Drusas,

The biggest shrinkflation culprit is food. People need food. Recent trends do, in fact, show that American consumers have been switching to cheaper brands and reducing consumption of some items, but boycotting is unrealistic. People need to eat and a handful of massive corporations own most brands.

right wing politicians are cunts. all of them.

    GregorGizeh,

I mean, some cash is nice but the reason people don’t have kids is

    • a bleak future in the face of a collapsing ecosystem
    • late stage capitalism forcing people to work all day just to be able to afford existing
    • degrading childcare infrastructure amidst missing teachers, preschool educators, daycare workers, etc. And a general social climate hostile to raising children
    • and lastly of course the crippling loneliness epidemic, leaving many people (particularly men) unable to find partners
    Alivrah,

I can’t think of any questions right now because it’s a little bit shocking to see someone openly talking about their pedophilia like this and whle I find it disturbing, I do appreciate the honesty and the willingness to start a conversation on the matter.

While you’re using a throwaway, I’m still somewhat impressed by your courage to do this, and also by everyone else asking legitimate questions.

Incredibly, The Russian Air Force Has Lost Another Rare A-50 Radar Plane (www.forbes.com)

Incredibly, the Russian air force has lost another one of its rare Beriev A-50M/U Mainstay radar early-warning planes. Video that circulated online on Friday reportedly depicts the A-50’s burning wreckage in Krasnodar Krai, in Russia just east of the Sea of Azov....

    cabron_offsets,

Fuck russia. And send the republican traitor filth to fight for their motherland.

US Department of Defense Plots Renewable Energy Takeover (cleantechnica.com)

The Department of Defense is investing in renewable energy with a goal of getting to 100% carbon free electricity for facilities n 14 states. As one of the largest polluters in the world, it is really great to see initiatives to move the military away from carbon polluting energy.

    Dempf,

Yes. Even though the cynical take is easy, I don’t think it’s the right one. The U.S. military, despite its massive contribution to the problem, has been sounding the alarm bells about climate change for quite some time. Framing the conversation in terms of energy independence and strategic liabilities goes a long way towards convincing those outside of the terminally online bubble.

Speaker Mike Johnson faces critical decision on Ukraine aid as international pressure grows to act (www.cnn.com)

Speaker Mike Johnson is facing international criticism over his lack of swift action on Ukraine aid, which is ratcheting up pressure to make a critical decision that will not only have massive implications for his rookie speakership but also for Ukraine’s ongoing war effort against Russia....

    Candelestine,

“no rush” to address the issue

Brave Ukrainians, that didn’t have to, are dying.

I'm not a huge mustard fan, so imagine my surprise when I tried mustard soup in the Netherlands and it was amazing. The mill where they ground the mustard was right next door. It was like a cheese soup almost. Creamy, tart, spicy. So good. All of the Dutch mustard was, including with the bitterballen.

    kapulsa,

Being mindful of ones own actions is good, but saving the planet needs us to target big oil.

Posting and liking memes is great, but real change comes from actions. If you are as concerned as we are about climate change, please consider joining or supporting climate activists near you.

When I tip I prefer to do so in cash so they can just pocket it. When I was a dishwasher I remember the good, hardworking servers walking out every night with huge roll of bills, and they would go buy groceries without paying taxes on it.

It has been a long time but when I waited on tables for $2.xx / hour no one ever told me about any minimum I had to make or the employer would pay more. If that exists it is new and I wonder how common it is. If my tips were shit, I took that hit and got no help from the employer.

I was fortunate to be from a state where minimum wage for tipped persons was the same as everyone. I also kept that rate when I transferred to a state where tipped employees were paid $2.xx / hour. My mistake was moving to a different employer and the lower hourly rate.

A lower hourly rate for tipped employees is pure profiteering bullshit on the part of employers. It should be outlawed at the federal level. There is no good reason for an employer to get in the middle of an employee and customer. Customers tip employees, NOT employers.

    Windex007,

I think in the age of one-liners (Twitter, tik tok, etc) people have gotten so fucking stupid that they have lost their ability to digest a nuanced take. If it takes more than two sentences for a fox news host to say any liberal position is 100% and perfectly undeniably the worst thing in the world, they’re “going woke” (the brain-dead MAGA catch-all for any position they don’t like but can’t actually articulate why). If a liberal merely explains in good faith a right wing position that they’re going to argue against, they’re “enlightened centerists” (the brain dead left wing catch-all for any discussion that isn’t ** immediately** a shrill cry of fascism)

To be extremely clear, Jon is still the smartest guy in the room, and it’s just that you’ve gotten a lot dumber in the last 10 years on your diet of twitter.

That’s fair, but I feel like the point is that many people go through a process where

    1. You pay money
    2. The buttons on your screen say “buy” “purchase” “check-out” or something else to that effect

That feels like buying media, so according to the common “consumer” (hate that word) brain, you are spending money to buy content.

At the same time, media corps have been trying to teach us for years that piracy is exactly the same as stealing.

The whole point of the shorthand is to explain that these are not facts, they’re misconceptions, AND both of these misconceptions exist for the same reason, corporate propaganda.

The trick is being just smart enough to stay silent on topics we know nothing about.

Fox wants Taylor Swift to stay out of politics. Here are the celebrities the network wants involved instead. (www.mediamatters.org)

Fox hosts and guests have spent recent weeks warning Taylor Swift not to get involved in politics, but the network has a history of enlisting D-list celebrities to do just that. Whether discussing inflation with Pauly D or asking Larry the Cable Guy for his election predictions, Fox News and Fox Business have been eager to let...

    givesomefucks,

    Even if Taylor doesn’t say a thing…

Telling her to stay out of it is going to have the same result on the Swifties.

They’d be better off just never saying her name, but conservatives can never keep their mouths shut
