Today is a weird anniversary for me. 29 years ago today, as a ten year old, I had a brain surgery that saved my life. I had been sick with a mysterious illness for months when doctors finally took x-rays and then an MRI that showed I had developed a massive cyst in the fluid membrane that cushions the brain inside the skull. When diagnosed, this cyst had become so large it was crushing my brain.
On May 11th, 1995 a team at the St Louis Children's Hospital cut open my skull and operated on me for 14 hours, with the lead neurosurgeon working (and standing!) continuously to fully remove the cyst and repair the membrane, then putting my head back together, totally successful. My now unburdened brain resumed it's normal shape, and this had a similar effect as a stroke, which was anticipated.
This experience completely changed my childhood. The night before the surgery I believed I would die the next day. All these years later, I've no complications and none the worse for wear, except for this nifty zig-zag scar.

This morning I was honored to have Kurt Schwartzmann as a passenger on my 44 O’Shaughnessy. Kurt painted my portrait as part of his series called “Portraits of Muni Service” which is dedicated to Muni personnel who keep the system working for San Francisco.

I met Kurt years ago at a Muni diaries live event, where he told his incredibly human and touching story of how a Muni Operator lifted him up at a low time in his life. It’s an amazing story worth listening to: https://www.munidiaries.com/2019/06/24/artist-tips-his-cap-to-muni-a-refuge-for-tougher-times/

For 10 years, as San Francisco leaders touted an ambitious Vision Zero goal to end traffic fatalities, police eased back on ticketing drivers.

Citations plummeted, from 12,444 in March 2014 to 336 in December 2023, according to city records.

The numbers are so stark that some frustrated observers wondered if officers had retreated from a fundamental part of their job, giving people the impression that road rage or speeding would go unpunished.

@jef bit of math here suggests that, generously, each member of the SFPD traffic division (46 officers) wrote a ticket at most once every other day they worked.

This morning my daughter is at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, auditioning for a placement in the fine art department. Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, known colloquially as SOTA, is San Francisco’s art focused public high school. With her permission, I am sharing some of her art.

that_mc,
@that_mc@sfba.social avatar

My daughter is an amazing artist, and when it was time to make a list of high schools to apply to, SOTA was far and away her top choice. I am not sure if she has ever wanted anything as much as she wants to study there.

that_mc,
@that_mc@sfba.social avatar

Students applying to SOTAs fine art department have to submit a portfolio of work, which was due in December. My daughter worked determinedly, and had the support of an excellent teacher from the SF Rec and Parks portfolio development class. She turned in beautiful work in December.

Since then, she’s been preparing for today’s audition by doing studies of her hand in one of her many sketchbooks. These drawings show her dedication and talent, and to me, show how she is handling the stress of this process with grace, maturity, and humor.

The fact is, there are fewer spots available at SOTA than there are qualified and deserving applicants, and many kids who have the abilities SOTA selects for won’t get in. Our fingers are crossed for her success.

My daughter knows that there will be talented an deserving kids that won’t be admitted, and she is putting her best effort in with clear eyes and a great attitude. I know how much it means to her, and I know wherever she goes to high school, she’s going to thrive and flourish.

Her stretch books are filled with treasures, and I’m very proud to share her work here. She does hilarious comic art, and this was inserted between serious life drawing studies (reference to The Glass Town Game
by Catherynne M. Valente)

Even over the course of a month, the progress she has achieved in her renders is incredible and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

Please join me in wishing good luck and great success to my daughter in her audition today. Our future is in her hands, and in the hands of all the children in the world. Our hope is with them.

I received my first Operator Mail ✉️ of the New Year today. It’s the last commendation I earned last year. I’m so grateful to this passenger (Jessica or Jennifer, I forget) who I recall dropping off at Stonestown New Years Eve. This is the 22nd commendation I have earned as a Muni Operator, and I feel proud and honored to be appreciated. Thank you Jessinferca!

@jsatk the most expedient way is to call 311, you’ll be given a chance to say it’s muni related, then ask to compliment an employee. You will want to be ready to give a couple pieces of information: the route and direction, Coach number, time, location, and the operators cap number. The cap number is embroidered in our right sleeve, but you can also ask the operator. Then tell them why you love your muni operator! That’s all there is to it, only takes a couple minutes. And presto, a week or two later, your operator will get an envelope from the dispatcher, and good feelings for a week at least!
