This was the event that broke my ability to tolerate the left. After the police released video of Michael Brown robbing a convenience, John Oliver excoriated them. He said it was irresponsible of the police to show something that was irrelevant to the shooting, because all that mattered was what happened at the moment he was shot. However, he never criticized the media’s characterization of Brown as “a gentle giant.” He was just pissed there was proof the media lied.

if only the peasants (low IQ people) would have known their place (as near slaves), we superiors (of course Amerika counts himself among them) could've continued to manage society correctly for their benefit (profit off of them) and never had to import those troublesome savages (to use as actual slaves).

it's like assuming that because even most Democrats in Congress (House and Senate) won't support , the American people don't want it by overwhelming margins. same with massively shrinking the Pentagon budget. is there an alternative explanation besides that y'all are corrupted by donors?

I actually love your focus on civic structural issues, but this is the key reform we need. Partisanship and gerrymandering and the overwhelming power of the leaders is a much bigger problem than having too many voters per representative.

I get that, statesman vs representative. and there are structural issues. but over time, when the entire public wants something and other countries have shown it can work for decades, what else explains government failure to deliver? Biden promised a public option in the campaign and has done nothing since. what is the argument against it? have you ever explained your opposition? we could at least lower the eligibility age.

One of my biggest concerns about switching over to Mastodon when I did, was losing the online Black community I developed on birb site, many of whom were very helpful to my continuing to thrive as I negotiated white supremacist spaces in my professional and personal life. I am very happy to find another such community here, and want to give a shout outs to SOME (wish I could tag everybody - the search function is pretty terrible here for some reason) of the people that keep me coming back to the Fediverse. maybe it's an American thing, but we're both Gen X I think. I feel like when there was a disconnect, we'd say the problem is with the system. now kids think the problem is with them. I just kinda hate that.

I know there are kids who say they're in the wrong body as soon as they can talk, but there are other kids who come to it much later. For the latter group, I worry that the problem is our social conventions on gender pushing them to think they should do something about their body.

And I'm not trying to take anything away. I'm arguing that for the latter group, we approach the issue as more of an individual fight that maybe they can find a supportive group to help them with, instead of seeing social norms as needing changing. I think we do this with race too. It's an identity approach that's acceptable to corporate America instead of one that is more challenging of their power. DEI instead of Fred Hampton. how do you advertise without stereotypes etc?

The tricky thing about the is that we have instances but not federated groups yet AFAIK. Being decentralized is essential and that requires picking a server, but that choice shouldn't define my primary identity or tribe. It's my account. Supporting free speech doesn't mean you have to constantly subject yourself to the dumbest, cruelest bullshit. It does mean you have to give the claims and arguments you deem as that today, a fair opportunity to be heard by others and argued against but maybe become popular in the larger culture. I know that sucks, but that's the bargain so that ideas that were once very unpopular like women's suffrage, racial equality and gay marriage could also go viral.
