The thing that kills me is that Reddit is sitting on what could have become, if they'd had leadership with the faintest hint of vision, the most wildly valuable dragon's-hoard treasure trove on the internet, an unimaginably vast pool of human-curated, human voted-on, human-loved-and-wanted information.

And the hill they've decided to die on is making it more difficult and more expensive for humans to add to it.

They had the future in-hand and they're pissing it away for the cashout.

Okay, and friends. I’m poking around for the “right way” to approach a problem: I want to calculate the overal homogeneity of many short snippets of text (phrases and sentences), and many large spans of text (500-1500 word documents).

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@eaton @danhon it sounds like you might get somewhere by computing a centroid (or K centroids)and then measuring average/stdev of "distance" to centroid for the cluster

Then (maybe) the average/stdev of distance to centroid might be comparable across corpora

Can I ask a possibly very stupid question?

This whole time I've been wondering... why didn't Trump just uh... scan all the documents and then give them back?

Obviously, that's still illegal and bad and wrong...

I guess because he wasn't going to do all that paperwork himself and asking someone else to do it creates a trail of evidence?

But I mean if he just wanted to keep the information so badly?

Or maybe he did do this too and we don't even know?

One thing I own which is cool as hell is a vibrating reed based tachometer.

Lots and lots of tiny reeds, each tuned for a specific frequency. Place it on a piece of equipment, and the reeds start to vibrate if they're the same frequency as the equipment.

Placing the tachometer on an Air Conditioner condenser

attending Narrascope introduced me to the work of Brianna Lei, since she gave the keynote. i’ve been playing her game Butterfly Soup & it’s sequel (https://brianna-lei.itch.io/butterfly-soup), which is about sapphic Asian-American teenagers who play baseball, and it’s absolutely as hilarious and gut-wrenching as advertised. i love how each of the 4 MCs are disasters in their own special ways

Still obsessing about seemingly being on its way to a somewhat underwhelming box office debut. I really think it doesn't have much to do with Ezra Miller, and instead has everything to do with how this movie was marketed.

The movie may or may not have a cool story, but the marketing was just "THERE ARE CAMEOS". If you don't care about old superhero movie trivia, they suggested, this film isn't for you.

trochee,

At least they could bring in some precedent for time travel shenanigans into the DCCU first, like Vandal Savage or the Legion of Superheroes

The Reddit situation appears to be a squatters' sit-down strike against the knowledge factory they work in unpaid

And the fact that this doesn't make sense to the 1930s labor concepts that the NLRB has to work with

well, that's symptomatic of the wholesale abandonment of the idea of collective labor organizing, which i would say got undermined by the California Ideology

Nerds should never have let technolibertarian capital get away with inflating the "garage hero" startup myth so much

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@jacobrogers256 yes, but the "open source" phenomenon is a capitalized enclosure of the "free software" phenomenon

even if you take Berkeley ideals and the FSF on their face

(though there's plenty of evidence that they're riddled with reactionaries, at least around gatekeeping the "open source/Free Software" space white and male)

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@jacobrogers256

in particular, i am calling out the California Ideology as such because the "we're all nerdy computer people, not like those business guys" and "open source" rhetorical maneuvers are at work in Reddit, and in bitcoin, and in the AI Hype surge, all of which are specifically part of the current enclosure effort

Don't get me wrong; blaseball is awesome & subversive too, but a very different direction for "fantasy casting"

Finding a few old contacts from The Other Sites, even now that I've been On Here for most of a year

And really wishing there was a way to request your local mastodon instance to backfill a new contact's posts

It wouldn't even have to be immediate. It could go into a low priority queue and get throttled by volume, but it would be nice to know that i could have the last, say,100 posts from my new acquaintance/friend from another instance synced to MY instance over the next 24 hours

The most foolish, useless hill I am willing to die on:

“Login” is a noun, “log in” is a verb, button labels are verbs or verb phrases, and thus every button-like affordance that’s labeled “Login” is wrong

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@inthehands

log-on is not a noun, unless it's maybe a description of the screechy sound of a 90s dial-up connecting

Sorry @merriamwebster you also got the frequencies wrong; a "log-in" is (marginally, tho better w/o hyphen) acceptable as a version of "handle", "identifier" . a "log-on" or "logon" is ... weird to this late Gen-X anglophone USian Old Internet User.

Not surprising that today's New York Times article about the singularity launders bullshit for big tech with just enough skepticism for plausible deniability.

More impressive: the article quotes 15 different people.

Sundar Pichai
Reid Hoffman
Bill Gates
Elon Musk
Sam Altman
Baldur Bjarnason
John von Neumann
Irving John Good
Hans Moravec
Ray Kurzweil
Rodney Brooks
Jerry Kaplan
Ryan Schaeffer
Eric Schmidt
Charlies Stross

Yes, every single one of them is a man.

But now I want a full rescue reboot, where Indiana is a(n indigenous) woman's name, but she's still a professor who fights Nazis with a bullwhip
