So, what's going on with all this #RedditMigration #Lemmy #kbin stuff?

Short version. Reddit is a mess. Users are fleeing to the #Fediverse.

There are two Fedi #Reddit alternatives you can join, Lemmy and kbin.

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

New migrants please be patient. This is a lot like Nov 2022. It will be choppy, but get sorted out. This is another golden opportunity to break down corporate social media.

cbt,

@mastodonmigration maybe give people a warning about Lemmy though

qprimed,

@cbt @mastodonmigration warn about what? Lemmy the network (with which kbin and mastodon both interact)? Lemmy the software stack? or a particular Lemmy instance (like lemmygrad, which may be more extreme than ppl might expect)? we should strive to be specific here so that misinformation does not run wild.

Tldr; no vague accusations. The 2 developers have a history of antisemitism, pro russia, denying the genocide of the uighurs and historic massacres in china as western propaganda, calling Jens Stoltenberg and NATO nazi, devs using their influence, not doing anything about giant dogpiling of people etc.

I wouldnt feel comfortable sending people to this as an introduction to the fediverse.

qprimed,

@cbt @mastodonmigration again, use/suggest an instance unrelated to the devs. if you have reason, fork the project and make the changes you want. it would be best (but human nature makes that difficult - I know) for everyone to separate the devs from the code and the network. everyone has the right to run an instance as they see fit and suffer whatever consequence as a result. the software and the network itself remain a useful and vitally important tool.

cbt,

@qprimed @mastodonmigration it makes no sense, just go to the projects that don't have all its momentum and infrstructure around 2 tankies. There are like 5 other reddit-style projects doing a better job

qprimed,

@cbt @mastodonmigration I agree. choices are made for many personal reasons, but "warning about Lemmy" is nebulous and (IMHO) unhelpful to those making a choice. Lemmy (the software stack) is the most mature, aggregator style project right now and serves a useful function. the devs appear to have kept their personal beliefs divorced enough from the project (perhaps not their instances) to make it irrelevant to Lemmy (the network). that's all I am trying to point out here.

cbt,

@qprimed @mastodonmigration 'appear'. You haven't even read my receipts that I sent to mastodon migration. Not even the post itself. I smell humbug. Its hard not to think you are not a full blown tankie r now lol

Get out of my sight

qprimed,

@cbt @mastodonmigration I believe I have. they all relate to instances, not the network. defederating Lemmy.ml or lemmygrad.ml or any other instance is a thing. the software stack itself remains solid. if we rejected the agnostic tools of everyone we might disagree with, we would still be living in caves.

cbt,

@qprimed a hard-on for the lemmy project!? Woooow

Just keep it to yourself. Then we can direct new fediverse people to other reddit-like projects that have more longevity. 😝

qprimed,

@cbt you do you, my friend. you do you.

cbt,

@qprimed heheh

and are part of the Fediverse and you can see their content on Mastodon, but you currently get more functionality by creating a kbin or Lemmy account account:

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

Right now there are not many instances for either, but that does not mean the Fediverse can not handle a surge. Yesterday Mastodon's infosec.exchange spun up fedia.io (kbin) and infosec.pub (Lemmy) .

There is every reason to suspect that other established Mastodon instances will jump into the breach to help with #RedditMigration .

We are going to see chaotic and exciting days ahead as the Fediverse once again adds capacity, new users build out content, and developers make rapid fire improvements to their applications. But this is what we do best.

Be patient. You are part of the existential shift from corporate domination to people powered social media.

We got this.

Just learned about lemmy.world https://lemmy.world/signup, from the mastodon.world folks.

If you know of any other open well resourced Lemmy or kbin instances please reply to this post, and will list them here.

@mastodonmigration With the original lemmy devs being hard pro-China regime, and removing anti-China government posts and comments (on lemmy.ml and lemmygrad), be sure you look into who is running any Lemmy instance before you decide to join. I may wait until it's been forked by people without such an agenda. I'm also looking at kbin.

Staying at Reddit any longer isn't even a decision for me know; I've been active from back when it started, but now that's it's being musked I'll be out soon.

jgreen,

@W6KME @mastodonmigration lemmy.world is run by @ruud, and he's doing a great job updating the server and building capacity. He's a trustworthy admin.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@jgreen @W6KME @ruud Absolutely. You can trust this instance for sure!

ruud,
@ruud@mastodon.world avatar

@mastodonmigration @jgreen @W6KME Thanks! I just finished migrating the instance to a dedicated server. More power!

jgreen,

@ruud @mastodonmigration @W6KME I noticed. It's quite a bit more nimble.

tchambers,

@mastodonmigration it is more about Pixelfed and imagery but @dansup did launch:

Fedia.io has gone from zero to abt 16,000 users:

And Kbin.social is now at around 123,000 users:

Rayspekt,

@mastodonmigration What was Nov 2022?

