I play strategy games, write software, and stream on Peertube (not necessarily in that order). Also, sock monkeys! Preferred pronouns: he/him/his.

Occasionally someone brings up Lord of the Flies as some sort of real-life allegory of man's inhumanity to man, when it's nothing like that at all.

First, Lord of the Flies is fiction.

Not only is it fiction, it was based off of a real incident where a group of boys did get stranded on an island for a while until they were rescued. In the real life version, they all banded together, took care of the injured, and were in relatively good health when help finally arrived.

I've got a few months of hosting a instance and have learned quite a few things. One thing that surprised me was that the cost of storage and network bandwidth was not nearly as much as I thought it was going to be. That being said, the cost of hosting a server capable of handling the CPU loads of transcoding a live turned out to be quite higher than I was expecting.

I can afford it but it has me looking at what my plans are for the future with an eye towards cost. (cont'd)

I'm going to try to get that technical stream going today. One thing I need to be a bit careful about is hooking up my S3 bucket in the CMS config. I want to try to avoid exposing my credentials so I think I'll work on that before going live.

If it turns out I can't get around to it today, I'll do another Dwarf Fortress stream instead.

Some predictions I'll probably regret making later:

  • I feel like we will end up defaulting on our debt in June. I know we've been down this road before and we've always pulled a last minute deal but this feels different. The US House is under the control of an insurrectionist party and they are out for blood.

  • I don't think Biden will declare the 14th or "mint the coin". Both scenarios are fantasies.

  • I think the situation will last for several days at least. Longer maybe.

How generous of my bank to make sure I don't have to pay the $10 monthly service fee on my checking account as long as I have $500 in it.

It's no problem for me personally, but charging poor people for the privilege of banking while poor has always seemed wrong to me. 😡

I was going to do a "wait and see" approach to seeing how threads was going to pan out. Fortunately, they've given us a preview of how they will be run before they've connected themselves to the Fediverse.

And now I've seen enough. I will be preemptively blocking the domain on my self-hosted instance.

They've not only decided to host right wing hate groups but are actively coddling them. I'm not surprised of course, but it's good to see this with my own eyes before making any rash decisions.

So I have decided that I will start running and start streaming onto the fediverse.

After Glimesh.tv shut down it was pretty clear I needed to rethink what I wanted to do for streaming. Twitch has gotten sort of better but it's still not great. YouTube, every time I look into streaming there, finds more reasons to push me away.

I realized I have 80% of the system requirements to run a peertube instance and upgrading to 100% won't be that expensive.

All the hardware has arrived. The first step will be the hardest; getting Arch Linux onto the compute module. But the real nailbiter will be if I can get the PCIe SATA card seen by the kernel after I boot it up. Once that's done I just have to set up the RAID 10 array and get the volume exported via NFS and SMB. From there I can make it visible to the other devices on the network.

Easy peasy one two threesey.

So one parallel in history that Threads brings to mind, especially when we discuss the possibility that it may become federated, is AOL.

America Online, those of us over 40 may recall, was a dialup service people paid to access via modems over their telephone lines in the early 90s. It had competitors like Geocities and a few others, but it was the largest company of its type at the time

Your periodic reminder that "Generation X", "Millennials", etc aren't really a thing. They are marketing archetypes made up to sell you products by an industry obsessed with segmenting up a population into discreet chunks for the purposes and monetizing perceived generational divides.

To try to use an age group as a way to somehow define your identity is, at best, pointless and at worst plays to the propaganda of an industry seeking to carve us all into digestible groups for them to consume.

Expecting Gen Z to be tech savvy just because they grew up on TikTok is sort of like expecting Boomers to have a deep understanding how radio transmitters work because they grew up watching television.

Today on No Man's Sky: Omaga Update, we got our freighter! It's a C-class but it flies!

We traded in our starter ship for a B class shuttle but I need to make some money to continue trading up. I'd prefer a fighter or maybe one of those exotic class ships I've seen hanging around the star bases.

This afternoon we'll continue the Artemis story line and see how far we get!

Anyone knowledgeable about mushrooms have any information on what this species is? We found it on our neighbor's boulevard grass. We live in a residential urban area in Minnesota.

I saw another post that, paraphrased, said "See this framework for creating a web site these days has like 8 technology layers and this is why no one creates web sites anymore."

Ok, stop. Listen. Those frameworks are not designed for you. They are designed for company projects aimed at creating web applications. They are there to make lives easier for web devs who are paid to make these projects.

The complex technology stacks were made for complex projects. That's all. (cont'd)

So I was thinking of something the other day that surprised me, and continues to surprise me about once every five years since I started working in IT.

Software developers are, to put it succinctly, just only a little bit more computer literate than the general population.

Many of them know how to use the software in their own workflow quite well, but this is true for any profession. They don't usually have deep knowledge about how computers work in general however.

Power is going to be out for most of the day as we get our electrical panel in the basement replaced. The old one was probably put in in the 1980s and has never been really maintained all that well. It's also a 100 A system so we'll be upgrading to 200 A while we're at it (just in case we want to buy an electric car in the future I guess).

One thing I wish #PeerTube did was post a federated announcement whenever I went live. Right now I have to post things manually just like I did on Twitch which sort of defeats the purpose.

"But you can just create a new live video every time you go live and it will federate that" Do you know what a pain in the ass that is?

Overheard on Discord:

"I had to quit my job because my IT department issued me a MacBook for my web development job and it was literally unusable"

"Really? I use a MacBook for web development all the time and while it's got its flaws, it's overall a pretty solid platform."

"No I just didn't want to be part of the Apple ecosystem"

--

Ok, so "My MacBook is unusable" and "I don't like Apple" are very different statements. Pick one. 🤣

I had the strangest critique from a coworker the other day.

My coding style is apparently "frontend-heavy"

I'm... a front-end software developer? So yes? That's kind of both the intent and the requirement?

I'm trying to figure that one out.
