If you like international and eclectic news, come and join me at @worldwithoutus (Link for Lemmy = worldwithoutus).

I've also started helping out at @worldnews, (Link for Lemmy = worldnews), @movies, (Lemmy = movies), and am a ghost at @13thfloor (Lemmy = 13th Floor).

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

Well it's like the old joke says,

Q: how do you know someone's a vegan?

A: OH, THEY'LL TELL YOU.

Seriously tho I don't have a problem with them unless they start saying there's no difference betwern killing an animal and torturing it.

Haiti accumulated massive debt to European countries by 1914,

Weird way of putting it.

Haiti had massive debt thrust upon it by France's insistance that Haitians pay the French reparations for refusing to be their plantation slaves any longer.

Are they the instance with all the "moe" communities? I always block those. Didn't realize it was just one instance.

livus,

I have the same attitude as you but have only blocked about 40.

Blocked some instances though and I have ticked hide nsfw so I don't need to block individual porn communities.

It just makes me think the person has been watching too much television from the US or UK.

Went to look for the first time in a while...didn't even take me 10 minutes to find an obvious bot. (www.reddit.com)

All it does is respond to the title. sometimes that works out for it…sometimes its horrible. Just a tiny bit down, check the old school cool. down in the comment graveyard is another number name one doing the exact same thing.

I wonder if there are already hybrids that steal and rephrase other comments using GenAI i

Have to be. There were rephrase bots before LLMs even, they just changed a few key words like "argument" would become "fight".

Whoever made them would definitely think of this.

This. Also I'm pretty sure they were trained on the turnitin.com corpus so they waffle a lot. They're incapable of making a point without sounding like someone who loves the sound of their own voice.

Thanks, beautiful photo.

I'd forgotten how Metal the cicadas look over there.

Ours all just look like this so pictures like yours look like some kind of Undead version or something to me, with its crazy red eyes.

That one looks a lot more normal but... why does it look like I can see the tree through its head???

livus,

Heh. Most English-speaking countries spell cheque this way.

Nice one!

Ha ha ha no.

You're probably thinking about the time he had a disagreement with the Chief Rabbi. That got resolved.

His conservative opponent in the mayoral race tried to parlay that into a thing though.

Okay you got me. I finally gave SCMP a click. But it was worth it!

Hopes of Gaza ceasefire rise as Hamas delegation arrives in Cairo (www.theguardian.com)

Egyptian and US mediators have reported signs of compromise in recent days and Egyptian state news channel Al-Qahera said on Saturday that a consensus had been reached in the indirect talks over many of the disputed points but gave no further details. However, many analysts remain pessimistic after five months of stop-start...

That's true of March, but if you look at the big picture the US always vetos on the side of Israel's political interests (until the most recent one, which Israel didn't obey anyway). This was going on long before the current genocide.

The US has recently been trying to lobby the ICC on behalf of Israel (neither country are member states). Its support is a big part of why we can't just step in and start enforcing international law eg the Geneva Conventions.

livus,

let us not forget

I was specifically explaining to that person why the international community is not able to intervene via the UN.

Hamas leadership is shitty too, I agree, but in factual terms it simply lacks the power to singlehandedly prevent an international intervention.

UK: Conservatives crushed by ‘worst local election result’ in years (www.theguardian.com)

Spread of Tory losses leads former minister to say there’s ‘no such thing as a safe seat any more’. The Conservatives are facing one of their worst local election results in 40 years, with striking Labour gains across England and Wales in key battlegrounds they need to secure victory at the general election....

Yeah I want the same thing for NZ too.

Worth noting that for the UN to declare famine:

  • at least 20% of the adults have to be experiencing severe hunger and

  • at least 30% of the children have muscle wasting and/or stunted growth.

What Killed The Movie Trailer? (www.youtube.com)

Movie Trailers may have started out as a tool to sell films, but over time they have evolved into their own spectacle. Before a film is released there are a multitude of Theatrical Trailers, TV Spots, Web Shorts, and even Trailers before the Trailer starts. How did Hollywood turn from a simple marketing tool, to a an ever...

I don't think it really started until the 1980s? OPs video seems to suggest that.

Take a look at this old trailer, there's no way you would guess the plot from that.

livus,
livus avatar

I haven't seen either of those and the trailers look fantastic.

Thanks for the apology, it's all good. Glad I can stop avoiding replying to you in my threads.

I am really bad at not backspacing over the pre-populated tag though. Doesn't help that I interact a fair bit with people from Mastodon on here and they tend to use it. Also kbin thread displays can be confusing so the tags help me keep track of the conversation in big threads.

So, yeah I'll try to not tag you but if I ever do start annoying you, do block me.
