I finally figured out a uvular trill!!!

“You can’t learn new phonemes as an adult” is a lie.

I mean, I was already sure of that, because my Spanish pronunciation wasn’t always this good, but I couldn’t say for absolute certain which sounds in Spanish and Japanese I didn’t have as a child. (Some sounds that are in Spanish but not English are in Rusyn, which was occasionally spoken in my house.)

But I DEFINITELY could not make a uvular trill a week ago.

@maco in that case I should have never been able to learn the English th sound, or the English l in kill, or the Japanese l/r sound. Yes, there are sounds that are difficult to master and some are probably impossible, also depending on genetics (my sister can’t do the Spanish rrrr with her tongue at all), but to say it’s impossible to learn new phonemes as an adult doesn’t seem right to me at all. Where does this come from?

Nochmal zur Laktoseintoleranz, kann ich jetzt eigentlich keine Tabletten mehr schlucken?

Ist man laktoseintolerant, kann der Darm nicht genügend Laktase bilden, weshalb man Laktose nicht verträgt.

Das Enzym Laktase wird benötigt, um den Zweifachzucker Laktose in die beiden Einfachzucker Galaktose und Glukose aufzuspalten.

Laktoseintolerant bedeutet aber nicht unbedingt, dass man überhaupt keine Laktase mehr bilden kann, sondern dass man nur weniger davon bildet.

@DerApotheker mein Hausarzt (Internist) ist der Meinung, dass Laktasetabletten herausgeworfenes Geld sind, weil sie zu lange brauchen, um in den Darm zu gelangen, und bis dahin zerstört sind. Als ich aufgehört habe sie zu nehmen, habe ich tatsächlich bemerkt, dass ich nicht total laktoseintolerant bin, nur hatte ich den Effekt den Tabletten zugeschrieben. Mein Leben ist wieder einfacher geworden, ein kleines Töpfchen Kaffeesahne, oder ein paar Löffel Eis sind vollkommen in Ordnung, auch Süßes mit Milchpulver geht. Nur eine ganze Tasse Milch werde ich nie wieder in meinem Leben trinken… Es kommt (bei mir) einfach auf die Menge an.

    @linguistgoneforeign my Japanese teacher explained that 会う (meet) can be used with both に and と (not て). With 友達 it should not make much of a difference, in both cases it translates as “to meet with”. The subtle difference is that に indicates your movement towards your friend, whereas with と both of you might be moving towards a meeting place from different directions. However, when you are going to see a doctor 医者に会う, it should always be に as you are the person going to the doctor.
    The verb forms in the sentence with て (あって\会って、して) just indicate a list of activities which then ends on a normal verb form (いきました).
    The や mentioned by @jasonmolenda is 屋 as in shop, so they went to a ramen place.

    The word 'bone' has the same origin as German 'Bein', Dutch 'been', and Swedish 'ben', which mean both "bone" and "leg".

    These nouns are thought to stem from an adjective meaning "straight". It lives on in Icelandic 'beinn' and Norwegian 'be(i)n' (straight; right).

    @yvanspijk in German we still also have Gebeine which refers to bones in the sense of skeleton but also more general to mortal remains. That one has nothing to do with legs.

    Aufgrund von Öffistreik heute mit dem Rad unterwegs. Fast überall ist es schwierig einen Abstellplatz fürs Rad zu finden. Unsere Innenstädte sind nicht Mal auf zwei Tage Öffistreik vorbereitet, wenn es um Fahrradinfrastruktur geht.
    Wird wohl eher schwierig mit Verkehrswende.

    @rmmonster ich finde es auch ohne Streik schon oft genug schwierig, in der Innenstadt einen vernünftigen Platz für mein Rad zu finden. 😞

    Grrr, Fahrraddiebe unterwegs in der Tiefgarage. Zwei von unseren acht Rädern sind weg. Zum Glück die, die wir am wenigsten brauchten. Sie waren zusammen nur mit einem Kabelschloss festgemacht. Alle anderen Räder haben einzelne dickere U-Schlösser und die meisten davon waren an einer kräftigeren Metallkette angeschlossen.
    Um das eine tut es mir ein bisschen leid, das alte, schon längst zu klein gewordene Rad von meinem Sohn, aber das andere war ein unfähiges Dreigangklapprad, mit dem man einfach nicht voran kam. Trotzdem ärgerlich.
    Es wird Zeit, dass ich mir etwas besseres einfallen lasse.

    @mina ich glaube mittlerweile, dass es sich hier um eine Mutprobe der lokalen jugendlichen Bevölkerung handelt, in die Tiefgarage einzudringen und etwas mitgehen zu lassen. Ein E-Bike würde ich da unten nur in einer verschlossenen Garage aufbewahren. Die beiden abhanden gekommenen Räder sind für uns tatsächlich nicht weiter wichtig. Glück im Unglück gehabt. Aber ärgerlich ist es doch, vor allem, weil man sich kaum traut, wieder etwas hinzustellen.

    Warum macht man sich die Mühe? Damit man behaupten kann, der neue (noch nicht mal benutzungspflichtige) Radweg entspricht irgendwelchen Vorgaben? 🤔

    🗼 Dem „Telemoritz“ in der Innenstadt von Hannover droht der Abriss. Dem Eigentümer VWN ist der Unterhalt des alten Fernsehturms offenbar zu teuer. Die Stadt möchte das Wahrzeichen dagegen erhalten und es vielleicht anders nutzen.

    🗼 Der „Telemoritz“ wurde 1959 errichtet. 2000 kaufte VWN den Turm. Vor fast vier Jahren fiel ein Betonstück hinab und verfehlte zwei Passanten nur knapp.

    @Horschtel ah, OK, deswegen kann man da nicht rauf. Fand ich immer schade. Ich bin da aber eher rational eingestellt, wenn er weg muss, dann ist es eben so, aber leid würde es mir schon ein wenig tun. Dann geht nur wieder das ewige Jammern und Wehklagen derer, die nicht loslassen können, los, wie man sowas nur machen kann… 😆

    Words such as 'formula' and 'ratio' instantly give away their Latin origin, but did you know 'wall' and 'kitchen' come from Latin too?

    They were borrowed during the Roman occupation of a part of Europe that spoke the ancestor of English.

    @yvanspijk my dad used to talk about how he worked “im Pütt” as a young man. What he meant were the coal mines. I’m pretty sure that’s the same origin as Pfütze and pit.
