An AI function I would use:
During video calls, generate video of my face that always looks at the camera – not slightly down at my laptop keyboard, or sideways at the cat – in the interest of better interpersonal communication through eye contact.

travisfw,

@FiveSketches 💯 I've been saying that for years.

In my version you get a generated 3D avatar that looks like you (no choice) and rather than streaming video you stream facial expression. You don't have to worry about lighting, your hair, or anything so you can just take the call. No more black screens in meetings.

I might have to rethink my stance on " all the way".

Due to the highly scriptable nature of the static site generator that I'm building, site code (or even entire sites) may fall under copyleft, and that's not what I want. I've had a look at the , but for my use case, it still sounds too strict. I'm also not keen on writing my own license exception, and I doubt it'd keep enough protections to make GPLing worthwhile in the first place. So I'm afraid 2.0 is my best bet?

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@lhinderberger @Merula have you read
"Why you shouldn't use the Lesser GPL for your next library"
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/why-not-lgpl.html
It actually sounds like, despite the title, they are arguing for a static site generator like yours, competing against proprietary software, to use the LGPL.

In her book , Gloria Mark, PhD dedicates a chapter to the discussion of free will.

Though it seems to me a tangent, I appreciate the implication that "taking control of our attention" isn't entirely a matter of choice. Whatever TF choice is.

I mean, choice is supposedly the thing that controls attention, but… elaboration fades to infinity

The deskilling of web dev is harming the product but, more importantly, it's damaging our health – this is why burnout happens - Baldur Bjarnason:

I am feeling that urgency again to shift culture to value life over our usefulness. I do believe engaging in some kind of healthy work is a necessary part of being well. But what we do must be secondary to the identity we have in relationship to our community outside the workplace.

Somehow this needs to translate into social and material security. But it can't with dominant meritocratic values.

travisfw, to random
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

I just realized we're missing a really big opportunity here. We should have an LLM trained on all-GPL code. And obviously, EVERYTHING it produces is licensed !

Oh. My. Fucking. God.

I have just learned that " Bean" has two completely different and incompatible definitions.

One is a dumb, badly designed data object with getters and setters.

The other is... a service object managed by the Spring framework IoC container.

Holy hell. This is 10x worse than "facades."

Am I wrong here? This is what I'm finding from online tutorials. Is there more nuance that is not coming through, because for now I just hate even more.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@Crell yeah just don't do Spring
But also, you must be digging through some legacy there

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@Crell me too, both

I'm taking this as an opening to rag on Spring for inventing a new SQL dialect that is harder to use than SQL because SQL is supposedly hard.

shows off cool trick a computer can do that boggles peoples minds, calls it AI

"ah ha! look at that, the machine must be alive!"

some time passes, trick is still cool, but flaws are evident now

"don't worry! we're 80-90% of the way there, so it'll be a snap to fix this!"

turns out that last 10-20% is the part that requires the discernment of an actual intelligence

"still working on it though!"

real world uses of the trick are much fewer in number than anticipated, and AI is deemed a failure (yet again)

Federated, p2p, and social technology identifying as decentralized needs polycentric algorithmic moderation.

In polycentric algorithmic moderation, each human combines four things to their personal satisfaction:

① the proverbial firehose of everything, including how the system narrows it down (EG who you follow)
② default filters (EG nsfw or hateful)
③ the moderation preferences of the majority (EG fediblock), and
④ personal preference (EG more this, less that, and absolutly nothing from X)

Note, by X, I mean a variable filled in by the user.
