As the fedi grows, I'm seeing a lot of identical links posted in several different places; instances and communities on the same instances.

@shepherd Yeah I'm not sure of an appropriate solution either.

These may not even need to be merged, but maybe there is a way to just display one thread and link all identical links as a "cross-post" within the thread? That way we're just seeing a single aggregated link without a bunch of spam? Something like this:

@shepherd I fear that is easier said than done. I frequent /ALL most of the time, and new communities pop up pretty consistently. Unsubscribing from a seeming endless torrent of new instances and communities is tedious and probably futile in the long run. It would at least require a lot of constant curating to keep up with it.

If we were to aggregate identical links into a single thread with hyperlinks to the crossposts - it would allow much the same functionality without requiring each user to manually exclude large parts of the fedi.

@Falmarri Right, it would tremendously cut down on porn spam too if all the same links aggregated to a single thread as well.

Let me preface this comment with: I haven't written code in decades, so I'm not sure what is or is not possible. 😆

That being said, you're probably right about different links to the same content on different sites - but I don't understand why the same link from different users can't be flagged as the same content and aggregated as well?

I understand there is only so much that can be done on the backend to curb spam, the rest would likely have to be controlled through moderation. Maybe when significant events happen we can have moderators pin a "megathread" like /r/politics does where dozens of sites are running the same story?

@shepherd

@Mallard

Yeah, that's a great idea. It might also allow for future moderation to add stragglers into the same post even like a reddit megathread.

This is SO much better than the default thread view, I love it. Thank you!

One tiny nitpick though, is there any way I can add back in the small padding between user comments to keep each comment chain separate? Right now it looks like one big comment chain.

Thanks! I'll subscribe after it syncs over the fedi and I can access it through kbin.

McBinary,

I've seen this through kbin as well. I can view far fewer posts through kbin than I can see from their home instance. I haven't figured out why yet.

I've only interacted with Lemmy a few times from a PC, but I can definitely say it looks better your way. I found the webUI frustrating - but it's still in its infantile stage so I can't fault the devs.

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

This is pretty funny, but I still think it would piss investors off more if there was just a mass influx of gay porn without nsfw tags in every sub after the mod tools break. Hard to get advertisers that way. 🤷

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

That looks like it took forever to do!
They look very nice though, just time consuming.

Toss a great rune and an erdtree in the background and this would be indiscernible from an elden ring render.

It's interesting that this story is being picked up by business news sites now. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it's at least catching the business world's attention.

French scramble should really just be called "butter, with egg". 🤢

@zekiz the most significant impact will happen at the end of the month when the 3rd party tools that have been running the place quit working.

McBinary,

@Otome I sure hope this is satire, that's some pretty unhinged mental gymnastics otherwise...

The article reads of someone trying to bend reality to make sense of
their own sexual abuse.

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

I don't know how it should change, but definitely needs to. I don't understand why posts have kbin.social directly after the title, when the post is actually on lemmy.world for example. The only way I know I'm replying to a lemmy post on their instance is by checking the top bar...

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

That's pretty neat, but I feel like it's a huge waste of water.

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

Well, that was incredible! I wish I were this good at literally anything.

Ad revenue. I'd rather give money directly to my instance owner.

What has happened to the nsfw content from Lemmy? It no long shows up in my feed; all or subscribed.

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

@Otome If I view this link on mobile or pc, I see everything that is posted there - but I do not see any of that in my All or Subscribed feed "frontpage" anymore. I'm subscribed to several communities on lemmynsfw that should be showing in my feed but are not there.
