I used to be a parent who when out in public felt like I had to perform a middle ground between my kid and social norms.

Now I am a parent who when out in public role-models the accommodation, flexibility, low-demand, and calm that I would like other people to practice around my kid - or any kid. Instead of trying to appease society, I'm showing society how it can do better.

It may not seem a big deal in the world, but this personal change is nothing short of revolutionary.

The foxes are in charge of the henhouse.

Oh, and joining Sam Altman, Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, and all these other big tech CEOs and "AI" promoters is 's own mayor (and ShotSpotter promoter) Bruce Harrell.

These are the people who we are supposed to trust to develop policies on "AI’s Responsible Development" and to "Promote Safe and Secure Use of AI".

I feel safer already! /s

One of my bike curmudgeon opinions: Trigger shifters are terrible. The only positive thing I can say about them is that they’re probably better than grip shifters. Watching my kindergartener struggle to shift down is only solidifying this opinion. Good old thumb shifters remain the best shifter style for most everyday bikes.

trigonella,
@trigonella@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@seabikeblog For my kid it's not the shifter that's the main problem, it's remembering to downshift before you make a stop or hit a hill. He's often in the situation of being in top gear when starting from a dead stop or reaching an uphill section, which is frustrating especially when already tired/cranky.

It's too bad internal gear hubs are so expensive, otherwise they would be ideal for kids' bikes.

Yesterday I visited the new location of Spice SPC (Indian grocery store in Seattle) for the first time (on 21st & Denny, right on the bike greenway!) It's bigger than the old Hiawatha location and has some more stuff. I could find all my needs.

If you're looking for Indian spices/ingredients in a bike-friendly location in central Seattle, this is your spot.

Current forecast says it's going to be 15°F in in a week 🥶

Will find out how well my new heat pump does under the circumstances. Hope the power doesn't go out, and that I remember to clothe my outdoor faucets. What else am I missing?

(Yes I know 15°F makes midwest folks snicker but this is a big deal here!)

Q: What online publications do you pay for, either as a subscription or donation?

(I’m thinking more of blogs, magazines, news outlets, etc. as opposed to audio or video)

trigonella,
@trigonella@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@anirvan Thanks for the timely reminder to support journalism! Mine are:

  • Local (i.e. ): South Seattle Emerald, Publicola, Real Change, The Urbanist, KNKX

  • Global (but US-centric): Propublica

P. Sainath once said something like, you don't get to complain about bad media if you are not subscribing to at least one source of good media, and I think that is a great thing to keep in mind.

The frustrating thing about buying plastic anything is they never tell you what it's made of.

They will tell you what it's not made of (e.g. "BPA-free") but they won't say what it is made of.

I guess they're figuring that for most consumers, "polypropylene" or "PET" or "HDPE" sounds more scary than "BPA-free plastic", but for me it's the other way around. I know what polypropylene is, or at least I can look it up and see; I have zero idea what BPA-free plastic is.

I'm looking for neurodiversity-affirming and interesting and fun books, graphic novels, videos, or other resources to recommend to parents of allistic+abled children (6-10 years old) to introduce them to autistic people (esp autistic kids), so they can learn to better understand, accommodate, and ally with my disabled autistic kid, through reading a fun non-lecturey comic book or the like.

Stuff in the vein of Raina Telgemeier would be perfect.

Any recommendations?

"During a 2010 arrest, he and 14 other officers nearly beat to death a schizophrenic man, leaving him with brain damage .... In 2015 he punched and choked a homeless man at the hospital, ... In 2016, the OPA investigated him for punching a woman in handcuffs. The agency investigated him twice that year for punching women, the second of whom he punched in the face. None of these incidents resulted in consequences for him."

Almost all the plastic poles "protecting" the Protected Bike Lane on the Jose Rizal bridge have been torn off by errant cars. The city won't put in sturdy barriers, although they are happy to install those for anti-homeless RV parking obstructions.

Presumably persecuting the homeless is a higher priority for SDOT than cyclists' lives.

Another public water fountain that's been turned off.

Our city has decided that we can't have nice things, because that could make it also possible for a homeless person to enjoy the nice thing, and we can't have that.

There is a giant thread on 's “meta" subsite about whether it's moral to wish death on people.

https://metatalk.metafilter.com/26320/MetaFilter-has-a-real-problem-with-voicing-class-genocidal-attitudes

There's a comment near the end from @brainwane that I appreciate even while I disagree with her. Not about how she thinks about it, but I don't share her conclusions. I've never regretted even once hearing her thoughts, though, and you should definitely find the comment (by brainwane) and read it.

Is Stardew Valley good for an autistic, PDAer, anxious, easily dysregulated 6-year-old?

Or any other games to recommend? No in-app purchases pls. Trying to avoid violence and even adversaries, if possible. Classic building games that can be played offline seem best.

For e.g., he loves Roller Coaster Tycoon. But he is starting to get a little bored and dysregulated by it because he has hit a cliff in terms of winning hard levels.

PS: also, seeking opinions on Animal Crossing as well.

For clarity, I know practically nothing about games or gaming myself. So don't worry about stating the obvious - it won't be obvious to me.

Oh, and the platform is MS Windows. (As I mentioned, ideally a game that can be downloaded and played offline.)
