tl;dr: after pushing rcs so hard for years, killing hangouts well after forgetting about it, & hiding it from gmail, google now wants you to use its (and google allo's) successor, google chat.
I always used to use Hangouts as my default chat app for friends. We had a big DnD group chat on it. But we migrated to WhatsApp when Google said they were going to kill hangouts and never looked back.
Why would I trust Google with my chats when they constantly abandon/kill off their best tools. We've now moved to Signal and I'm expecting to stay there for a long time.
Looking at Fedidb.org the Fediverse Network Statistics, I'm seeing about 98,000 Active users as of the 27th. That's at least 50k new users this month. Welcome to Lemmy, fellow migrants!
postmarketOS has posted to their Mastodon: "So Reddit has sent us this nice "either you open up your subreddit or else" letter too. We will keep the subreddit private, let's see what their "next steps" look like.".....
This one is something that were brought up a lot by developers including me who are very weary about corporations profiting off of our work for free and this basically put us off from contributing to open source in general....
A lot of us come from reddit, so we're naturally inclined to want a reddit-like platform. However, it occurred to me that the reddit format makes little sense for the fediverse....
I've been seeing a lot of pro-reddit, anti-mod comments, despite tens of thousands of up votes on Reddit blackout posts. Pro-reddit comments also have a ton of gold for some reason....
The https://kbin.social server is now federating with the Fediverse. You can follow/interact with kbin.social magazines & users from other Kbin servers, Mastodon & rest of the Fediverse. For example the TIL magazine is at @TodayILearned, the lead dev of Kbin is at @ernest
There's a new Kbin server at https://readit.buzz which is run by the same people as the Universodon.com Mastodon server. It's open for signups, just click "log in" and then "register".
This is the kind of transparent communication that buys so much goodwill and trust from the community. I've been enjoying my first experience in the Fediverse with Kbin, and the response here only makes me love it that much more. Nicely handled.
Agreed. I had already created an account on a Lemmy instance (Lemmy.one since I wanted to avoid the two main .ml instances). I had just about settled but decided to give Kbin a try. While it doesn't seem quite as far along in it's development, it struck me as a better user experience. Combined with reservations I have about the Lemmy developers... Well, here we are. And seeing this level of involvement and dedication to doing the right thing from the developer confirms that choice. Kudos @ernest
Google reminds us that Google Chat can be used with friends and family (9to5google.com)

Since Kbin is new basically anyone here now would be considered veterans in a few years.
Just something a recently thought of.
Don't you think kbin has really gone downhill since the good old days?
I don't actually think that, but wanted to be the first to complain about it.
Ex Redditors on July 1st trying to register new accounts on overloaded servers (lemmy.world)
Lemmy & Kbin reaching 100k active users within days. (fedidb.org)

Who knew this technology existed?
Reddit activated a word filter that whenever you say "fuck spez", your comment won't show up for anyone else. I just tested it on ModCoord. they're also deleting spez memes from the subs they nuked lol
r/ModCoord: The admins in charge of demodded subreddits are mass-removing images of Huffman previously shared on them...
How do we call kbin users?
Kbinners? Binnies? Kbinators?
[Discussion] I don't think this format makes a lot of sense for the fediverse

Why everyone is switching to NixOS ?
Hi everyone!...

Anti-mod brigading going on within reddit?

Hey guys, this time I really messed up :/
I think you should see something....
Isn't it ironic.... that we all left reddit because 3rd party apps were being killed off, and came to a place where there are no 3rd party apps.
edited to meet rule #3!
