vexikron,

Ok so the truck with a stainless steel exterior that actually rusts, that is bullet proof but only against 9mm rounds, this electrically powered thing that is gonna have you survive the apocalypse (where I’m sure the cell networks and electrical power grid will be functional)…

…this things wheel’s come off when you hit a… 10 inch high concrete slab at… 30 mph? Less?

I mean, I get thats a bit much to ask from all but a military grade MRAP or L-ATV or something… but isnt that /basically/ what Elon has marketed this thing as? An apocalypse proof vehicle?

If only the guy had crashed it into a decently deep fountain we could see how well its amphibious mode works.

Is that feature still in the ‘fever dream’ stage of development or do they actually offer it as additional feature?

vexikron,

Honest question: Where the hell are they gonna come up with 2.4 mil?

I have no clue how Yuzu as an organization is funded.

vexikron,

I appreciate the straightforward answer, thanks!

But uh… fuck. This fucking sucks, Yuzu is basically dead now, they have to disband and take down their code.

If Yuzu lives it will only be pirate copies floating around, further development will… basically have to go underground more like game crackers, as this very settlement establishes that Nintendo will sue you into oblivion if you publicly work on this.

vexikron,

The dude is apparently quite the spender but goddamnit he’s one of the most talented and versatile actors ever.

Are there any movies where he just phones it in?

Not that I’m aware of.

Keep going strong you magnificent maniac hahah.

Because rural voters are stupid, because Republicans have spent the last 30+ years destroying public education, especially in rural and minority heavy areas.

This isn’t an insult, its a fact.

When you’re uneducated and have little experience of the outside world… well, youre extremely easy to convince with rhetoric over actual policy results.

Then combine that with the massively super effective Republican media machine (Rush Limbaugh, Bill O Reilly, Sean Hannity, Ben Shapiro, Steve Bannon, Alex Jones) which reinforces the religion + culture + politics of the rural Republican areas, and there ya go.

I dunno, it seems obvious to me, but thats probably because I was raised by a ditto-head (Rush Limbaugh’s term for his followers) who later became a Q Anon, illegal-firearm-manufacturing-in-his-garage wacko, in a poor, technically suburban but realistically rural area.

Why latch on to Trump in particular?

Because he made it ok for them to mask off and hate all the things they hate but have been lying about hating for decades.

Its a kind of catharsis for them, that manifests in collective hatred of inferior enemy groups.

You know, standard fascist shit?

It doesnt matter that Trump himself is the antithesis of what an idealized Republican person would be. What matters is he lets them feel comfortable expressing themselves.

vexikron,

Yeah they basically falsely advertised that they had it for years, even though it didnt actually work.

vexikron,

Firstly: wow, an actual unpopular opinion!

Secondly: I will go so far as to say absolutely tooooons of people wear earrings that I personally find extremely silly, unfashionable, or outright gross.

Sorry ear plug people. They look goofy when theyre in and they look horrifying when theyre out.

Probably this opinion of mine comes from knowing a person who managed to get their … ear loop? caught on something and tear apart.

Also: I think its child abuse to force a 3 to 9 year old to get their ears pierced.

I used to date a person who worked at a Claire’s… and they would tell me that they would often, as in multiple times a week, have a family of recent immigrants from… India? Bangladesh? … come into the store, and they would have to physically restrain a screaming obviously unwilling child to get their ears pierced.

Anyway: I think it is too far to agree that earrings in general are just bad all the time, but there are lots of cases where theyre done poorly.

vexikron,

Contextually this is a … board? Sublemmy?.. whatever, the context is obviously opinions, it completely makes sense that in an opinion … zone… someone would state their opinion frankly or cavalierly.

vexikron,

Haha!

The youngest my ex was pretty sure they were forced to pierce was was 3.

For the record: It’s also child abuse to force a 2, 1, 0, or frozen zygote in an IVF lab to get it’s ears pierced unwillingly rofl.

Copilot misses the question, elaborates on topic I was speaking aloud instead. (lemmy.world)

Was using my SO’s laptop, I had been talking (not searching, or otherwise typing) about some VPN solutions for my homelab, and had the curiosity to use the new big copilot button and ask what it can do. The beginning of this context was actually me asking if it can turn off my computer for me (it cannot) and I ask this....

vexikron, (edited )

Absolutely amazing.

My guess is that at this point there are so many user prompts its received so far in its training set that bring up both Copilot and privacy concerns that it first interpreted the question, then searched for the most common topic associated with itself (privacy), then spit out a hardcoded MSFT override response for ‘inquiry’ + ‘privacy’.

vexikron, (edited )

MSFT appears to still be using a fundamentally old chatbot model that they’ve just slapped a bunch of extra ‘features’ (namely, Wooow! It has APIs and works on other MSFT stuff!) to, much like Bethesda’s game engine.

Probably barely different from Tay in terms of broad conceptual design, just patched and upgraded to do what it does faster.

The core design is garbage, and just like Windows itself, its nearly certainly a giant fucking mess of layers upon layers of different versions of itself hiding under a trench coat, all standing on top of something 10 to 20 years old.

vexikron, (edited )

As a person who used to work at MSFT:

I can almost guarantee you there are a whoooole lot of people who have made their careers basically championing the very old chat bot model, and they are probably now either directly in charge of the OpenAI stuff, or at the very least ‘stakeholders’.

They will do nonsense corporate bullshit to make them selves seem very important, never really wrong about anything, and this will result in extremely slow and gradual actual adoption of the GPT stuff, all the while stressing all the reasons their old stupid bullshit can’t be seriously modified because of reasons that have to do with synergizing with other MSFT products.

The process of the company gradually figuring out that none of that matters when it comes to producing something that is actually better will be slow, painful and incremental.

