I've always wanted to try to get axis text directly on my plots like I've seen in the New York Times and other places. Finally figured it out with the help of the {ggh4x} package. Code here: https://rfor.us/axistext #rstats

I’ve been reading Advanced R and it’s got me daydreaming. If there was a Python 2 to Python 3 type reckoning for R, what would be the changes you’d want implemented?

I’m a ‘not beginner’ who regularly interacts with beginners, so for me it would be

  • Clean break from anything that exists “for compatibility with S”
  • Total rewrite of the base docs for normal humans, with simple examples before all else… (1/3)

{emphatic} typst support: added!

Good news: It works!

Bad news: I can't work out how to disable text wrapping and/or set overflow in a block to be hidden.

Large tables make 'typst' want to reflow the text which I expressly do NOT want to do.

I've added a 'font_size' option to help deal with this, but being able to control reflow/overflow would be better!

Very happy to see the first version of R translated into Catalan. Only about 2000 messages have been translated, out of the nearly 9000 of the original English version, but the first step is done!

This would not have been possible without the joint effort with Joan Maspons and @Lluis_Revilla, the valuable advice from @toniher, the automatic translator from @softcatala and the help and determination of @daroczig, @michaelchirico and Michael Lawrence to make R available in any language.

Last night I opened up YT in a private window, & clicked on an unrelated video to that of the one I had just watched. It was a video on arctic ice melts that turned out to be 100% denialist.

One click & there I was in endless fetid scroll of Jordan Peterson, climate change denial, 'what is woke' explainers, 'lol snowflakes' shorts, Trump propaganda, knife fights, & misogynistic, racist garbage.

Don't tell me Big Tech aren't culpable for the hate out there. They're farming it, on a vast scale.

I don‘t agree with much, but some points are worth for discussion / improvement.

I love how many people that believe in “overpopulation” think 'we' can somehow impose dystopian one-child policies over the entire world through some sort of world government, instead of just fixing this system of overconsumption and waste.

ErikUden,
@ErikUden@mastodon.de avatar

If you think about it: overpopulation doesn't exist. Humanity can harbour billions more people than exist today, a multitude of those, even! We have (and already produce) more food than would be needed to feed everyone many times over, yet people still go hungry. Additionally, current estimates see humanity's total population stabilize at ~11 billion.

The idea that there are simply too many people nowadays weirdly only came up the moment birth rates in western nations declined — the idea of overpopulation is hence a racist myth. It's a problem of distributing resources, not the amount of people that need or produce those resources!

We have enough food, wealth, and space for everyone, just a small sum of people (billionaires) hoard more than they need resulting in the poverty of the many. When the resources are distributed in a way that only a few get them, you wouldn't claim the problem is the amount of people, right?

For some reason, world hunger, poverty, etc. have always been around. The larger the population grows, the larger this system that distributes resources grows along with it. It's this system of distribution that's wrong and unfair. Simply saying “the people are at fault, we're all just greedy” is counter-productive, because it makes the problem seem unfixable, much rather it pretends as if the problem lies within human nature (which isn't the truth).

There's an economic system that distributes resources in the most unjust manner, the amount of people is irrelevant, and this problem is fixable, despite how incorrect the word “overpopulation” frames the issue.

With this one the thrust is basically there are a number of "seemed like a good idea at the time" type approaches to reusing data analysis work that deliver benefit in the short term, but will get you absolutely wrecked by complexity and technical debt over the long term. I have found only one scalable way to manage the complexity of building data science capability. Yes it involves writing lots of packages 📦 📦 📦 📦 📦 😅
