witty_username,

I don’t drink during lent each year. Last year, I didn’t pick it up again once lent was over. I have been sober for one year now and I am enjoying the crap out of it! Especially how well rested I feel. Would recommend. Here’s to extending my streak for another year! You can do it too!

witty_username,

Episode 1 racer. I finished the game multiple times before realising that there was a turbo you could activate

witty_username,

Tldr: we haven’t crossed the barrier because we are currently in the process of crossing the barrier and also not all climate scientists agree on what constitutes crossing the barrier.

Weak little piece fron the Washington post

witty_username,

That’s not an argument, you’re just contradicting me

It is no secret that Gandalf has a gift when it comes to communicating with birds

witty_username,

Isn’t this driven by grouping children by age? I.e. a kid born 6 months before the school year will have a developmental advantage over the other kids in the same group. If so, the title could be changed to: using age to group children creates unfair differences in competencies.

witty_username,

Just installed it. Seems pretty slick. Haven’t tried the import from youtube yet though

How is is possible that that AP piece does not properly cite the original publication? No DOI, nothing
– maybe the paper is not out yet? Don’t see it on Chang lab site: med.stanford.edu/changlab/publications.html

Oof that show didn’t age well imo. I wonder what they’re going to do with the movie

– holy smokes antman, I appear to have an unpopular opinion. Just to offer some clarification: the show has some homophobic jokes (not just Pierce being a boomer), I’m not a big fan of how the dean is portrayed, and I dislike the jokes about not sexualising Annie while doing precisely that. At any rate, I harbour no ill will towards people who like the show. It certainly has a bunch of fun moments and I wonder what they are going to come up with for the movie

Ukrainians who have moved to the UK have highlighted the lack of dentists as among the most astonishing aspects of British life (www.theguardian.com)

One woman in her 30s, Boyka, told the researchers: “We don’t have a dentist. It’s crazy. For us, it’s, like, impossible! In Ukraine the dentist industry is huge, you know, everywhere, and because it’s everywhere you just go and it’s like £10, £8, and you can clean it, whiten it like [a] Hollywood smile!...

witty_username,

The English ruling class has a very unhealthy admiration for the USA. Unfortunately, a lot in the UK is decided by them.
Imo the only solution would be to change the UK voting system to something less insane (and undemocratic) than the current system. Also, they’d do well to limit the proportion of politicians who were educated in one of their elite schools (even better, do away with those schools altogether)

Abstract: Magnetic properties of materials ranging from conventional ferromagnetic metals to strongly correlated materials such as cuprates originate from Coulomb exchange interactions. The existence of alternate mechanisms for magnetism that could naturally facilitate electrical control has been discussed theoretically, but an experimental demonstration in an extended system has been missing. Here we investigate MoSe2/WS2 van der Waals heterostructures in the vicinity of Mott insulator states of electrons forming a frustrated triangular lattice and observe direct evidence of magnetic correlations originating from a kinetic mechanism. By directly measuring electronic magnetization through the strength of the polarization-selective attractive polaron resonance, we find that when the Mott state is electron-doped, the system exhibits ferromagnetic correlations in agreement with the Nagaoka mechanism.

Archaeologists say single word inscribed on iron knife is oldest writing ever found in Denmark (www.cbsnews.com)

Archaeologists in Denmark have found a small knife inscribed with runic letters dating back almost 2,000 years, the oldest trace of writing found in the country, the Museum Odense said on Tuesday. Runic letters, called runes, are the oldest alphabet known in Scandinavia....

Archaeologists unearth rare 14th-century armor near Swiss castle: "Sensational find" (www.cbsnews.com)

Archaeologists in Switzerland recently made an unusual discovery while excavating the land around a medieval castle near the German border. The crews unearthed a well-preserved gauntlet that experts believe was forged during the 14th century, which would be unprecedented, officials said in an announcement that described the...