Itll probably take half a decade.

For reference, as an aside, I was doing a contract of DBA kinda stuff when they unveiled Windows 8. We had to dogfood it, ie, the MSFT process of everyone working at MSFT has to beta test everything else MSFT is making.

Well… Windows 8 initially broke basically everything we were using to actually do DBA.

I got angry and pointed out that Windows 8 had removed the ‘windows’ from Windows. The initial version was soley the tablet based design, only allowing a maximum of two ‘panes’ open at a time.

We had to wait about a month for the various problems with SQL Manager Studio to be ironed out, and for them to basically allow the option to just use the more or less Windows 7 desktop for you know actually working on our PCs.

Point of me mentioning this is: I saw how ludicrous this all was, and was frequently verbally abused by our team lead for pointing it out.

Youre not allowed to go against the grain at MSFT unless youre a big dog. And… you become a big dog by bullying people and vastly overstating the necessity of what your team is doing.

The culture there is downright psycho and sociopathic.

vexikron,

Gaetz is almost certainly a person who knowingly paid an underage girl for sex. The person who facilitated it basically already plead guilty and may be cooperating with investigators, though the proceedings of this seem to be going quite slowly.

This is even more insane given that Gaetz is one of the most Q-Anony of the lunatic Republicans in Congress. Kind of their whole thing is largely based around saving children from being sex trafficked.

vexikron,

Its insane when you compare the things they hold dear and are most concerned about to themselves personally and the people they support.

They will tell you they are highly worried about secret sex trafficking and millions of missing children, but extremely often they and the people they support are sexually abusing children, or have a history of it.

Its the cognitive dissonance thats the insane part, the extreme hypocrisy.

vexikron,

And thats what we call gaslighting!

Very cool, very funny, very good behavior!

vexikron,

They should each construct a giant mecha and duel each other for various territories ala Robot Jox:

The Boomers in America will generally have their wealth eaten up by astounding healthcare costs before much or any of it gets handed down.

Not sure how anyone can really come to any broad conclusion other than that, excepting edge cases and the significantly wealthy.

The Boomers will just keep doing second or third or reverse mortgages or whatever until they finally downsize or move into old folks homes, sure maybe one of their kids gets the house, more likely they sell it to cover their debts, or if they do pass it on, at that point its basically financially wrecked.

Truly astounding that the real estate man being taken at face value isnt mentioning any of the financing of homes.

vexikron,

What this tells you is that a man who spent a huge chunk of his life working for corporate cannibalization companies thinks that Trump would be so bad for the economy that even predatory corporations would suffer.

Its not like Romney ever had any actual policy positions based on anything other than political expedience.

'Course Republicans these days dont even seem to be pretending they have any coherent policy positions beyond ‘we hate immigrants’ and ‘women dont deserve basic human rights’.

Bleck.

Thomas Creech's execution canceled, IV line couldn't be established (www.boisestatepublicradio.org)

Imagine if they DID “have the facilities” to kill him by firing squad. They’d spend 45 minutes trying to figure out how to load their rifles, kill a few members of the squad by mistake, then proceed to graze this guy a half dozen times if they were lucky. Idaho. Famous potato-heads....

vexikron,

A correctly done hanging snaps the neck instantly and is nearly certainly less painful and drawn out than lethal injection. You are basically totally brain dead within I think under 10 seconds.

Obviously an incorrectly done hanging is horrible as you asphyxiate in an extremely painful physical position.

Technically lethal injection methods vary, but the last thing I remember reading about them was… they do not actually render you unconscious and then inject the stuff that kills you.

They render you /paralyzed/, and then inject the stuff that kills you, which more or less make you feel as if your blood is on fire, and this can take up to 2 minutes before it flatlines your heart… brain probably takes longer to die, all in extreme agony.

vexikron, (edited )

True, but then you have that whole weird… few seconds of being able to move your eyes and possibly make facial expressions while your head rolls around thing haha.

And yes, a properly sharpened, weighted and … drop heighted… guillotine will lop off your head every time.

Takes a fair amount of strength and finesse to chop someones head off on a block. IIIRC, there are more than a couple recorded instances of bad executioners having to make a number of swings to totally off somebody’s head. Bleeeegh.

vexikron,

It isnt so much vaporware as basically massively bad funding model and development practices.

They have software. There is a ‘game’ you can ‘play’.

Its just that its still buggy as fuck and the gameplay doesnt really meaningfully work.

Its… more like an alpha that never stops adding features and content… and as a result, never does a feature lock and actually make what they have into a non buggy, actually compelling game.

vexikron, (edited )

I made JC Denton as close as I could to his actual character and appearance.

He ended up being a ladies man despite my best attempts to get him to focus on his career.

EDIT:

I am reasonably sure you cant do this in the newer games… but in the original, I remember marrying as many partners as possible, sending them upstairs and then deleting the stairs.

They would all get into jealously related brawls until eventually the entire town had no more single ladies other than the one remaining highlander wife.

Also I am pretty sure in the original, when the grim reaper appears, you can enclose him in walls and then never load that particular house again.

Grim is for some reason a singular entity world npc in the whole game. If he’s stuck… no one ever dies again.

vexikron,

The gnomes?

The gnomes that would /occasionally/ move randomly about your property when your view did not encompass their position, and your sim was neurotic enough?

vexikron,

Fine.

I’ll settle for it.

Still, stiiiill mad that the planned TV series for Trent Reznor’s Year Zero universe never happened.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=g06-b_dlcJY

Well imagine having to go through basically a sequence similar to this multiple times as a 9 year old, to complete the game.

It left an impression.

Crazy sexy fairy lady cackle set to otherwise calm harp music. Pretty damned weird.
