It's funny that the author didn't think to try Music.app instead of doinking about in Finder. I just did this a couple of weeks ago with my own iPod Classic: Music supports iPod sync just fine. (Yes, still!)
Seems like time and time again, Nintendo is always trying to sell games to an audience of people who do not wish to play video games. For a sequel, I figured Nintendo should focus on their core audience of Pikmin fans but it seems like they’re always changing things to appeal to people who don’t play games while in return...
I'm guessing this is because of the å (a with overring)? If so, ⌥+ashould work in any text input field on Mac, and is more broadly useful! You could use it for… angstrom units! And… er… Swedish folk singers?
A lot of Ujico's albums as Snail House are more chill/downtempo, but I love the Alien Pop series. Really creative producer. Here's his Bandcamp for those new to him: https://0101.bandcamp.com
I don't think he's a permanent member of any circle but he also does some clubbier tracks on doujin releases: I've heard him on compilations from Wavforme, Unitone, and Riparia Records.
Starting with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, users with an Apple ID will automatically be assigned a passkey, allowing them to sign into their Apple ID with Face ID or Touch ID instead of their password.
Multigreg writes, I set a screen time restriction with the passcode, without the option to remove it using the Apple ID. I tapped cancel and hit skip. When I try the forgot passcode link, it still guides me through the options to enter my Apple ID or device password or find a forgotten Apple ID…
So the mitigation that we said last time, that specific one about the screen time password, if you did that on your phone, just remove it because it's not actually helping. I mean, I don't know if you want to remove it because it will slow them down. It will slow down the thief a little bit because now they have to go through the forgot password flow, which is kind of annoying. And you know, so it's a speed bump, a tiny speed bump, but that's about it.
AFAIK the best advice we can give people is to set a strong device passcode and never use it in a public space. Always use FaceID, and have "Require Attention" toggled on.
Weirdly torn on this: I live a few hours from the nearest Apple store, so it'd be nice if I could replace my phone battery without going through all this, but I also like the fact my phone is a decently robust and waterproof little brick with few moving parts or breakable pieces. It's practically a tank compared to the last battery-replaceable smartphone I had.
If I had to replace my battery as frequently as I did with early smartphones then I'd willingly trade some of the durability for a user-replaceable battery, but I've had an iPhone 12 mini since its launch – about two and a half years – and its battery still gets me through the day just fine. iOS Battery Health says its maximum capacity is 87%. Maybe next year I'll need a battery replacement, and that'll do me fine for another three years. I'll be extremely pleased, but also quite surprised, if the phone lasts long enough to need a second battery replacement after that. Is that a repair we should really be optimizing for?
When people talk about Zeta's OP, I always have to check whether they mean this one or the original Japanese opening. Replacement international soundtracks usually make me sad, but Saegusa did a great job here. I like them both.
If someone sets up a Kbin/Lemmy community for iOS/macOS beta discussions let me know and I'll add it to the sidebar and pin a sticky for the beta period!
I guess that clinches it. I'm AFK right now but later today I'll be checking out PowerDeleteSuite (thanks to @solidgrue for mentioning it in this thread).
Thanks for the reminder! I saved a bunch of interesting and useful stuff with that interface, I should definitely grab it all before I go.
I'm still conflicted about deleting my accounts tbh. I shared a few useful things on Reddit, and even followed up on questions that I'd later answered for myself. Someone might find it useful, and it seems a shame to take it back just to spite a corporation.
I hope enough interesting people stick around to keep the threadiverse fun.
Kbin's an alpha product. It'd only just been released when Reddit went Hinamizawa on us, and despite the alpha snags it seems to be serving lots of us pretty well already. It's amazing for an open source project to have this much interest and excitement out of the gate, and I hope that continues… maybe not at the same pace, though. ernest needs coffee, but ernest also needs sleep.
This will sound boring but I'm curious about reading books and comics on the Vision Pro. It'd be interesting to experiment with eye tracking and hand gestures for turning pages, setting highlights, and searching through a book with a feature like Kindle's x-ray.
Comics might be tough because the page format conflicts with comfort guidelines (windows should be constrained to 60° horizontally and 30° vertically) but maybe eye tracking could allow you to create a comfortable loupe of that size that naturally pans over the page as you look around.
Interesting, didn't know that was a thing! Given their reasons for choosing Swift, I was curious why he didn't discuss Rust. Later in the video he mentioned they started this project in 2017, which may partly explain it: it was only around that time that Rust really started to get traction, whereas Swift came out of the gate with fanfare and accolades. That also means they started this effort before SwiftUI had been announced.
Their approach to app also seems quite different from the typical promise of Electron, Flutter, or React Native: rather than trying to apply the same UI design and codebase to multiple platforms it sounds like they're trying to use the same toolkit to cut down on context switching but want to approach each platform with the design principles of that platform. That's pretty cool. Some of my biggest frustrations with Electron apps come from things that are missing or implemented differently just because they don't translate well for the Windows versions.
If you're on a Lemmy instance then the best way to add it is to paste the full URL into search while logged in. It won't show up right away, but if you wait a few seconds then it'll appear in the search results. Every now and then it gets stubborn and you have to refresh the search results page to see it.
For me it's been communities like /r/buildapc, /r/buildapcforme, /r/buildapcsales, /r/gamedeals, and /r/consoledeals have been useful throughout the years.
I know you mentioned that you haven't searched yet, so this may not be the only one out there, but fwiw I noticed the other day that someone set up a JRPG community on the kbin.social instance:
An important detail – described well in the article but missing from a lot of online discussion – is that this tool is for game developers to assess the work needed for a proper port. It's not for consumer use.
It's still great news for people who want to play games on Mac because it's such an improvement to the porting process to have this kind of visibility into a game's performance and key issues at the outset.
(Aside: I tweaked the Verge's original title after posting to make the developer focus clearer. It's nice to be able to do that!)
This is the growth of our lemmy instance, without any advertising or spruiking. It was spun up as a test more than anything else, but it seems that it has become more than that!...
I'm really interested to see how this goes: both comparisons setting up and maintaining the two apps, as well as your experience with any eventual transition/consolidation. This kind of trailblazing is so cool.
It's the weekend for me, and I'd just love some suggestions. Movies? TV shows? Coffee? Holiday destinations? Software? Apps? Books? Something new to make for dinner? Websites?...
Uncanny Magazine is a bimonthly indie sci-fi & fantasy magazine: short stories, poetry, and essays. I never know what to expect from its stories. They're often evocative, engaging, and weird, and they make me look at the world in a different way. Don't read it through. It's best savored.
Thanks, this is a really helpful roundup of links – a lot to consider.
This comment is especially interesting. It makes me think kbin should stop translating "upvotes" and "downvotes" into Fediverse concepts, and should instead embrace the Fediverse concepts and present them directly: instead of upvote and downvote buttons we could have 🚀 (boost) and ⭐️ (favorite) buttons, perhaps with a combined score for sorting. It would mean abandoning downvotes, but it sounds like downvotes are a problem anyway.
That would give us a reputation system that makes it clear what you're doing when you boost a post or comment, but also one that won't be jarring to users of other apps and instances.
This comment thread is behaving very strangely right now: comments with the same ID are showing up multiple times in different places, and I just received a notification about a reply that I don't see in the thread.
