A hearty hello from #Portland & the Pacific Northwest! 🌲 I'm a b/v+logger, podcaster, #Ruby & #WebDev-eloper, photographer, and musician.

I work on https://ruby.social/@bridgetown, a Ruby web framework. I also talk about ethics in content creation and activism against unregulated generative AI. Nice to meet you! #fedi22

Why do people park e-scooters in bike racks? That’s so inconsiderate of cyclists.

jaredwhite,

@knowler Right, unless they're using an actual lock that's connected to the rack (unlikely), there's no point. I often park near a rack but ensure there's enough room for bikes to access the rack.

“The ubiquity of the "artificial intelligence" category in tech today might be the most phenomenally successful act of rebranding in corporate history.”

Indeed. If everything's suddenly “AI”, then nothing is AI. https://www.axios.com/2023/06/20/ai-everything-definition-label-hype

Someone trying to insult me by suggesting that I’m a sex worker was a new one this weekend.

Look, I have nothing but tremendous respect for sex workers. This is not an insult.

Amateur!

jaredwhite,

@esther There's probably nothing more deflating to a trollish insult than a response of "why, thank you! very kind of you to say!" 😂

Now that RailsWorld has sold out, he openly admits it was put on to “route around the nonsense” of not being asked to keynote RailsConf. (This is what I said all along.)

Cookpad, Doximity, Fleetio, GitHub, Intercom, Procore, Shopify, AppSignal, Cedarcode and Planet Argon, you should be ashamed to sponsor this shit show.

He’s playing you for fools and you’re lapping it up.

jaredwhite,

@joeldrapper Geeeez! It really grinds my gears that anyone acted like this was anything other than a DHH power trip, and the fact the rest of the Rails core team is going along with it is frankly astonishing to me.

Ha-ha, Putin you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is “Never get involved in a land war in Asia”

jaredwhite,

@gedeonm Bummer! Don't give up entirely… Bear is a really awesome app and I've been using it for years. 👍

9to5Mac's access to Twitter's API has once again been killed. This always seems to happen on Friday nights.

At a certain point, we are going to have to stop jumping through hoops to post on Twitter.

jaredwhite,

@ChanceHMiller Argh, that really sucks. 🙁

(FWIW, I really appreciate all the links y'all post here 🙏)

The New CSS: https://matthiasott.com/notes/the-new-css
I love the enthusiasm, but, in my experience, in a lot of teams we might mostly go from “you can’t do that with CSS” to “yeah, you can do it with CSS, BUT, it’s not part of our React component”. We need more people to learn CSS. And frameworks to follow with the new cool features!

jaredwhite,

@u0421793 @stephaniewalter But the kinds of hoops you had to go through to build even basic layouts years ago can now be built with just a few lines of code. Some of the new features make things easier to reason about, not harder. I don't have any qualms about teaching CSS, in fact I'm planning to do so in the near future. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Trump is still pulling the strings of the GOP, and they are desperate to please him at the expense of the United States of America. Michael Cohen goes live on a new POLITICAL BEATDOWN at 4:30p ET/1:30p PT to discuss the latest! https://www.youtube.com/live/FCvxLQitp8U?feature=share

Netlify abandoning Eleventy after acquiring Gatsby is just sad.

https://www.zachleat.com/web/eleventy-side-project/

jaredwhite,

@Jeremiah I think they're getting out of the "website built with a static site generator" market entirely. For a movement Netlify was instrumental in kickstarting mere years ago, it's upsetting they seem to have left it by the wayside in favor of pursing "content meshes" for large enterprises. Can't say I'm surprised with all the VC investment money they need to justify, but it's sure a kick in the teeth for the average web developer. 🤨

I overheard Rob Eisenberg use the phrase "standards-aligned innovation" in a recent panel talking about , and it's my absolute favorite new phrase when talking about .

It's not about "vanilla" yes/no as if it's a binary. We will always have some degree of third-party activity on the web, building libraries and even frameworks on top of the specs.

But do those libraries/frameworks try to align with where standards are headed? Or are they off in the weeds somewhere?

I agree with @gruber. Not federating is certainly a choice admins can make, but it's unlikely to have an impact considering that Threads is being bootstrapped off the Instagram social graph.

Would you rather keep the fediverse restricted to its current population of ~8M people or scale it to ~2.35B+?

https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/06/19/not-that-kind-of-open

jaredwhite,

@chrismessina @gruber Agreed. An open protocol isn't truly open if we'll block whoever we don't like before there's even reason to do so (and don't get me wrong, I really, really don't like Meta!).

Here's my take: federate with Meta's product! And if/when they show signs of garbage (either moderation issues or some kind of embrace/extend operation), then you have my 100% support to defederate immediately. Blocking them on day 1 seems…pointless?

Both of these statements can be true:

  1. The Apple Vision Pro looks really awesome.
  2. I don't want yet another computing platform which is locked down and sandboxed up the wazoo.

Apple needs to make Vision Pro more like the Mac. If the only way you can install apps (and app-related content!) onto it is through a single proprietary marketplace…boooo.

(Only caveat which is not inconsequential: privacy is even more crucial. We really don't want our eyeballs tracked by Google/Meta/OpenAI/etc.)

jaredwhite,

@bp Unfortunately, no. I don't trust Apple to do the right thing here. It's their biggest blind spot because it's such a huge cash cow.

I'm hoping by the time AR/VR actually has a chance to go mainstream, legislation will force these companies' hands to open up their platforms.

"Reddit represents one of the largest data sets of just human beings talking about interesting things," Huffman said. "We are not in the business of giving that away for free."

You and me, we're just data sets. Years of interaction with fellow human beings, building community, sharing insight and creativity…it’s all just data. Data to be mined and monetized.

Huffman's not mad Reddit was scraped for a chatbot. He's mad he wasn't paid for the privilege. It's his data, you see. His. Not yours.

jaredwhite,

"We're 18 years old," Huffman said. "I think it's time we grow up and behave like an adult company."

Says the guy who's behaving like a petulant 5-year old.

Texas Republicans have signed a law preventing local governments- including cities with populations into the millions- from self-governing. Water restrictions in a drought? Can't do them. Laws to prevent pollution? Nope. Local regulations for higher wages? Also no.

jaredwhite,

@alexwild Republicans: local control is best! Less power at the federal level, more power at the state level!

Also Republicans: local control is bad! More power at the state level! Screw the cities!

Unfreakingbelievable.

Well fuck - they have just undeleted posts I made years ago that I'd removed when I did a purge a couple of years back.

So Reddit didn't actually delete the data - also these videos are no longer on YT so the thumb is cached

They are so fucked

jaredwhite,

@tanepiper Well this seems to put to rest the theory that only very recently deleted posts were reappearing because of some kind of data rollback. Ugh, what a sh*tshow.
