It's film_girl, but on Mastodon. I'm a Senior Developer Advocate at GitHub, a podcaster, a journalist turned developer and someone obsessed with tech, OSS, and pop culture.

So the new Instagram text thing is reported to have ActivityPub support and instead of being happy at all the new labor that could potentially be coming to the standard, Mastodon people are now actively encouraging instances to not federate with any of that stuff. K.

I agree with this fwiw. I think there is a place for both and I’m not leaving Mastodon. But it is objectively true that Bluesky is fun and Mastodon is much less so. Earnestness has a place but lots of us are online to have fun. https://www.wired.com/story/bluesky-is-fun/

Apple added support to macOS and Apple Silicon via its Game Porting Toolkit. It’s basically a 20k patch to Wine that will make it easy to play AAA Windows games on macOS without using a VM. https://github.com/apple/homebrew-apple

Actively pushing against others to adopt your protocol is how you ensure that your protocol won't "win." I'm a firm believer that a decentralized protocol will be the future of social networks/feeds as we know them. I don't know if it is going to be #ActivityPub or #ATProto or something else. But I believe a decentralized protocol will be the future. But the winner will be the one that centralized-acting services adopt. That's a good thing for everyone. It means users have data portability. 🧵

Honestly, bring it. I have 4 cards with AMEX (3 charge, 1 credit) and would be happy to have my Apple Card with them instead of GS. Much better bank, customer service, and benefits. Via @gruber https://www.wsj.com/articles/goldman-is-looking-for-a-way-out-of-its-partnership-with-apple-79849a91

For 9 years and 470 episodes, I’ve been the cohost of a podcast called . It ended this week. The full episode is great https://relay.fm/rocket/470 but I went ahead and clipped my goodbye message. I mean everything I’m saying/crying through here and I thank all of you for listening and supporting us over the years.

Who the fuck is this asshole? Anyone who wants to claim Mastodon is full of zen needs to look at pieces of shit like this guy who crawled into my mentions to make assumptions b/c I happen to like pop culture. I like art a lot too and if you want to get art snob about it, let’s go .

I’ve been very critical of Apple for how they’ve chosen to abide by various government or court-ordered guidelines but I’m sorry Mozilla, I don’t think that this is an unfair burden. Do I wish this rule would be open everywhere? Yes. Do I think it would be good for Apple, longterm? Yes. Do I think Firefox with its budget is incapable of maintaining two iOS versions? No. https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/26/24052067/mozilla-apple-ios-browser-rules-firefox

Ok, I’m sorry. But this is the sort of drama and virtue signaling shit that will doom this place the same way every Linux on the Desktop effort outside of Ubuntu and SteamOS have been doomed. Getting angry b/c of a UX decision designed to help onboard users is what we call gatekeeping.

I’m a huge fan of FediTips so I don’t want to single them out. But this attitude, I’m sorry, it’s why this place doesn’t have any diversity of users. https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110233289512157360

The one thing I do think the AT Protocol is better at than is data portability. Being built-in at the protocol layer so that you don’t have to do the migration shit (which doesn’t bring your posts) is better. It just is. I think ActivityPub has more potential overall for the social web beyond just Twitter clones, but that part of is better.

I agree with @gruber that this is a corporate pissing match, but I also understand not dedicating engineering resources (any of them) to a $3500 dev kit masked as a consumer product (it prob will be a consumer product but it won’t be at launch) at launch. Especially when the company who makes said dev kit has gone out of its way to undermine your business. Apple TV+ isn’t on the Meta Quest, for example, outside of the browser. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-17/watching-netflix-on-apple-vision-pro-you-ll-have-to-use-the-web

I’m very sympathetic to criticism that many of Apple’s policies around the App Store and some of its products are anti-user and anti-developer. Some of them absolutely are. I’m not convinced that that’s something that should be illegal. Otherwise, please explain the existence of Nintendo.

Speaking of essential reading, this from @gruber https://daringfireball.net/2024/01/coming_to_grips_with_apples_seemingly_unshakable_sense_of_app_store_entitlement and this link roundup from @mjtsai https://mjtsai.com/blog/2024/01/18/storekit-purchase-link-entitlement-for-united-states/ are also must-reads. I cannot believe Apple is going to charge a 27% tax so developers can link to their homepage. I’m generally pretty meh on a lot of tech regulation if only b/c I think most government officials are idiots and it often doesn’t actually work. But this sort of move should be illegal. Full stop. It isn’t. But it should be.

Here is my continued discomfort with the Apple Vision Pro and how its announcement/roll-out has gone: In every single way, this is a dev kit, which I think is completely valid and is the proper positioning for a device like this at this stage. But Apple, while somewhat positioning it like a dev kit in terms of price/release/how it can be tried out, continues to market this as a direct to consumer device. You cannot be both, and I cannot stress this enough. You cannot be both.

I’m not mad at the new Apple Music Discovery station -- I'm glad it is here. But legit, isn't this a little late? Like isn't Spotify Discover like 8 years old?

My friend Jeremy (who made the most useful extension for Tumblr back in the day) commented on my tweet about Reddit/Apollo and it was a very good reminder that companies changing the rules on their APIs and fucking over devs is sadly not at all a new story. It’s really easy to want to knee-jerk blame it on Elon — but recall that three previous Twitter regimes (Ev, Dick, Jack) all did shit like this to various extents.

A friend of mine died this week unexpectedly. We hadn’t talked in a while and I felt awkward about texting, but was reminded to reach out two weeks ago. Stupidly (selfishly), I put it off. I will regret the decision of not letting them know how much I cared about them forever. Don’t be like me. Let the people you care about know while you can.

Alright, it looks like is becoming Normie Mastodon, so I’ll have to actually use that account. I’m not leaving this place but I would like a good bridge, which I think already is in the works but does anyone have any details for people that might want to cross post?

I’ve been really bad at social media the last few months for lots of reasons, most mental health related, but is Mastodon stuck in the same idiotic debate about how the shot on iPhone aspect of Monday’s event is problematic and misleading b/c they used said iPhone alongside pro gear? B/c this is truly the dumbest outrage tech thing I’ve seen in months and months. Like it is genuinely insipid and we’re all dumber for even entertaining it.

So I’m doing something insane to save $500 on a new MacBook Pro 14” b/c of Seattle sales tax. I’m taking the train to fucking Portland. Because it’s $70 on the nice train plus maybe $20 in Ubers vs $552 in extra tax. Usually, I let the sales tax thing go but $550 was where I learned the line was for me to instead spend all day on a train.

No, I did not pre-order a Vision Pro. It’s $3899 for the 1TB option, $500 for Apple Care+, then there is 10% tax. So if I don’t get any accessories like a case or battery clip, I’m at $4848 just for the headset. And I haven’t even tried it yet. No thank you. I might have FOMO, but I’m not into throwing that much money towards the unknown.

How can anyone agree with Carl? I agree that TOML is better than YAML. And JSON is a better choice overall. But XML sucks unless it is strictly being used as something you use as a converter. I refuse to write straight XML. https://changelog.social/@gotime/111098085461260473

The Taylor Swift vinyl retails for $46 and is already going for $150+ on eBay and Discogs. This is why we can’t have nice things (heh) and so against the spirit of Record Store Day.
