Wenn ich denk was die Alternativen sind, bin ich von denen aber auch ned überzeugt:

  • Platzlotterie, wer zuerst kommt fährt mit und der Rest nicht. Keine Planungssicherheit.

  • Immer Überkapazitäten haben, was halt auch mehr Resourcen und Energie verbraucht.

Die ÖBB tendiert eh leicht zu zweiteres und löst das Problem damit meistens sehr gut, oder?

Great / article.

Excellently sums up how Internet platforms went wrong these last 15yrs.

They actively prevent you from leaving or transferring your account. They don't let you export data in meaningful ways. Don't support backups. Wall you in and hold your friendships hostage.

By doing this, they stifled innovation, competition and improvement,

making things worse for everyone by preventing improvement!

Point in case: in #ycombinator and other accelerators, facebook clones never get funding, because even if you build a much better platform, FB would not allow you to switch there.

Point in case: SaaS is all the rage in business, because it follows the same principle of catching customers and keeping full control over what they do and have.

The additional problem today is. Some platforms got so big, that the power balance itself will distort things, even if interoperability is mandated.

On the one hand: Super cool technology. Would love to have one and use it as fancy futuristic ssh terminal.

On the other hand:
It lidar+3d cam scans everything around you. It captures all your hand movements. It tracks your eyes, what you are looking at and likely for how long. It measures your pulse.

Having this data while people are browsing the web, online-shopping or using apps and games, is a gold mine and corporate wet dream.

Like blogs, the Fediverse does not need to win. This is not about having the most users. Or making the most money. This is about interested people finding and connecting. It doesn’t really matter how large it is. It never mattered how many blogs there have been. But each blog is valid, even if it is only read by a handful people. And so is the Fediverse. People publishing, connecting.

For years now I've been complaining that the amount of blogs has dwindled drastically with the advent of youtube explain videos. Today, often you can't find a simple explanation blog, but instead you only get a long winded YT video.

It began with monetisation, which worked better on Youtube than blogs. Now it's also because all the audience is there and creators are copying other creators.

The videos are often ok, but not text and annoyingly long.

I think defederating Threads is a huge missed opportunity for Mastodon to grow.

Imagine interacting with their users and letting them know that: you scroll posts without ads, your timeline is in chronological order, your client doesn’t spy on you, you only see what you want and no other content is pushed to your timeline, etc…

if I was a Threads users, I would move to Mastodon as soon as I find out 🙂

But most people are perfectly content with all the ads they are being served by Threads. They won't know the difference, because they have never experienced it and they won't care to invest the trouble to find out.

Also I suspect Mastodon posts will be dwarfed in volume by threads post, so nobody will notice. Meta won't open T for Federation until that's true. They know what they are doing. Worst case they will just downrate anything that mentions Mastodon

It was one of the first things I read. If power between instances would be distributed about equally, I would fully agree.

However I extrapolate from FB history, that FB/meta/T will only federate If the power asymmetry is decidedly in their favor.

We don't precisely understand how this will hurt Mastodon yet, but we can be certain that ppl at T are looking into ways to accomplish that, daily.

Maybe not federating won't make a difference. But we can wait and try.

Has anyone ever encountered that an analog switch randomly clamps its output at certain (44Khz+) frequencies?
3.3V input looks good and the output (pic) gets clamped to ~2V.
This happens with and without a load (receiving IC input) connected but varies in severity.

How much resistance does the switch have? Did you measure it? Also it must have some capacitance at 20kHz somewhere if what you are showing is the output after you input a square wave.

PSA for work:

Always remember, your boss depends on you.

While learning the skills to get many people to work in concert and distribute tasks, they can seldom practice their previous skills.

Even though a single person, they can promise the work output of many, but they are also completely lost without their employees.

Thus, fair and adequate compensation, sharing of stakes and humane interaction is a must.

It's everyone's job to give it as well as demand it.
