@Ignacio@kbin.social

Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

America is a continent and Americans are people from that continent (Canadians, Usonians, Mexicans, Cubans, Argentinians, Brazilians...)

OC Some ramblings about the future

Tbh, this has been on my mind for the past two days, so I hope you guys don't mind if I unload it here. I tend to obsess and I figure if no one cares, then at least I can get it out of my head instead of thinking about it all the time. Also sorry for the length, I promise I have a doctor's note....

I think that reddit, with its karma system, wanted to become the next influencer-like site, same thing Instagram, Youtube and Twitter did with their followers/subscribers/etc.

Yes, upvotes and downvotes also exist here, but the fact that karma doesn't exist, the only important thing is not the ego "I'm the biggest karma farmer here and you all are filthy peasants", but the content itself.

I absolutely agree with everything you wrote. But changing our mindset doesn't occur in matter of days. We need to get rid of our old reddit and other social media traits.

Because their favourite politician is there, because their favourite singer is there, because their favourite football player is there...

Don't tell people "it's easy", and six more things KBin, Lemmy, and the fediverse can learn from Mastodon (privacy.thenexus.today)

The fediverse has always grown in waves and we're at the start of one. It's worth looking at what tactics worked well in the past, to use them again or adapt them and build on them. It's also valuable to look at what went wrong or didn't work out as well in the past, to see if there are ways to do better....

Good reading, and lots of challenges. But nothing is impossible.

I’ve been aware of Lemmy for a long time, but I’ve always been somewhat wary of it because it’s developed by tankies, and its flagship server (lemmy.ml) has a history of tolerating/encouraging tankie politics.... There’s just no way I could feel comfortable in a community that supports the right-wing nationalist Putin’s war on Ukraine, or outright denies the harsh repression meted out against Muslims in China. I’m far from the only one leery of Lemmy for this reason – the FediTips Mastodon account doesn’t recommend it , either.

Source.

And I agree. My position is very clear since Russia started its invasion in Ukraine. Not last year, but since 2014. Everywhere I hanged out, like the bird site, the zuck site or the snoo site, I didn't have any trouble defending and stating my position, besides the typical lonely tankie who often appeared.

And when I joined the fediverse for the first time... tankies, tankies everywhere. Obviously that was in one single Mastodon instance, but that experience was not positive for me. And luckily, the instance I'm in is more supportive and doesn't tolerate tankies. Same thing with sopuli, a Lemmy instance, where I can see posts about Ukrainian advances and success, or posts against Chinese government.

The more users, the more balanced the fediverse will be, but as that post says, there is still a lot to do against Muslim discrimination, etc.

Another option is to upload images to pixelfed and copy the link here.

Reddit is not very well known in my country (Spain). So no, as far as I know.

Open-source makes it hard for us to develop some features "in the clear" (like our recent video launch) without leaking our plans too far in advance. As Reddit is now a larger player on the web, it is hard for us to be strategic in our planning when everyone can see what code we are committing.

No shit, Sherlock. By that logic, GNU/Linux should also be closed source, in case Microsoft or Apple see leaks of its plans too far in advance. Logic not found.

Because of the above, our internal development, production and “feature” branches have been moving further and further from the “canonical” state of the open source repository. Such balkanization means that merges are getting increasingly difficult, especially as the company grows and more developers are touching the code more frequently.

In other words, you're too lazy to maintain the code, so you make it private to work less. Or you just are very incompetent.

We are actively moving away from the “monolithic” version of reddit that works using only the original repository. As we move towards a more service-oriented architecture, Reddit is being divided into many smaller repositories that are under active development. There’s no longer a “fire and forget” version of Reddit available, which means that a 3rd party trying to run a functional Reddit install is finding it more and more difficult to do so.

No further comments, your honor.

How many users here do you think are going to get bored and end up back on Reddit as soon as the blackout ends?

I don't mean to be pessimistic, bit since most subreddits are only going dark for a couple days, the site will basically be back to normal soon. I wonder how many users here are only here because of temporary outrage and not because they actually prefer Lemmy. I'm curious about people's outlook on this situation.

I joined the fediverse in April last year (mainly Mastodon). I was active most of the time, but at some point I stopped accessing it. But keep in mind that my boredom had to do with my undiagnosed ADHD at that moment, not because Mastodon or Lemmy sucked. After being diagnosed and with a proper treatment, I restarted my fediverse activity a couple of months ago, and here I am.

This man also published a really good book to understand ADHD, both for people suffering and for people surrounding, which is called "Taking Charge of Adult ADHD".

So, a communist is defending a fascist regime. What?

Kbin is not federated with lemmygrad, luckily. In fact, I think that lemmygrad only federates with lemmy.ml. I've my concerns regarding lemmy.ml because of what fedi.tips said on Mastodon, but so far I don't see anything odd. Although I prefer Kbin, to be honest, or other Lemmy instances.

Ignacio,

Any extremism is bad, but yes, tankies were very outnumbered when I joined the fediverse last year. As more people joins, it'll be more balanced and rich.

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

I like politics, but I don't like talking about politics or being surrounded by politics 24/7. I prefer other stuff, like videos about cats or memes or anything else.

Prigozhin should fix the windows of his house, just in case.

Hacking oriented to do good. Great for him, but maybe he should leave some coins in those wallets to buy some Kleenex and dry tears LOL.

If there is a community/magazine in the instance I belong to, I join that community/magazine. Otherwise, I join one at random, usually the first one on the list.

Don't hesitate to correct my grammar, prepositions are not my best knowledge.

I put together a guide aimed at Redditors for Kbin and Lemmy! (beehaw.org)

I want to preface, if you see a mistake in the image or have something helpful to add, go right ahead! I still have the layered files for this, so edits can be made very quickly. I chose to handwrite the text to avoid font copyright infringement....

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

The only exception is when one instance is not federated with the others. Like lemmygrad.ml, for example.

Some people must be very far away from public positions, forever.
