Not a huge surprise there is a large anti-capitalist faction on lemmy, so this isn't terribly surprising.
I'm no meta apologist, they've done enough to warrant skepticism. The reality is they can harvest the data even if you defederate their main instance, by setting up shadow instances or just scraping other instances, so that argument doesn't really hold water for defederation. The bigger one is content vs spam coming from their instances and possible EEE measures, but immediate defederation only serves to keep them siloed off and does not let them function as an offramp to better instances for regular users.
Over reliance on algorithms has degraded the user experience to the point that the average user is drowning in ragebait and extremist politics, because they drive up engagement. Just like a toddler, algorithms don’t discriminate between good and bad attention, so everything that gets clicks is thrust forward. Now, you could...
It's always been cool, but a lot of people gave it up due to lack of good quality tools and content sites actively working against it. Glad to see the community is still alive and trying to get back to it.
I hadn't heard that stag from Twitter, but I really do hope that is how it is on reddit and that the content generating users have begin making the switch. Sadly, I think some of reddit recent rise in popularity attracted some folks there only for views so they'll probably stay. Hopefully their content isn't much to miss.
I tried to make it fairly realistic. Obviously I would like HSR absolutely everywhere, but a line through middle of nowhere Montana probably would not see much ridership and would come at extreme cost (especially in the mountains).
The existing highline route, Amtrak Empire Builder, goes through north dekoda, Montana, Idaho, and Washington and it is a very heavily used route, so I'm not sure that wouldn't get usage if it existed.
The difference is here you can manage your own feed and pick and choose. Many folks don't want metas apps on their device but wouldn't mind some of the content. Folks that don't want it don't have to sub but those that do can benefit second hand.

While the 97% accuracy rate isn't anywhere enar good enough, the simple fact remains that it's just not worth the privacy risk. The idea of this becoming mandatory, at the TSAs own direction is completely horrifying. If elected officials legislated such a thing, at least we have some possible recourse. As it is, we have no recourse against the TSAs director.
Industrially processed pizzas, cereals, and convenience foods are responsible for a host of diseases. Policymakers and doctors need to lead the food fight.
If that's true, then the issue isn't that processed foods are bad on their own, but a side effect of the processing is that they are easier to overeat on. That's a very different issue that what type of food is being eaten. It's possible to overeat on grilled chicken and vegetables, it's just that it's harder to do.
What about riced cauliflower? The issue is the type of processing, but I'd submit that is a distractio to the bigger issue. The problem is that the processing often results in foods that are easier and tastier to eat, resulting in over consumption.
Couldn't agree more. The processing is a distraction. Good food can be heavily processed and bad food can lightly processed. The issue is that the processing of food makes some foods easier for overconsumption. That's not an issue than can be legislated at the root cause and anything else will have unintended side effects.
This is by design. They've got us arguing about the api price, when their goal was to kill off third party apps and get all users on their app so they can data mine us. And the ridiculous api price is a secondary bonus for them, since AI and LLM companies will gladly pay it to sick up the content on the platform.
I basically want to to see microblogging and threading server projects on the fedi merge. Am I alone here? I think every non creator wants all this functionality. Then there would also be projects with these capacities but dedicated to writing articles or podcasting or hosting video or running a musical artist's website etc. But every user wants to be able to post short messages, boost them, like them, view/comment on them in a reddit -ish interface. obviously we need apps to help with this too.

If the majority of the Fediverse is going to defederate from Meta Threads, does that mean we will defederate from Tumblr too?
