Some code stopped working after mayday and started working today again. Turns out there exists strptime() implemention that ignores the "leading zeroes are permitted but not required" in %d identifier for day of month...

Maybe tonight, a real Carrington event will come and fry all these bugs off the computers.

So there was a G5 class geomagnetic storm. The Auroras were beautiful in southern Finland. Strong enough to be visible despite the twilight! It doesn't get proper dark this close to summer this north.

But unfortunately computers are still with us, and Monday will uncover more bugs....

After a very windy afternoon Puget Sound Energy is now tracking 140 separate outages across the region affecting roughly 22.1K buildings.

Lab is operating on generator power and some equipment shut down when a loose UPS EBM cable resulted in running out of battery before the generator started.

So much for a nice relaxing weekend. Guess it's an excuse to do some hardware maintenance I had been putting off trying to avoid downtime.

suihkulokki,
@suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@attilakinali @azonenberg Solar does NOT solve grid failures. In fact, to be allowed to connect panels grid, they must be equipped with anti-islanding (panels must switch off when grid goes out).

You need a more complex setup if you want to do safe islanding.

suihkulokki,
@suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@azonenberg @attilakinali aye, a solar + battery setup with a transfer switch that can disconnect grid physically before starting to feed the home during outage would do it.

The EU vs grain debate hosts one category of participants who are just as destructive as they are tragicomically detached from reality - I call them “big farm libertarians”. Here’s one example, Alex Lissitsa, head of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club:

Protectionism won’t save the EU’s agricultural sector, Lissitsa said. “Polish farmers are too small to be real players in the global grain market, where they have to compete with countries like Ukraine, Brazil or Russia,” he said. They’d be better off specializing in the production of flowers, fruits or vegetables, he added. “Or even marijuana.”

Every his single statement quoted here displays not only an utter arrogance but also complete misunderstanding of EU Common Agricultural Policy goals and operation. Protectionism on the EU farming market is not an obstacle, it’s an entirely intentional mechanism that prevents dog-eat-dog competition between EU member states and, most importantly, keeps the farming industry in house, thus securing a critical supply chain - food - inside EU. And it’s not only EU who’s doing it - Switzerland has one of them most protectionist farming industries in the world and Russia has just laboriously rebuilt it farming industry over the last decade to remove the strategic dependence on imports… from EU.

suihkulokki,
@suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@nafnlaus @kravietz EU already had this debate when eastern Europe joined EU. We decided the farming shall remain all over EU even if it is rather inefficient in many corners (such as in Finland). The end result is lots of EU budget is now subsiding inefficient farming in northern and western Europe. It going to be big challenge for integrating Ukraine into EU.

suihkulokki,
@suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@nafnlaus @kravietz You are not wrong, but you are missing how wildly unpopular it is that "local farmers" would be replaced by "foreign agribusinesses". It's not just in Democraric places, but globally. Almost every country has protectionist agricultural policy.

PSA: In context of the xzpocalypse we now added an example reimplementation of sd_notify() to our man page:

https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/devel/sd_notify.html#Notes

It's pretty comprehensive (i.e. uses it for reload notification too), but still relatively short.

In the past, I have been telling anyone who wanted to listen that if all you want is sd_notify() then don't bother linking to libsystemd, since the protocol is stable and should be considered the API, not our C wrapper around it. After all, the protocol is so trivial

suihkulokki,
@suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@pid_eins even easier, I think you could just recommend system("systemd-notify --ready") for users who don't need performance?

Tornio 🇫🇮 - Haparanda 🇸🇪

Is the infra ready?
we don't know exactly when it will be ready

Where is the infra missing?
electrification is missing, Finnish side, oh and the bridge between Tornio and Haparanda might need work

Only then should we talk about what services, if any, could run

I'm not really into supporting either side in the "copyright maximalists" vs "machine learning techbros" lawsuits.

If techbros win, copyright becomes largely irrelevant. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. But that means trade secrets become incredibly valuable. If you keep you ML model secret, you can milk the the rest of the world with API fees.

Something I think few of my compatriots appreciate is how Russian FP analysts view the USA through a prism that Americans assume works only for Moscow. In this article, Alexander Yakovenko calls the USA an ideological revisionist driven by legal nihilism & criminal-world rules

https://rg.ru/2023/12/25/aleksandr-iakovenko-svo-priblizhaet-diplomatiiu.html

It is, admittedly, a bananas text. At one point, he says the West unleashed a proxy Ukrainian “blitzkrieg” to impose something like the 1919 Treaty of Versailles on Moscow (chronology??), before calling fascism/Nazism the West’s “collective project” to take out the USSR.

@osma Nyt ajaudutaan puhumaan vähän eri asioista.
