I'm @stefano and I am testing snac2 as another option for the BSD Cafe project.

Please, if you're interested in my posts, also follow my main account (@stefano). It's free 🙂

This account will be used to test the system by following many accounts and interacting to assess snac2's performance and scalability.

Have a great day!

"How it all began"

I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.

My today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.

This is a photo of the back cover of the "InfoMagic LINUX Developer's Resource CD-ROM" case. The cover lists the contents of the 6-CD set, including distributions like Red Hat 3.0.3 "Picasso", Slackware 3.1, Debian GNU/Linux 1.1.4, and others, with various kernel sources up to version 2.0.12+. It mentions the inclusion of a "QuickStart" installation guide and additional software like X-Free86 Version 3.1.2, with references to online resources. There's also information about the included on-line documentation like "Installation & Getting Started Guide" by Matt Welsh and "Network Administrators Guide", as well as file format details. Contact information for InfoMagic, including telephone, fax, email, and web address, is listed, along with the company's address in Flagstaff, AZ. A barcode is present on the bottom right. The text indicates the product is from 1996, providing a glimpse into the distribution of Linux software in the mid-1990s.

Introducing a new style for #snac called "Next". Slightly more compact, light and dark mode, with icons.

You can change the colors in the :root block.

I want to launch a hashtag where, every Tuesday, I'll post a message and it would be great if it became a habit for many.

In a world full of conflicts, selfishness, and egocentrism, it would be nice to focus on the good that others do, what makes our lives better thanks to the contribution of others.

My first to the friends of - both within the community servers and beyond - who have undoubtedly contributed to making my life better, more stimulating, and richer. So, I extend this gratitude to all those who, here in the fediverse or elsewhere, are present and positive, giving me inspiration and motivation.

Truly, thank you!

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.50 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Incoming posts can now be filtered out by content using regular expressions on a server level (these regexes are written in the filter_reject.txt file at the server base directory; see snac(5) and snac(8)).

Improved page position after hitting the Hide or MUTE buttons (for most cases).

Use a shorter maximum conversation thread level (also, this maximum value is now configurable at compilation level with the MAX_CONVERSATION_LEVELS define).

Fixed a bug where editing a post made the attached media or video to be lost.

The way of refreshing remote actor data has been improved.

Posting from the command-line now allows attachments.

Added defines for time to enable MacOS builds (contributed by andypiper).

I'm curious. What kind of volume are other people seeing in their object storage?

I'm running a brand new instance with about 3 active users so far and a relatively low volume of stuff on the federated timeline. However my storage bucket is at nearly 6GB after 4 days of the instance being up. 🤯

I haven't set up the media cache retention setting yet, which might be a big chunk of it. But I'm curious what number people put in there and what their bucket size looks like.

@cablespaghetti @fedops @stesnac snac is probably the best way to go for a single user instance. It’s purely written in C, just needs curl and OpenSSL and has a very small footprint. See my other posts, where I had it running with 256mb RAM only (including FreeBSD OS consumption).

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.48 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

A new instance page, that shows all posts by users in the same instance (like the public instance timeline, but interactive). This will help building communities.

Follower-only replies to unknown users are not shown in timelines.

Added verification of metadata links: if the linked page contains a link back to the snac user with a rel="me" attribute, it's marked as verified.

Added a new server-level configuration parameter: min_account_age. If this value (in seconds) is set in server.json, any activity coming from accounts that were created newer than that will be discarded. This can be used to mitigate spam.

Added a profile-page relation to links in webfinger responses (contributed by khm).

Fixed some regressions and a crash.

Second phone call of the day: "Help, the server is no longer reachable, and the internet connection is down! We're completely stuck!"
Knowing the location and type of their server room, I asked, "Have you sent someone to check?" They replied, "Not yet, but we're sending a colleague right away." Five minutes later, their colleague called, embarrassed: "Sorry, the cleaning staff were in the room, and to clean better, they UNPLUGGED THE SERVERS FROM THE OUTLETS (the UPS units are in another room), to lift the cables and clean better."

Problem solved 😆

Evening is descending upon Mantova, Italy.
Like every day for the past 2000 years, the city is preparing to slumber.
The last rays of the sun are casting their final glow upon the tranquil waters, which flow with a soothing, melodic murmur.

And I ponder how many things, people, and events those waters have mirrored. A new morning will arrive, bathing those ancient bricks in fresh light, just as it has for the last 2000 years.

Apple will allow the use of full versions of different browsers on iOS, not just as a 'frontend' for Safari.

This is great news because I like Safari (thanks, @lisamelton and @jensimmons !) but I believe having the option of choice is always an advantage for everyone. In the past, I've had rendering issues on some websites with Safari (Mobile), making it impossible to use those sites.

Client call in panic mode. CRM software techs logged in and filled up the disk.
With 50GB free out of 100GB, I wondered how that's possible. They wanted to copy the entire directory to another for "safety".
Explained I could backup and restore if needed in seconds. But no, they had done as they said. Result? Disk filled, everything halted.
I'm out and about.
Proxmox doesn't let me modify virtual hardware through its Android app or limited mobile web page. Desktop site request doesn't help, layout's all messed up. In emergency mode, I set up an xrdp FreeBSD jail with Mate and Firefox, connected via VPN on my smartphone, accessed the client's Proxmox.
Added a virtual disk, extended the LVM, and the underlying XFS filesystem.
Total time? A blind 10 minutes.
Triumphantly, I call the client (who knew I was away from a computer) to report success.
The naive response: "Okay, but all this time just to expand a virtual disk?"

I decide it's better not to comment 😊

We added pronouns support in .
It will be displayed for three different purposes.

1 - In timelines next to the display name
2 - When replying to an account (above the first reply)
3 - When mentioning accounts with the auto-complete feature.

It works for accounts that use a field named "pronouns".
We might expand to other words or translations.

Screenshot showing the compose feature where an indication about pronouns is displayed (He/Him)
Screenshot showing the auto-complete results after writing "@" char with some letters. Some accounts are displayed and some of them have pronouns next to their user name.

Acqua. Terra. Aria.

In the gentle embrace of twilight, nature orchestrates a symphony of elements.
Water, still as glass, mirrors the fiery kiss of the setting sun, cradling the reflection of
Earth's slumbering giants, the trees stripped of their verdant glory.
Air, the unseen maestro, whispers through the branches, composing a silent lullaby that speaks of the day's end. Like a moment suspended in time, a tender pause between the rush of days, reminding us of the quiet majesty that cradles our bustling lives.

On a cold winter day, it aims for the sun and warms himself with its gentle warmth.

The sun isn't always strong enough to warm our lives, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to catch every single ray that life offers.

Tech detail: Photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. I've taken similar ones with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The significant difference is that with the other two devices, the bokeh around the flower was noticeably off, blurring even the petals. The S24 seems to do a significantly better job.
