I'm @stefano and I am testing snac2 as another option for the BSD Cafe project.

Please, if you're interested in my posts, also follow my main account (@stefano). It's free 🙂

This account will be used to test the system by following many accounts and interacting to assess snac2's performance and scalability.

Have a great day!

I'm curious. What kind of volume are other people seeing in their object storage?

I'm running a brand new instance with about 3 active users so far and a relatively low volume of stuff on the federated timeline. However my storage bucket is at nearly 6GB after 4 days of the instance being up. 🤯

I haven't set up the media cache retention setting yet, which might be a big chunk of it. But I'm curious what number people put in there and what their bucket size looks like.

@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

Quite small on snac2 as it doesn't cache remote media.
On the Mastodon instance, purging remote media after some days, numbers of the storage aren't that high: less than 100 GB (more than 100 users)

@dziq it seems to be working

dziq, to random

Ok, I’ve setup my own instance. But I can't follow users from other instances with msg „cannot resolve user dziq@mammuthus.xyz to follow”. @stesnac do you have any suggestions?

stesnac,

@dziq looks like a dns problem...

Yesterday, while adding support for , I introduced a small bug that causes duplicate notifications on . My fault 🙂 I've already sent the PR with the fix to the developer.

Sorry about that.

All the jails have been upgraded to FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE.

Enjoy! 🙂

@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

Today, I'll be attempting to update all the jails still running on FreeBSD 13.2-RELEASE to FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE.
Some are already on 14.0 (Miniflux, Elasticsearch, nginx reverse proxy, the mail server, the wiki, snac), while BlendIT, Matrix and the other Mastodon jails (both primary and secondary, redis, postgresql) are still on 13.2. Since I encountered some issues during testing, I'll be stopping the jails one by one as I update them (to create a snapshot), so there might be some downtime today.

Don't worry, nothing unusual is happening – it's just me updating the coffee machines. 😄 ☕

I'll update the progress status here: https://status.bsd.cafe/status/bsdcafe

I consume 90% of the content I read online via RSS. Feedly on most platforms, read through Reader 5 on my apple devices.

It's still the single best way to read the internet.

@Daojoan I'm using Miniflux (and FreshRSS) on a self hosted installation. No apps, just a browser.

With the last commit (thanks to the patch provided by @jamesoff), Mona on iOS can now connect to the (updated) snac2 instances.

Testing if I can upload multiple images from tooot client :) with some recent images.

It seems to be working, but I think that's DDoSing your connection 🙂

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

It seems a bandwidth problem. Sometimes the VPSes say "1 gbit connection" but actually are really slow, especially when sending out stuff.
@OpenBSDAms is a very good choice, I like their approach and their way of operating.

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

As for migrating: just remember to add -H to rsync and everything will be ok (I've been moving files from NetBSD to OpenBSD to FreeBSD and back and snac2 didn't complain at all)

snac2 has reached version 2.44, which is stable and undoubtedly suitable for more comprehensive use.
In the coming days, I'll likely declare this instance as stable and include it in BSD Cafe's services. Plurality and choice are fundamental in a free world.

@stesnac ho installato un server FreeBSD. Esiste di certo modo di metterlo in cluster con altro server FreeBSD. Hai suggerimenti? Sto usando bastille per tirare su un server applicativo.

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

Ciao Giovanni, cosa intendi "in cluster"?

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

@unruhe Certo, cluster a livello software sono supportati alla perfezione. Ci sono inoltre soluzioni native lato firewall come il CARP, ecc.
Puoi fare tutto.

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

@unruhe Forse mancando la citazione non ti da le notifiche... credo che a volte snac non li metta

Finally found a native & client that works with ()) server instances - "tooot" and is free in the Apple AppStore.

When using such clients make sure to have the following proxy pass locations set on your reverse proxy:
/api/v1/
/api/v2/
/oauth/

@gyptazy @stefano @grunfink test from tooot!

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

@gyptazy @stefano @grunfink great, it works and it’s nice. I can’t see an option to avoid shooting boosts/replies (on Mastodon it’s native, on Tusky or Enafore it can be configured setting an option)

For those who are interested, here's a cpu load graph of the instance running on the Raspberry PI 4, last night.

@gyptazy @stefano @grunfink back to the VM. Performance is blazing fast!

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

At the moment, there are 7 users (not much active). I am following here 1104 accounts and I have 185 followers.
Put back into the VM, performance is excellent, but was good also on the Raspberry PI 4 (the limitation was the outbound bandwidth of my FTTC connection)

@gyptazy @stefano @grunfink it's interesting and promising. I've found that Tusky on Android is an excellent mobile experience with snac2. I've tried with some iOS apps, but none of the ones I've tried have been able to login.

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

Some posts, with 128 threads - fast but cpu intensive for a RPI4

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

I'm going to try it now

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

@grahamperrin surely it is. But I can't find the 50 processors sentence. Where did you notice it?

stesnac,
@stesnac@snac.bsd.cafe avatar

@grahamperrin the graph is a percentage of (all) cpu usage, not the number of CPUs

The number of instances based on has been on the rise in recent days.
When looking at the statistics, it appears that the (still in testing) instance of BSD Cafe is currently the most populous.
Can I proudly say we're the largest (snac) instance? 😉

@gyptazy @stefano @grunfink I'm afraid that with my tests and related posts, well-received by the tech community, the growth of snac2 instances might be partly my fault. 🤣
