Hey everyone! I recently posted about my latest project, a universal fediverse sharing button: https://stefanbohacek.com/project/fediverse-sharing-button/

Is this something that you'd find useful for your website or blog?

EDIT: Thanks everyone for sharing and trying this out! I fixed an issue on iOS some of you might have run into, just FYI.

Why is The Wayback Machine so important for preserving our digital culture? According to new analysis from Pew Research Center:
โŒ 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 are no longer accessible
โŒ 23% of news webpages contain at least one broken link

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

As far as I can tell, nobody wants that anymore.

I used to be a parent who when out in public felt like I had to perform a middle ground between my kid and social norms.

Now I am a parent who when out in public role-models the accommodation, flexibility, low-demand, and calm that I would like other people to practice around my kid - or any kid. Instead of trying to appease society, I'm showing society how it can do better.

It may not seem a big deal in the world, but this personal change is nothing short of revolutionary.

We are looking to fully self host our instance so that we have full control over everything related to the instance. This means we need/want someone that has experience running a self hosted instance and has the time to help Kyle with things when he's not around to do various things. (cont...)

Communication through concepts is lossy.

When you talk/write, you compress a rich part of experience into abstract symbols.

Then, someone else decompresses them in their own mind based on their own conditioning, experience and available cues/context (e.g. tone of voice, body language or the listeners own frame of mind at the time).

It's so easy to get hung up on words, "truth", accuracy and semantics, but forget about the other persons decompression factors that are hard to change or see.

Almost all bday party invites for my 4 year old specify "No gifts please" or "No gifts necessary" - and I totally get why, I added it to hers as well. Are we moving towards a society that's not so into gifting? Or is this only a thing at certain income levels?

The New River is the second oldest river on the planet. Iโ€™ve only recently come to understand the real significance of the Appalachians. I was born and raised in and around these mountains, and they were always just โ€” you know โ€” mountains.

They reach back something like 350 million years. Predating dinosaurs? Really?

Mark your calendars!

The next FediForum, the unconference for the people who move the Fediverse forward, is coming up September 12-14, 2024.

The most recent Fediforum in March had the largest attendance ever of developers, users, moderators, and many other people interested in building a better social media environment. We will build on this in September, for the first time in a 3-day event. We'd love to see you join us and your peers.

The problem with federated alternatives to centralized services (and also one of the main problems with centralized services which lead people to look for an alternative) is Discovery.

Etsy and Twitch and YouTube provide an audience, supposedly. With the right pitch (and the right advertising dollars) you can get your own slice of that audience. (For as long as the algorithm graces you, and as long as you're willing to stomach the other things your viewers will be algorithmically suggested.)

Human curration is what makes bookstores and record stores work.

Staff picks move books, even at a big chain. Reviews move books on Amazon, and get people to theaters.

But what incentive is there for people to undertake the act of intentional curration?

Film reviewers get paid to publish in magazines, but most magazines aren't turning a profit anymore.

No one gets paid for Amazon reviews. Rarely does anyone make money on their zine or their blog.

How can we support the people who help us find things?

The flood of press freedom violations at campus protests is a national embarrassment.

Journalists should be able to freely report on protests without fear of being arrested or attacked.

Police and others who interfere with reporting on protests must be held accountable.

Politicians facing re-election prioritize voter-pleasing policies over tough long-term challenges.

How do we escape the trap?
