The Last Rose of Summer is a true story about corruption in #cancer research. I discovered a cheap, plant-derived drug that could replace some much more toxic (but more lucrative) therapies. #BigPharma got involved and suppressed the research. Eventually I had to publish the story in thinly veiled fiction and survive a bunch of murder attempts.

"Mary Austin" is a pseudonym, as my publisher forced me to use one. So... hi, I'm "Mary." 🤷‍♀️

@RickiTarr Not sure. I've heard the Dark Side has cookies, but does it really?

I'm going with whichever one has cookies.

Gotta wonder how many state governments TurboTax and the like can buy off.

Last night Mr. Laffy, the twins, and I celebrated:

1- May 34th
2- Finding a townhouse to put an offer on …in our preferred complex, exactly where we wanted to buy
3- Being together again, in for realsies
4- The rule of law working as it should

Today I woke up (I actually didn’t sleep much) under the weather… which started yesterday but was trying to ignore. So, no Champagne today.

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

Been thinking a lot about health lately. Not as some thin white lady doing pilates, or some ripped dude who won't shut up about cross-fit.

But like, what does it ACTUALLY mean, and why is it important? Specifically, what would living in a more healthful way look like for me? Where I find myself is in a place that health is divorced from weight.

I don't care about weightloss. The things that bother me about my size are society's problems - not mine.

MaryAustinBooks,
@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch
I have found that people do a lot better when building healthy habits takes priority over weighing a certain number. It's the only way to build health sustainably. What I used to do in pediatric practice-- talking about habits rather than weight or BMI-- wasn't something I ever referred to as Health At Any Size, but that movement takes the same approach.

I'm glad you found a yoga class you like. Everybody can benefit from yoga! I love it.

It had me down as a Democrat as I am extremely hard to gross out. (Med school will do that to you.) But I don't see why all these hypothetical questions when MAGAs are out there literally drinking raw milk with bird flu in it, when they're not drinking pee instead of taking their covid vaccines.

🧵 A small positive of Elon Musk buying Twitter is that he's made it impossible for Donald Trump's Truth Social to succeed.

Traffic at TS has been declining for months despite Trump flooding the site with posts about his high-profile NY criminal trial.

There simply aren't that many far-right political junkies out there. The few that do exist are running amok on Twitter. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/24/truth-social-traffic-trump-media-djt-data.html

TBF at least our same few people are qualified. I agree with all your points, I'm just sitting here marveling that all it takes to be a "rising star" in MAGA is a racist podcast and a name like... er... "Catturd2."

Probably easier to come up with rising stars when pretty much any booger they pull out qualifies.

"Kirk argued in the 1950s that if the American middle class — then under half of Americans — ever grew too large and well paid, then such access to “wealth” would produce a social disaster. His followers warned that under such circumstances minorities would forget their “place” in society, women would demand equality with men, and young people would no longer respect their elders.”

Seeing "The poor are always with us" taken out of context and used to justify exploitation of the poor, what a particularly nauseating twist.

For non-Christians, Christ said this (Mark Ch 14) to defend a woman who humbled herself before him by pouring precious ointment on his head; some condemned her, saying the money for it should have been given to the poor. Jesus was in fact encouraging concern for the poor, but he was saying there was also value in her act of devotion.

MaryAustinBooks,
@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963
The full quote is actually "The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want."

Same kind of "Christian" read the Gospel just as selectively back then as the do today.

Have y'all ever had someone act like you were hurting them somehow by just liking a food?

Any time I buy or make kimchi, my Mom says it's so gross and she doesn't want any and just on and on. I never offer it to her, or make group food with it, but for some reason she seems offended by it, and I don't know why.

MaryAustinBooks,

People really do either love or hate Marmite. I had an English boyfriend who loved it and missed it because he couldn't find it in the States. I thought to myself, we're in a major city, surely someone has it, so I set about to obtain a jar for him. I delighted him with the gift; then, because no good deed goes unpunished, he said, "Oh, you've got to try it!"

I gagged, got the "Well, it's an acquired taste" response, and assured him he could have every last bit.

What a sight, your post providing the answer to the question asked in the title here (which was just above your post in my feed!). I will give Hartmann props for offering racial and gender hatred as one of the reasons. It always amazes me how many white authors spill endless ink on what "explains" an overtly white supremacist movement. "In this Ohio diner..."