Melon_Cooler,
Melon_Cooler avatar

@Rayspekt Nov 2022 was when there was a large influx of Twitter users to Mastodon after Musk bought the platform. Hundreds of thousands of new users in a short span tends to cause some chaos on the platform

@mastodonmigration

Rayspekt,

@Melon_Cooler Ahh exactly, I remember now. It wasn't that big of a deal personally as I didn't use Twitter nor Mastodon so I forgot about it. Thanks!

@mastodonmigration I apologize for commenting on this as I am not sure if I am supposed to. I am newly migrated, what is the difference between the normal threads and microblogs? Are microblogs not related to any particular magazine and just a kinda chat?

missingno,
missingno avatar

@Malichos @mastodonmigration Microblogs are Twitter-like posts. Part of the beauty of federation is that kbin is fully compatible with Mastodon/Pleroma/Calckey/etc, microblog platforms that don't have reddit-style magazines but can still be interacted with here through our microblog side. kbin will put most federated content under /m/random by default, but magazines can be set up to have associated hashtags so that posts with those tags will get categorized there.

Malichos,
Malichos avatar

@missingno Ah I see! That is pretty neat. I have a lot to learn lol.

@mastodonmigration

infinityto1,

Thanks for answering a question that I had about tags!

@mastodonmigration

I'm trying to understand how the microblog section of kbin works.

I can see this post at https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/microblog. Did you post on kbin directly, or is kbin somehow reflecting the post you made on mastodon?

ie: https://mastodon.social/@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online/110531936808456418

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

@dandan You can see where someone is posting from by hovering over their username. In this case they are posting from @mastodon.online, not @kbin.social like we are. Instead, kbin is pulling in the post from mastodon and letting us see/interact with it.

@mastodonmigration

dandan,
dandan avatar

Thanks, @Otome@kbin.social. If you look at the original mastodon post, I can't see anything referencing kbin.social/m/redditmigration. Do you know how kbin identifies that this mastodon post should show up here?

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

@dandan The original poster used the tag , which the @redditmigration magazine has as one of the tags to automatically pull into the magazine. All mastodon posts should be pulled into kbin as a whole, and then they get sorted into various magazines (or the "random" magazine if they aren't). afaik this is based on the hashtags but there may be some other way it's sorted as well.

@mastodonmigration

lunar2m7,

@Otome@kbin.social From what I understand, not everything from Mastodon/The Fediverse is pulled, that would be impossible, only profiles / tags / groups that are 'called up' by users in the instance.

To close the loop on this, Ernst confirmed that only posts from users that are followed from kbin will appear in the microblog section

@dandan wait so every mastodon user that shows up in various microblog sections of magazines are followed by a kbinaut? that's super interesting if so. I had assumed it was just pulling in tagged content from everyone, not just subscribed users? whereas the general random/all naturally would be only people subscribed to? Interesting that it's just followed users. I guess I'll have to go follow a bunch of people who post content I'm interested in so they populate the magazines haha.

@mastodonmigration @redditmigration @lunar2m7

@Otome@kbin.social

Thats my interpretation of what Ernst said... However from a quick check I just did, while most posts are from people that have a follower, there are some posts from people with no followers.

@mastodonmigration I'm seeing this post on Kbin. If I'm understanding correctly, when people toot about a story from a federated forum site, the conversation is connected through the fediverse? Basically Open Source reddit and twitter talk to each other?

Nepenthe,
Nepenthe avatar

You're correct.

Right now, Kbin's had to put a temporary damper on federation to deal with the sheer amount of traffic while Ernest tries to upgrade everything, otherwise the feed would be way more active than it is, with posts and threads from all over every instance on multiple different platforms.

But that's only temporary and doesn't seem to affect access between here and Mastodon. I did not expect to get a less extremist, longform Twitter as a kbin bonus. I didn't even think something like this was possible, and I adore it

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

@mastodonmigration O7 can confirm, am a reddit user who's finally checking out the fediverse thanks to kbin and this reddit drama. Not sure how this all works yet though. It was super slow last night but this morning it's been better.
