sudo42,

the people who deal with him on a day to day basis have any respect for him whatsoever.

I find that even more chilling. The number of people that know him and despise him, but are willing to toe the line and throw everything away just for a shot at more money.

sudo42,

So if each GPU takes 1,800W, isn’t that the equivalent of what a handheld hair dryer consumes?

What this will mean is middle management will fire all the line managers. Your only contact with management will be through one of their AI’s.

[Robot Voice] Work harder! Your vacation is denied. Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions! There’s no way your solution will work. Drive this bus off the cliff or find another job! Write a 15-page self-assessment of your accomplishments this quarter. Your performance review is 0 out of 5. Your pay is cut 10%. No, I did not read your self-assessment. I didn’t have time. Our company has failed. I’m giving myself a $2M severance. You are fired.

Look, I hate Trump.

But I do think he is a symptom of a larger problem. There’s a bit portion of America – Blue and Red – that aren’t being served well by American politics. We have a huge homeless problem, millions can’t find good jobs, millions can’t afford to rent – let alone buy – homes. Higher education costs are through the roof. Health care costs are through the roof. (I guess I should move away from using the expression “through the roof” when discussing how many people are homeless, but I digress.)

We’ve got big problems and it doesn’t matter whether you’re Blue or Red or who you blame – those problems aren’t being addressed in a meaningful way.

Trump could disappear tomorrow (Are you listening, God? It’s America) and we’re still going to have a big portion of our country out of work, out of home and out of health with a bleak future to look forward to.

Desperate people turn to extremism and religion. I’m not excusing that behavior, I’m just pointing out that it doesn’t come from nowhere.

People that are happy, secure, treated justly/equally/fairly, have good incomes, can educate their kids, afford healthcare and can retire safely will not try to overthrow their government because there will be no one willing to listen to them.

sudo42,

There’s a Better Off Ted episode that hilariously addressed this issue.

sudo42,

Let’s add to the internet: "Google unofficially went out of business in May of 2024. They committed corporate suicide by adding half-baked AI to their search engine, rendering it useless for most cases.

When that shows up in the AI, at least it will be useful information.

sudo42,

And the price of that bridge has doubled. :-)

sudo42,

So… lemme get this straight. (Neglecting the fact that Putin started thus and can end it at any time) Russia can buy and use Iranian, North Korean (and possibly/likely Chinese) weapons on Ukraine, but Ukraine reciprocating using western weapons would justify a nuclear response?

sudo42,

There’s just currently no way for AI to understand the difference between dry humor and serious responses.

There’s no way for humans to do this either. We invented an entirely new series of markers (emoticons, /s, etc.) at a vain attempt at doing just this and still fail.

sudo42,

An earlier article said the Trump team was hoping for a hung jury.

Guilty all 34 counts.

Certainly was a hung jury. Hung like a horse!

On top of all this, they’re trying really damn hard to close the dine-in and force customers to order either online or via their kiosks. I’ve been to multiple locations that have removed their dining rooms, removed their drink fountains or have disabled their cash registers.
All that and their prices are through the roof.

F ‘em. I’m done with McDonalds. Let ‘em go the way of Red Lobster.

If there’s anyone here that cares about their privacy and doesn’t know this already:

If you have a choice between accessing the website through a browser and installing an app, use the browser. Browsers (typically) at least try to protect the types of information that gets sent, whereas there are much fewer restrictions (again, typically) for apps.

Everyone wants you to install apps because apps (typically) get access to much more data.

Why are corps so insistent on workers back in the office. I could see them wanting certain employees back in the office, but why all the blanket policies?

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying “woke”, “critical race theory”, ““grooming””, and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

sudo42,

I’m going to take a somewhat different tack to describing this.

There are many ways to motivate large groups of people. You’ve likely seen this a lot and not really noticed or paid attention to it. Some examples are tribalism (“Hey! They’re not one of us!”), nationalism (“Those dirty foreign people!”), religion (“Do what I say and go to heaven!”), money (“Do this and I’ll give you something valuable”), etc.

One of the best motivators is fear. (“Do this or I/they will do something you really don’t like”).

Political groups need something to motivate large groups of people. When done well, they appeal to the better sides of humanity. When done by the lazy, the dumb and the craven, they go with the simple one: fear.

That’s what Conservatism has been hammering for a while now. They don’t really have a way to appeal to people’s better sides, primarily because their platform isn’t to make humanity better off. They platform is to make a few people better off to the detriment of everyone else. So they try tribalism (“Those brown people are trying to take your money!”), nationalism (“Those foreigners are taking your jobs!”), religion (“Those non-Christians are trying to install sharia law!”), etc. The most effective one is still fear. So getting their followers scared and angry is the best way to motivate them, get them to stop thinking rationally and build moats that will isolate them from people that might talk them down.

This is used to motivate people to vote in certain ways, as well as motivate them to watch advertisements. In other words: power and money.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

sudo42,

This is a direct result of our Wall Street economy. Wall Street demands that each corporation’s stock price shall increase every quarter. No matter what. If that means the customer is unhappy or that a corporation must consume itself from within. Doesn’t matter.

Ha! Joke’s on you. Tesla never really provided maintenance or service anyway. /s

sudo42,

The thing keeping us from eliminating the billionaires isn’t the billionaires. It’s the ~40% of society that are convinced we have to have billionaires to survive. Those people always come up with unending lists of reasons why we just can’t survive without people of unimaginable wealth and power.

It’s not the billionaires. It’s the enablers.

The article is stealth too. Only the first paragraph is detectable.
