Apple added support to macOS and Apple Silicon via its Game Porting Toolkit. It’s basically a 20k patch to Wine that will make it easy to play AAA Windows games on macOS without using a VM. https://github.com/apple/homebrew-apple

Absolutely fuck Reddit. @christianselig is amazing and I cannot believe they are slandering him this way. https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/

All of the talk over the last few weeks about startups shipping unfinished hardware reminds me, and not for the first time, what a triumph the #playdate is. The whole @panic crew worked so hard to deliver something that fulfilled expectations and then some against challenges (like a global pandemic and supply chain fiasco) that would have leveled others.

FYI for the few remaining people who pay for Evernote: it’s time to love to Bear or Notion or OneNote (which is excellent and free) or even Apple Notes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36609641

Here is my continued discomfort with the Apple Vision Pro and how its announcement/roll-out has gone: In every single way, this is a dev kit, which I think is completely valid and is the proper positioning for a device like this at this stage. But Apple, while somewhat positioning it like a dev kit in terms of price/release/how it can be tried out, continues to market this as a direct to consumer device. You cannot be both, and I cannot stress this enough. You cannot be both.

Actively pushing against others to adopt your protocol is how you ensure that your protocol won't "win." I'm a firm believer that a decentralized protocol will be the future of social networks/feeds as we know them. I don't know if it is going to be #ActivityPub or #ATProto or something else. But I believe a decentralized protocol will be the future. But the winner will be the one that centralized-acting services adopt. That's a good thing for everyone. It means users have data portability. 🧡

Fuck it, my mentions are going to be garbage anyway. For everyone decrying what Gmail did to email, let me remind you that no major free webmail service supported IMAP before Gmail did in 2007. The reason we all get to enjoy push email on our phones and don't have to pay BlackBerry to get it is b/c of IMAP IDLE, which Google forced everyone else to adopt. EEE often leads to better software for everyone and also usually backfires on the company trying to do the EEE.

Ok, I’m sorry. But this is the sort of drama and virtue signaling shit that will doom this place the same way every Linux on the Desktop effort outside of Ubuntu and SteamOS have been doomed. Getting angry b/c of a UX decision designed to help onboard users is what we call gatekeeping.

I’m a huge fan of FediTips so I don’t want to single them out. But this attitude, I’m sorry, it’s why this place doesn’t have any diversity of users. https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110233289512157360

My long-awaited App Store retrospective is here. Fifteen years on, it's time to look at how we got here and where we go in the future. https://www.inverse.com/tech/apple-app-store-15th-anniversary-past-present-future -- also shout-out to my still-working Scrabble app

I appreciate and respect how many people in the EU have told us Americans how we don’t understand how EU policy works wrt the DMA. And you’re right! When we opine on it, it is rarely with a cultural understanding of how things work there. But similarly, I really would like EU people to understand the US DoJ doesn’t work like the EU. And the cases might have some similarities but are fundamentally completely different in scope, procedure and enforcement.

I wrote about why support and the is the biggest thing to happen to gaming on the in more than 30 years for Inverse! I stad by this -- even if it remains a niche/developer centric tool, the community has already proved that this is a big deal. I hope to see this integrated with Steam for Apple silicon Macs in the fall. https://www.inverse.com/tech/mac-directx-12-game-porting-toolkit-pc-games

I will miss TextMate forever. I will never love any text editor as much as I loved TextMate. It’s that one true love sort of thing, you know? You can’t always keep it but you’ll always pine for it because when it was good, it was perfect. TextMate is the app I have loved most and the app I will miss forever. https://ruby.social/@collin/111032089994534693

There is something terribly ironic about Bluesky crashing due to the influx of users now that Elon has said he's going to remove Block from Twitter/X (which is too stupid to even comment on), when people literally had pitchforks up at Bluesky for not having blocks as a launch feature in private beta (it was added) and there being ongoing drama about the public nature of who you block/are blocked by (b/c the API has to expose it). I love online so much.

A friend of mine died this week unexpectedly. We hadn’t talked in a while and I felt awkward about texting, but was reminded to reach out two weeks ago. Stupidly (selfishly), I put it off. I will regret the decision of not letting them know how much I cared about them forever. Don’t be like me. Let the people you care about know while you can.

My friend Jeremy (who made the most useful extension for Tumblr back in the day) commented on my tweet about Reddit/Apollo and it was a very good reminder that companies changing the rules on their APIs and fucking over devs is sadly not at all a new story. It’s really easy to want to knee-jerk blame it on Elon β€” but recall that three previous Twitter regimes (Ev, Dick, Jack) all did shit like this to various extents.

Watching Linux distros (and yes, it is usually Debian packagers who act the most sanctimonious) shoot themselves in the face and then insult upstream AND the users of a popular package under the delusion that only the distro's self-declared experts are capable of making decisions is always a good reminder as to why you will never be able to waterboard me into using Linux as my primary desktop. Very sorry this is happening Team KeePassXC. https://fosstodon.org/@keepassxc/112417353193348720
