Some important context as this news breaks:

is an open-source project, available at WordPress.org.

One of its co-founders, Matt Mullenweg, is CEO of , which runs WordPress.com and owns .

They can’t sell what they don’t have, so “WordPress” here refers to WordPress.com, not self-hosted WordPress instances.

BUT many self-hosted instances use the Jetpack plugin, which does send data to WordPress.com, so that might be sold 🤬

@cmdr_nova I mean, if you’re able to, probably not a bad idea. It depends on how easily you can replace (or live without) the modules you use.

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@airwhale

  1. I haven’t run anything over there in a long time, so I’d refer to the Terms of Service.

  2. Have you seen what AI tech bros will pay for? A fool and his money…

I’d imagine ease of parsing would factor in; instead of crawling, get a nice, packaged export full of supporting metadata.

WP databases (and WXR exports) can contain way more data than you might see on the front-end (but I’m speculating)

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@cmdr_nova in that case, migrating away from Jetpack should be fairly straightforward. Good luck!

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@_L1vY_ as @johnlehet said, it would depend on if your “basic” WordPress instance is hosted on WordPress.com or not.

If you self-host (e.g. Liquid Web, WPEngine, GoDaddy, on a VPS you control, etc.) then you should be in the clear. This news is specific to instances running on WordPress.com (presumably of any service level).

Hey, you: please stop pluralizing words with apostrophes.

Is this the house where the Smith family lives? It’s “The Smiths” or “The Smiths’ [residence]”, not “The Smith’s”.

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas basically, the apostrophe is used for possession (and contractions):

Bens: multiple people named Ben
Ben’s: something belonging to Ben
Bens’: something belonging to multiple Bens

As @ramsey pointed out, it gets weird with names that end in an “s” sound:

Haynes: last name of a friend
Haynes’: something belonging to that friend (or his family?)
Hayneses: awkward pluralization, often written around (e.g. “Haynes family”)
Hanes: underwear

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd I could go for a gastropub right about now: a solid burger, craft beer, and truffle fries? 😋

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @heiglandreas good point:

Haynes’: belonging to Mr. Haynes
Haynes’s: belonging to the Haynes family
Hayneseses’: how my wife and I say it to make it clear that language is silly sometimes

Don’t get me started on “its” v. “it’s” 😳

how did it take me this long to realize automattic is a pun

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@exchgr there was a video that came out in like 2015 where the cast of Silicon Valley were asked to guess what real start-ups did based solely on their names.

Kumail was given Automattic 😁

Only downside to the signal username things ... the discriminator number (two digit suffix for all usernames) eliminates the real landrush stuff that people normally encounter.

Why is that a downside?

Because I wanted to be cool! 😎

Oh, also, the fact it still requires a phone number means it still doesn't work for one of my use cases. (Chatting to iPads that don't have SIMs, and belong to people who don't have phones)

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd the number of usernames that end in “69” or “420”…probably good they’re not making a search/directory feature 😅

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@ian @kboyd oh, from their announcement post it sounded like at least two:

> A username on Signal (unlike a profile name) must be unique and must have two or more numbers at the end of it; a choice intended to help keep usernames egalitarian and minimize spoofing.

Maybe that would mean something like “kboyd4.20”?

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd @ian I can't immediately find a gif of Wayne from Letterkenny saying "Jinx, you owe me a Coke", but pretend I had posted that here 😉

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@ian @kboyd Someday, I'll recount this moment to my grandchildren: the one time that Ian was (ever-so slightly) wrong about something related to telecommunications.

Tough break man, but we all slip up eventually. 😜

This thread pretty much sums up my thoughts on :

While it can be useful for rapid prototyping, too often our prototypes get shipped as “MVPs”, which are then never given the space to really be cleaned up.

As a result, shit like this lives on and we continue the cycle of “front-end needs to be over-engineered so people will respect us!”

The end of Marriage Equality is here

Tennessee Republicans just passed Senate Bill 596 allowing people to discriminate against same-sex couples and thus setting up another Supreme Court battle to strip away more rights

Your reminder:

As Roe fell, Justice Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion

“[SCOTUS] should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell”

It won't end with just same-sex marriage

i’m thinking about reviving NYPHP. Live in NYC (or nearby), and Interested in attending?

What PHP companiess have NYC offices? Do you know of some? Do you work at one? It would be great to have companies to sponsor, and be part of the community

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@awoodsnet @ramsey the Brooklyn office recently closed and merged with the Intuit office in Manhattan (51 Astor Pl).

Unfortunately, I know nothing about sponsorship and/or space programs 😕

Full disclosure: two friends are running this. They’re swell, and I want to see them succeed, so I’ve pre-ordered a couple puzzles.

If you like puzzles and/or have ties to Michigan, I encourage you to do the same!

wish i could tell iCloud private relay to only enable for public wifi networks, which is the only place i really feel the need for it

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@exchgr you can disable it on a per-network basis: Settings > Wi-Fi > Netowk, then scroll to “Limit IP Address Tracking”

It doesn’t cover public v private networks, but at least your home network(s) can be excluded.

Hello friends — mini-me was forgetful and took her anti-seizure medication too late and she just had a very long and powerful epileptic seizure. She is awake and confused and on the way to the hospital.

Please make sure your loved ones take their medication on time as directed by their doctors even if they yell at you to leave them alone.

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer that must have been terrifying! Good vibes your way that this all gets under control!

project idea: Create an RSS feed just for you. Identify multiple data sources, Filter them by some criteria, then merge them into an RSS feed that only you read.

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@awoodsnet I mean, isn’t that essentially an RSS reader with some extra filtering?

I collect all my feeds in @NetNewsWire, and have them categorized (News, Entertainment, etc.). If I want to, I can go to “All Unread” and see everything.

Honestly, if I could filter out keywords on a per-feed level (example: I don’t care about sports, but still want the local campus news), it’d be damn-near perfect.

What would you do with this aggregated feed? Load it into a reader?

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@awoodsnet @NetNewsWire ah, got it. So more of an API => RSS adapter with aggregation capabilities?
