How waterproof are iPhones? I used my iPhone 14pro as a snorkeling camera back in February (it was already over a year old, so I decided to risk it), washed it out and it seemed fine. Did it again a few times. No problem. However the battery is getting weak so I took it in to Apple for a battery replacement. They opened it up and found corrosion due to water damage so didn’t replace the battery… I only buy even numbered iPhones so hopefully it keeps working until the 16 comes out.

@adrianco Strongly recommend the Olympus/OM “Tough” models. I have the TG-6 and it's been great.

@adrianco Our family is in Android-land and when we break a phone or its battery runs down, we go to a phone-repair storefront, and if we're willing to pay for a new battery they replace the damn battery without any questions about why. There are some problems where the repair is too expensive to be worth it, but usually not. These places tend to also say they repair iPhones…

@Craftycat @megahertz @zdl In fact, there is plenty of high-quality evidence showing that masking offers some (obviously not complete) protection to the person wearing it. But you are correct that for many people, the most important reason is to protect others.

@ZachWeinersmith And yet, the streaming experience is regressing to be more like the cable experience of yore. It’s not clear whether the current direction, of having to subscribe to a service to watch a show, is viable long-term. Don't think any one knows which way this is heading…

On the ICC warrants for Hamas & Israeli leaders, one line of protest is that “Hamas are autocrats but Bibi is democratically elected.” Um, so what? Whatever you think of Israeli voting choices, only leaders can be held responsible for giving the orders amounting to “Go ahead, slaughter the innocents.” I honestly don’t get it.

At the same time that bad-faith "pollers" are asking about masking, the attendee survey asks about it as well. But that survey only goes to attendees, meaning people put off by the requirement this year will not be asked. How do we get a complete view of the entire population of potential attendees?

@nedbat I suppose one might be abstractly interested in what proportion of PyPeople are anti-science and willing to endanger their fellow humans, but empirically the answer is “small enough to not get in the way”, which is cheering.
