Microsoft has had multi-billion dollar Pentagon and other agency contracts for many years now, and the things they produce are used wherever the U.S. Government wants to use them, including as tools for war and border control."

100% this. is so embedded in that it is hard to take any complaints about other partners or sponsors seriously.

@BrodieOnLinux @ck I've been using nix as my main OS for a few years now. I'm by no means an expert. I have submitted a package to the nix package repo.

Would be happy to chat with you about it.

Let us have a little chat about the person who accused @brysonbort of gaming RSA talk submissions by submitting a talk with me by "playing the diversity card" to get accepted. And all the people thinking it and simmering.

Thank you kindly for completely devaluing my expertise in my field, which I have worked in daily for over a decade and a half, served as a senior NCO in the military doing, teach, and speak on globally. Whether you consciously intended it or not, you implied I am a diversity token and not an expert in cybersecurity incident response.

It's actually good to purposefully share the stage with underrepresented voices in technology, because we still routinely have entire tech conferences that are 100% white and male speakers because of bad CFP boards and management. That was RSA keynotes, within my professional lifetime. It cost me and my colleagues a lot of goodwill calling them out at the time.

When I am "handed" a speaking slot explicitly because I am not a straight white man, it's usually on a droll topic I am totally unqualified to speak on, like "TeLL uS abOUT beINg a WomAN in TEch" that also devalues my expertise. Side note - this has turned out to be a huge red flag. Often done by people who go on to do Bad Stuff to women.

You, yes you are a prime reason women and nonbinary people don't want to submit to conferences.

I also think the issue needs to be addressed but not in this approach.

When you add quotas etc, there will always be the feeling that you were "playing the diversity card".

Here, the government will give grants to tech companies that hire people from my demographic. It is a real problem, there is very open discrimination. But, If I knew a company took money to hire me, or hired me to fill some quota, I would always feel like I wasn't hired cause of my skills.

What upsets me the most about is the usage of the least known English word for a given functionality, e.g. instead of "refresh buffer" it's "revert buffer" instead of copy and paste it's cut and yank...
It's like they having a secret guideline to not use words everybody knows and make sense, but to use some word that also means something similar in English but non native speakers are not aware of.

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@thomasmey Emacs terminology predates most of the terms like "copy/paste".

And "revert" buffer is correct. You are not refreshing it, rather reverting to the state of the backing file.

Ok, The modern State of has an obligation to defend its citizens from an invasion and targeting of civilian population. Regardless if there are here, and regardless if it is a so-called “bastion of freedom in the Middle East”. A state has the OBLIGATION to protect its citizens. It doesn't matter who is, if the land of Israel was still under British rule, the UK would have the same obligation. And it doesn't matter how Westernized the country is. One of the reasons we pay (a lot of) taxes if for defense.

woman was arrested in Indianapolis for what was initially thought to be an attack on a school but turned out to be an attack on a building housing a Jewish hate group🚨. The attacker, fueled by the Israel-Hamas conflict, mistakenly targeted a group known for its anti-Semitic views instead of her intended Jewish target🔁. This incident highlights the rising tensions and hate crimes in the US influenced by international conflicts, with the FBI Director issuing warnings about potential domestic attacks inspired by events in the Middle East🌍. The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to trigger extreme reactions, underscoring the urgent need for new, effective solutions to this longstanding issue🕊️. Seen in the wild on the Fedi: "There are lots of people supporting a two-state solution, who are not ."

Since is support for a state in the Jewish people's ancestral homeland, if you support a two-state solution (where is one of those states), you in fact support Zionism by definition. Welcome to the club!

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@benkap What is meant by "Jewish State"? Is it something that can be clearly defined?

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@bp @benkap I'm well aware of the war, daily sirens remind me. I also I know G-d wants jews to live in E"Y, (that is why I live here). The nature of our religion is about being precise. It is also the nature of our religion to talk about things and ask questions. You have never had a kasha on a tosfos?

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@bp @benkap I don't know what "blundstones" are. No one is being edgy.

There are lots of debates going on around the world right now. Hamas is awful, and I don't see any other solution rather than to destroy them.

I listened to the arguments for censoring the despicable person, Talib from congress. I'm glad the vote won. But at the same time lots of people.

I know what the religious Zionists mean, they mean a state that is run by halacha (eventually). But I don't know what the secular mean, and I for sure don't know what the Goyim mean.

If you don't want to engage in tough questions, that is your choice, you are welcome to mute me, but I would be sad.

FYI Here is a list of just some of the attacks on communities in the land of BEFORE WWII. Before Ben Gurion, Before your beloved Hertzel. Jewish history does not start with modern zionism.

Hebron and Safed massacres (1517)
Revival of Tiberias (1563)
Sack of Tiberias (1660)
Plunder of Safed (June 1834)
Hebron massacre (August 1834)
Safed attack (1838)

Don't be fooled into thinking that this has anything to do with how the modern state treats arabs in israel. The situation in gaza is just another excuse to attack Jews.

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@oatmeal I don't need to keep any Eurocentric references. I'm happy to use the ancient hebrew terminology if you want. Yiddish speaking Jews for centuries, called themselves Ashkanazim. You seem to have your facts mixed up.

Also I don't need to read anything from anyone named "Arthur" to understand my own community.

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@oatmeal Dude, you are assuming that I'm offended when I'm not. You are also stating things that are just completely not true. I have never once met someone that would not consider a Jewish Russian Immigrant Askanazi.

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@oatmeal
The term "Ashkenaz" has its roots in the Bible, specifically in the book of Genesis (10:3), where Ashkenaz is mentioned as a descendant of Japheth, one of Noah's sons. However, in the context of Jewish law (Halakha) and responsa (Poskim), the term "Ashkenaz" is generally used to refer to the customs, practices, and traditions of Jews who originated from Central and Eastern Europe.

The first significant references to Ashkenazi customs in Jewish legal literature can be traced back to the medieval period. Rabbis like Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, 1040–1105) in France and the Tosafists, his descendants and students, began to codify customs and laws that were specific to the Ashkenazi community. These were later incorporated into major works of Jewish law, such as the Tur (Arba'ah Turim) and the Shulchan Aruch, where distinctions are often made between Ashkenazi and Sephardi practices.

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@oatmeal

The Chayei Adam (Rabbi Avraham Danzig, 1748–1820, Lithuania) occasionally uses the term to specify customs unique to the Eastern European Jewish community.

The Mishnah Berurah (Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, also known as the Chofetz Chaim, 1839–1933, Poland) sometimes refers to "Minhag Ashkenaz" (the Eastern European custom) when explaining the law.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (1895–1986, Russia/USA), one of the leading legal authorities of the 20th century, also uses the term "Ashkenaz" in his responsa Igrot Moshe to clarify certain points of law as they pertain to the Eastern European Jewish community.

The Aruch HaShulchan (Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein, 1829–1908, Belarus) is another Eastern European legal authority who occasionally uses the term "Ashkenaz" to specify customs or laws that are particularly relevant to the Eastern European Jewish community.

@bp can you think of any other?

yisraeldov,
@yisraeldov@linuxrocks.online avatar

@bp I can't figure out if it is that, or if he is just a troll. Sadly, there probably are some "Israelis" that believe this foolishness.
