Devi,

You realise thats a punishment?

Devi,

Socialisation is the most important thing you'll do with a dog, even if they're an adult you need to get them used to as many things as possible so they can live a calm life.

Learn dog body language, so many people get into issues because they can't tell their dog is stressed, or in pain, This is my favourite guide, but you can also learn for free online.

If you're causing your dog pain then you're not training their minds and setting you both up for failure. Find a different way to get what you want.

Most issues people have with their dog is because they're not getting the correct physical or mental exercise.

Understand the breed you have as it will teach you how to make your dog comfortable.

Devi,

A punishment is something unpleasant that creates the reaction you want. You're saying you're causing discomfort to your dogs neck in order to make them sit, that is by definition a punishment.

Devi,

You will find a more reliable sit by leading a dog into it rather than trying to move their body for them. The dog needs to move its own body in order for the movement and the word to join together in their brain.

Think about your own learning, is it better for you to learn a task by someone guiding your hands into position or is it better for them to model a behaviour and you to do it yourself? Which method means that you'll remember tomorrow, next week, next month, etc?

Devi,

Absolutely. Plus we forget that dogs can be dangerous, I work in rescue and a lot of people will say a dog has "bit me out of nowhere!"

I can think of one dog that genuinely bit out of nowhere, and he had a health concern, all other dogs warn you a thousand times but the owner just hasn't understood what their dog is saying.

Devi,

You absolutely don't. These are both awful ways to teach a behaviour.

This is a nice simple guide on how to train a sit - https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/how-to-teach-your-dog-to-sit/

Devi,

But we can say that with any suicide, if a guy stands on a bridge holding a rock tied to his leg then we will still try to save them because we understand they're going through something.

Devi,

There's thousands of cases of people putting themselves in danger to try to save suicidal people, including jumping into deep bodies of water.

However, my point was on intention, someone committing suicide isn't right in the head so to say "well they did it on purpose so we shouldn't help" is silly.

Devi,

But again anyway, it’s also silly to assume they’re not right in the head.

Sane people don't try to kill themselves

Devi,

Depression is by definition a mental illness.

Devi,

Probably not what you mean but blatant misogyny, hatred, or animal or human abuse, I find those painful to read

Because only women are worried about becoming step-parents? (This prolly could've been an Ask Lemmy.) (lemmy.world)

I’m looking for some good reading on how to, eventually, best help be a step parent to my partner’s children and NEARLY ALL books are geared toward the woman’s perspective as though men don’t want to be a strong teacher and develop these kids into healthy adults. Ugh!...

Devi,

It's pretty standard in divorces to agree custody as part of the divorce, most custody cases are just "This is what we've decided to do", "cool, here's a paper that says that".

Devi,

While I agree cheap chocolate is rough, some store brand chocolate is really nice.

Devi,

I have an idea right, instead of like, treating mental illness, how about we all claim it doesn't exist, that way nobody has it and we'll all be fine!!

Devi,

Parents used to teach, if you read in the dark (on paper, not on a screen, I must add), you’re ruining your eyes. But if you think about it: wtf does low light do to your eyes? By that logic, you’re constantly ruining your eyes while sleeping.

The theory is that frequently straining your eyes is an issue, so reading in conditions that are difficult to see in will weaken them, not that dark itself hurts your eyes.

Devi,

So true. I do a bit of teaching and kids have recently lost all computer skills I thought was basic.

"Where's my work gone?"

"Where did you save it?"

"What do you mean?"

"At the end of last lesson, show me exactly what you did"

"I clicked the X here, then clicked ok"

He clicked OK to the "do you want to close this document without saving?" box. He is 19. I had to give a really detailed lesson on how to save something to not only him, but half the students I taught this year.

Devi,

I think you've misunderstood the comment you replied to. You're agreeing.

Devi,

I did IT support at one point, when they have an issue but don't know what the box said you know you're having a bad time!

Devi,

Smokers getting better chances at promotion because they smoked with the bosses was standard when I started working.

Devi,

"It's great you've found a way that works for you, I do it a little differently which works great for me", smile and leave.

Devi,

Bonus points for his fans shouting about how he wasn't convicted so "He was totally cleared of all that, they're just jealous psychos!"

Because everyone knows sexual assault is notoriously well dealt with.

Devi,

If 35 different people say they were sexually assaulted by someone then the chances that all of them are untrue is miniscule.

Devi,

True. I have a lot of friends who dated abusers AFTER they abused someone else, and parrotted the "his ex was a psycho and made it all up" line.

Sometimes the ex is a psycho, but like 99% of the time they aren't.

Devi,

I had some good news and wanted to see my good friend to celebrate but she was going through some shit and broke, so I said I'd lend her some cash so that she could come to a gig with me.

She turned up, I gave her the money, AND bought the first round. Before she'd finished her first drink she said she felt unwell and wanted to go home, fine, shitty but fine, no bands had even come on yet but shit happens, I took her home and went home myself.

Then the next day I found out it was all a scam, she'd just wanted the money to buy drugs. She never had any intention to stay and she left when she did as she'd pre booked her dealer.

Devi,

Nobody really does physical banking any more so the banks are closing their physical branches. There's a lot of backlash because a few people can't use online banking, it's difficult because the numbers are small and it's hard to justify staffing a full building when 5 customers turn up each day.

It's not brexit related.
