    But, the other day I was standing waiting for the bus in Wick and a chap came up to me and asked “is this the town hall?”. I said ”no, not really, it's up that street on the right, by the corner”.

    I was standing outside the old town hall whose facade has been preserved but whose insides have been ripped out and replaced with a bigger and non-condemned building accessed from the other side.

    Watching him and his mates a few minutes later it was apparent that they were trying to determine if the bus stop opposite was the one referred to as “opp Town Hall”. But they didn't ask that question and disappeared off before the traffic allowed me to cross the road and set them right.

    So, yeah, people often ask the wrong questions on Internet technical forums, or don't give enough context to give a useful, rather than just literal, answer.

    @edavies @Extelec This reminded me of something my wife did a few years ago. We lived in Kraków, a city in Southern Poland, a former capital of the country, where many former kings lie in their tombs in the Wawel castle. In 2010 the Polish presidential plane crashed on approach to Smoleńsk, a city in Russia. The president was buried in the Wawel castle – a controversial decision that led many to quipping "What's the shortest way to Wawel? Through Smoleńsk" (the cities are over a thousand kilometres apart). My wife is a geographer. She waited patiently. And then one day, in the best possible spot, near Kyiv Cinema in Kraków, a couple of tourists asked her "what's the shortest way to Wawel?". "Through Smoleńsk", she answered. They looked at her with disgust. Smoleńsk is the name of a street that leads from Kyiv Cinema to the center of of the city, and then it's just a short walk to Wawel. It was the shortest way.

    That old linden tree in the forest is slowly falling apart. A huge branch fell recently and we now have an idea of what's killing it – the smaller branches grown into the main branch are not linden – they're mistletoe.

    Asbestos-reinforced cement roof tiles are still widespread in poor areas of Poland. It is possible to get full refund for dismantling those roofs, but then you need a new roof and you have to pay for it out of your pocket. They'll stay with us for a while.
