if systems like SCUMM took direct inspirations from those verbs.

Did you play this on an emulator?

I've gotten good at starting on something, getting it set up and ready to go. The part I'm struggling with, that I can't seem to push past, is taking the next step to improve, to learn and develop skills through repetition.

How do I motivate myself to embrace the tedious, unsexy process of self-improvement? I hope to get this figured out in 2024.

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@rootcompute Isn't starting something always the hardest part? Since you can do that, the repetition will come over time, won't it?

vga256, to retrocomputing
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

i don't think i've ever seen this documented anywhere, so here goes:

Myst was built with Apple Hypercard, using a ton of third-party extensions to pull off an extremely atmospheric first person experience.

what is less known is that because Myst is a hypercard stack, it is possible to load the game in black & white mode despite color being a stated system requirement. the result are scenes that have been dithered and posterized from 8-bit colour, down to 1-bit. they look almost like a silhouetted photograph of a georges seurat painting, eery and beautiful in their own way.

video/mp4

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@vga256 @edenwaith
There was also an earlier game, "The Manhole", from the people who later made Myst. It was apparently also made using Hypercard, and featured properly dithered 1bit graphics.
It looks very nice in my opinion.

Started playing again, it's been a while.
The early Fallouts are wonderful in that they give you a lot of options playing pacifist, but I watered it down to "totally unfit for combat".
(More thoughts on character setup in the alt-texts)

I'll try to limit save/load, so I'll have to be very careful with combat encounters, since when a companion dies I prohibited myself from reloading.

Failing a steal check makes the entire area hostile; still thinking about how to deal with that...

Stats for the main character Momo at Lvl2. Most combat stats are extremely low, but Int and Charisma are maxed. Agility helps with running away / not getting hit, and perception, while useful for shooting, is also generally helpful iirc. There are two NPCs that teach some unarmed combat in the early areas, so that's at 50%. I put the Skill Points from the first level up into Lockpicking, but still can't open some of the doors in the first town.

spinning_bird, to random
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

What if point and click games were instead called "Pick 'em up"?

Like shoot 'em up or beat 'em up, but since you often collect so many items...? The idea sprang into my head when I woke up in the middle of last night.

No? ... ok, maybe not.

spinning_bird,
@spinning_bird@mstdn.games avatar

@cadeybunny Then people can have heated discussions about whether it's a true pick 'em up or not.
