It's not just about accessibility. The Fediverse is a large collection of servers run by a diverse group of people.

Sometimes, images can't be loaded. Whether that's a server to server issue, or a user with a poor connection. Alt text is just as useful then!

To the people complaining that there aren't enough artists here: are you following any art hashtags? Actually, same question to people who say mastodon doesn't have enough of whatever! Just follow some hashtags! Trust me if you do soon enough your feed will be absolutely drowning in your interest unless it's super niche

And then you can follow people who pop up on there, and maybe even eventually unfollow the hashtag

Look, if you want me to think of the billionaires as people, then they have to live among us and that means giving up the billions, which means not being billionaires anymore.

I can't solve this dilemma for you, it's a real Catch-22.

I mean, if you want to live above the concerns of normal people and ascend beyond human concerns we can't exactly treat you as if our lives have any commonality anymore, as if you're actually human.

I worry about whether or not my insurance will cover me if I suddenly develop cancer or impoverish my loved ones--you're worried about whether or not the tax rate is going to go up on your private jet and if you should move the headquarters to Reno instead.

We are not the same.

We're barely sharing the same planet.

I don't even know the last time I opened Hulu, but my phone says it's used 1.45 MB of mobile data and wifi since February 24th.

Yesterday alone, it had nearly 4k teaching attempts blocked. Today, it's already surpassed that.

I am blown away by the amount of tracking attempts not just from Hulu, but from across my phone's apps. Especially ones I don't use often, or haven't used in months.

And TikTok is the problem? (Not saying TikTok is good, but in comparison for this singular data point)

I think nearly 5k (for yesterday, now) is worse when I'm not using the app at all, versus 181 when I'm actually using the app and seeing the ads.

I understand that apps and websites have trackers for ads, analytics, marketing, etc. I don't understand why an app I'm not using needs to, though :ablobshrug:

Some accounts use a "BOT" label. This doesn't mean anything bad, it just means the account is posting in an automated way.

Lots of bots are useful or entertaining. For example the bot @VoteChess runs chess games where people vote on the next move. You can find more useful bots listed by @FediFollows at https://fedi.directory/tag/bots/

If you run a bot account, here's how to label it:

  1. Log in through your server's website
  2. Click "Edit profile"
  3. Tick "This is a bot account"
  4. Click "Save changes"

Was busy all day and just logged in to check Fedi. Immediately noticed posts about spam bots showing up again :ablobsigh:

Luckily, thanks to a simple cronjob, a limit was automatically applied against the affected servers due to consensus of, checks @oliphant's blog...

At least 50% across multiple servers that have a larger and more active moderation team than just I :ablobwobwork:

People underestimate just how important it is to add alt text to attachments in the Fediverse.

These are thousands of servers spread across the globe run by so many different people.
If there's an issue with a media server, the attachment might fail to load, and it could be hours before it gets fixed.

Without alt text, your attachment isn't just useless to the audio/visually impaired. It can easily be useless to anyone because of network/server issues!

These instances are mostly run by volunteers who have other day jobs.
There isn't a single person, let alone a team, to make sure it all keeps running smoothly all of the time!

I've deactivated all of my accounts on twitter, they no longer exist publicly and should be removed in 30 days... If birdsite is to be believed...

I have the data archives, but idk yet if I'll ever publish them to my own domain with something like tweetback or not.
