I’ve been thinking about the PS1 game ‘Driver’ a lot recently. It’s a game I spent a lot of time on during my youth, and whilst I’m sure it doesn’t hold up some 20 years later, it was still a highlight from my ‘gaming youth’....
I would always play AVP2 as an Alien. I loved the mobility of being able to traverse walls and the unique challenges/opportunities it presented. I played it a lot and got quite good at it (would easily be the top player in most games I played), but would more often focus on making use of those unique mechanics for novelty situations.
One map (the forge, or something similar) had high ceilings with ridges built in to it, perfect for hiding an Alien. Instead of running around the map tearing up victims and moving up the leaderboard, I would cling up on that ceiling and wait for an unsuspecting human to pass underneath. I would drop down like a spider, paralyze them with my tail, and immediately headbite them. The glee that I would get from perfectly executing that surpassed any MVP received from high scores. It was fun to just play an Alien like an Alien.
From my understanding: I get that for honeybees, they need the nectar to make honey (their energy food source) and the pollen is an additional, essential food source for them which contains protein. They collect both nectar and pollen from flowers. For other pollinators like wasps, they don’t make honey but they still need to...
This is funny, and really speaks to a fundamental issue we have during education as to assigning agency for what amount to"random" events.
OP is presumably educated and intelligent, and the takeaway they had was that bees “are pollinators” which is true with regard to our interest in them, but definitely implies agency that they are intentionally pollinating, which (I am pretty sure) isn’t true.
It feels like the same question that gets asked in a million different ways of “why did XYZ evolve that way when ABCD?” (Because evolution is random and tends toward selecting for energy conservation. Not to “achieve” some specific goal.)
Conservatism is a global infestation of hatred, bigotry and oppression. Nothing good in human history has ever come from conservatism. I hope Malaysians will someday be able to cure themselves of this disease.
Voters in Ohio went to the polls to decide whether to approve a measure known as Issue 1 that would raise the bar for constitutional amendments on the ballot. In the ultimate irony, the vote against changing the amendment process exceeded the 60% supermajority that the special election was seeking to require in the first...
Yay! Proud to say I was a part of this as were my wife and daughter! We all voted early on Saturday. Huge kudos to the MASSIVE turnout to shoot this down, sometimes you can be alright fellow ohioans.
Something needs to happen to clue in the average person about why this is such a problem. I don't know what that something is though. Continued breaches of privacy? The government and police continuing to make obvious use of the data they can easily buy from any of these companies? What is it going to take for people to care and for laws to be made to prevent more of this going forward?
I was talking to my insurance company the other day and they warned me that if I make any changes to my policy they'll drastically jack up my rate because of the changes in the economy. But I can bring it down a bit if I install their tracking software on my phone that can interface with my vehicle and send all of my driving data to them. It would tell them everywhere I ever go whenever I drive, my exact speed at any moment, braking habits, etc. Does anyone ever say yes to this? Do people realize that they could sift through everything you've ever done effortlessly with AI to find that one time in your life you came to a rolling stop at a deserted stop sign and claim you're a dangerous driver who doesn't follow the rules of the road in order to deny your claim?
Is there a chance in hell that one day this won't be a requirement just to have vehicle insurance? Why isn't everyone up in arms about their data being harvested and sold to the highest bidder? Why are there not laws being made against this kind of undemocratic, authoritarian control over people? I am so disappointed in my fellow man, both the ones guilty of the harvesting and everyone who couldn't be bothered to complain and put a stop to this.

There are a lot of GOP-controller legislatures in the USA pushing through so-called “child protection” laws, but there’s a toll in the form of impacting people’s rights and data privacy. Most of these bills involve requiring adults to upload a copy of their photo ID.
It is still very shocking to us in Europe that the United States wants to control pornography before guns. I don’t know many people who have killed themselves by masturbating.
In the UK, The Online Safety Bill is almost about to become law. Without going into the full details, the government basically wants to monitor everyone’s messages to stop child pornography and protect people (and other stuff too).
The problem is, they want companies to scan messages and photos as they are uploaded and to give themselves backdoor access to E2E encryption services.
It’s very likely the UK will lose access to iMessage, Signal, WhatsApp etc as they would rather withdraw their services from the UK than break their promise to their users.
The Disrupt Burrup Hub is a direct-action campaign that targets Woodside and other polluters operating at Murujuga on the Burrup Peninsula in North West Western Australia[2]. The campaign aims to bring attention to and oppose Woodside’s Burrup Hub mega-project, which is seen as a disaster for both the climate and the local culture[1]. Woodside plans to expand its Burrup Gas Hub and release billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere[3]. The campaign involves various forms of protest and activism, including forcing the evacuation of Woodside’s headquarters by releasing non-toxic, non-flammable stench gas[4]. Activists are concerned about the destruction of sacred rock and the ongoing development of the Burrup Peninsula[5]. Woodside has threatened to sue the protesters for financial loss[6]. The Disrupt Burrup Hub campaign is part of a larger movement to protect the environment and fight against climate change.

The shift from “You have nothing to hide if you aren’t doing anything illegal” to “It is illegal to criticize us. We will keep an eye on you to make sure you don’t.” can happen a lot faster than people want to realize.
Let’s flip it. Why do people want data on you? why are people willing to pay for it? or governments deploy threats of fines (backed up by men with guns) or men with guns in order to force it’s collection on you?
private companies feel like they can make money with it, that they can make you do things that are profitable (buy something you wouldn’t, vote a certain way, decide against insuring you etc). Are you cleverer than teams of academics? I’m not.
Governments want it to enhance control. Sometimes that control can be benevolent but it’s still control. Often it’s not benevolent, selective enforcement of unjust laws against political opponents etc.
maybe regulate some of the most destructive corporations. maybe militarize the protection of rainforests and stop deforestation. maybe stop intervening in countries governments when they’re trying to stop global capitalists from taking their land and stripping it for profit. maybe develop infrastructure for efficient mode of travel. maybe promote localized food production and fund those projects instead of war. so many solutions people have been fighting for for centuries, meanwhile politicians and wealthy elite just greenwash everything while they plunder the world for resources and power to sell. they’ve sold our future and have refused to heed decades old warnings because its not good for their bottom line. maybe total destruction is the only solution, because i do not have faith in the governments to actually enforce anything to actually address the issues. they will gaslight the general population and forget to tell us that the top 1% are responsible for over 50% of the total global emissions.
