One of the disappointments of my adult life has been realizing that I’m way to the left of a lot of people - that things I think are sensible improvements that we need in order to help people have better lives are often seen as out of touch and overly-ideological.

xkummerer,

@ben ironically defending the status quo with all sorts of neoliberal free market hot-air is never ever perceived as ideological

So I stagger sleepily into the kitchen to make breakfast, and I break an egg open, and it's a double yolk! And I'm like ha ha, rolled an S rank egg. And then I break a second egg, and it's ALSO a double yolk. And I'm like ha… ha but I'm getting a little nervous. And then I break my THIRD egg and it's ALSO a double yolk and I'm just like what the fuck?? Triple double yolk???

Beginning to get really irritated by the fetishization of "the moderate". I don't know that war, genocide, climate disasters, and the strip-mining of society by an oligarchic class are best addressed by moderation.

xkummerer,

@ben and while political parties somewhat covered by the "democratic" spectrum are in a race to the bottom promoting "moderation" elections are won by literal fascists

Holy cow, this is bad - check out the nonsensical figures in this review: completely generated in Midjourney (!!), not even re-labeling the gibberish text labels (!!!).

This was published by Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, where the editorial office should have caught this and nuked it from orbit. Wow.

I don't get it people. There is this whole big drum banging about how the language is immutable.

Yet, here in the most basic example, "a" has 3 different values in the same session.

That seems pretty mutable to me! So in what way is this language immutable? Help me understand!

xkummerer,

@codemonkeymike @orsinium the subtle difference is it will change what a points to, it will not change the value that a previously pointed to.

People who worked in C++ their whole lives be like "I just love how simple and minimal Rust really is"

    xkummerer,

@rml people that use a lisp-like lang whenever they can get away with it be like: OMG that is baroque, so much context switching in the syntax alone and hmmm those are not macros this is a write-only STL-like mess all over again - they got cargo pretty right though.

    rml, (edited ) to random

Its honestly ridiculous that so many people seem to think that if you maintain libraries in rust or clojure or typescript its "production software", regardless of whether its deployed in production, but if you maintain a library with the same functionality in any lisp thats not clojure its "a hobby", even if its an emacs package used every day by countless programmers.

but then again, most production software is bad, and most things people put their heart and soul into tends to be good (:

is there an easy way to record whatever is arriving at a particular sink? or coming from a particular source? will i need to set up virtual sinks and do some manual routing or is there a simpler way?

    xkummerer,

@computersandblues @yaxu Basically In.ar will give you sc's output if you \addToTail the synth, from there you can record (to a buffer or disk) in combination with ReplaceOut.ar I use it all the time to control overall output volume or EQ a bit.

Thinking about why people avoid the news, in the context of my own disengagement around international topics. I’m not following the ins and outs of the conflict in Ukraine, for example, and I feel guilty about it, because we’re all connected to it in deep ways - and what an American stereotype to only be preoccupied with what’s happening internally.

But I also feel utterly powerless. It will happen how it’s going to happen regardless of what I do or think. How to break out of that?

    xkummerer,

@ben "news" telling me I worry too much because some future silver bullet to be invented yet will magically fix all the current problems isn't helping either.

167 applications for the algorithmic pattern residency! nice but a really tough choice. Hopefully we can stretch our budget to supporting two. We made the application form as quick and easy to fill as possible, but the low chances of success are a concern.. It'll be hard to disappoint so many people.
