No mention of fusion energy at least at the top level of in BNEF's New Energy Outlook 2024 report, which is no surprise given its unproven abilities. But at Commonwealth Fusion Systems, we're working hard to carve out a big wedge alongside solar and wind for zero-carbon electricity. Our first machine is under construction, and we want to put power on the grid in the early 2030s. https://about.bnef.com/new-energy-outlook/
In MacOS, I often take a screenshot, right-click on the thumbnail that pops up, then select "Save to Clipboard." I've been doing this for years but still have to parse the words carefully. Why oh why doesn't it just say "Copy"? So much easier at least for my brain to grok. #UI
If you're good with social media and are psyched by the prospect of using zero-carbon fusion energy to fight climate change, good news — we're hiring someone to work with me and others at Commonwealth Fusion Systems. We're a startup, but we're not vaporware: our factory is cranking out superconducting magnets and our first tokamak is under construction. HMU if you're curious, but here's the job post.
@stshank As a bird photographer for years, I've seen male ospreys go fishing, then stopping somewhere to get the best parts (like in the photo), then taking the rest to the wife and kids.
I used to joke about my parents having a solar and wind powered dryer, because they used a clothesline. But now when I try that joke, people look at me blankly, thinking they have some renewables option checked on the utility bill. Bummer for my joke, but it died for a worthy cause.
Using AI to oversee dynamic fusion machines is a hot area of research. It doesn't mean generative AI like ChatGPT. It's old-school AI, where you train a machine to recognize patterns in complex real-world data then let it make decisions.
@karlauerbach Neat! Also check out radioactive decay used for measuring the age of the Earth (lead and uranium) and of lava flows (argon and potassium).
Unexpected benefit of working at a fusion energy startup: plasma emoji already preloaded into Slack for appreciating people's aurora photos. #AuroraBorealis#Aurora#Space
@stshank No E2EE in 1.0 because they want to get it out quickly, because some significant subset of users realllly want it… and then they're gonna think about doing this properly in the protocol later
