streets in 3 Acts:

Driver stops illegally in bike lane, hits deliverista on e-bike

Cyclists crashes, sits on ground visibly hurt; concerned onlookers call 911

By the time ambulance arrives, deliverista has hobbled back to his bike and zoomed away, more concerned that his delivery gets there on time than his own injury, perhaps even thinking that he'd have gotten into trouble had he talked to ambulance & police.

One of the little joys in life: finding out that the sugar duster is the world's perfect single-serve tea strainer. Dishwasher safe to boot.

Sunday morning, Monday morning, no matter the day or time of day, I have yet to walk/run/bike past the new Wegmans and not see at least one car blocking the bike lane.

@nypd, would be grand to fix this before someone gets killed.

And yes, there are more than these 1 or 2 car-addled shoppers in the store at any one time. Most can somehow figure out how to bring their haul home without breaking the law.

Cheap Chinese EVs are good news for consumers and the planet. They are bad news for shareholders and employees of Western car companies. What to do?

Hint: think subsidies, not tariffs.

This morning's bike ride in to work was...rainy. Windy, too.

Hydrogen! Geoengineering! Fusion! Beavers!

Looks like a good book. But no, beavers won't help avert climate disaster. Getting off fossil fuels will.

Salzburg voted this weekend, and the head of the local Communists brought his baby to the polls—and ended up winning big. Cue the handwringing in conservative Austria about whether it was the right "signal" to send, or just an odd "staging."

A dozen years ago at this point, but here's me at US Treasury. No signal, no staging, just a busy spouse and two parents figuring things out as they go along. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I've always thought this moment would be more momentous. But it was just a text from the contractor this afternoon: "New unit installed and running."

Thus ends the fossil fuel age in our 200-year-old, 7-unit coop. Heat pumps and induction it is. Time to cut the gas line.

A useful rundown of possible climate impacts of 5 major elections this year https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00642-3

TL;DR
Little impact in India, Indonesia, Russia; potentially large impact in EU; US is the big questionmark, though let me stick to my own guns here and point to: https://gwagner.com/trump-climate

Climate After Trump

My latest column just out: https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/trump-election-what-would-it-mean-for-climate-change-by-gernot-wagner-2024-03

In short, he could, would, and already is delaying clean investments – and any such delay is bad. But delaying the inevitable is all he has. Even a Trump victory this November could not halt it.

Or, perhaps more succinct: The revolution is inevitable. Attempts by to stand in its way would amount to little more than another wall that never gets built.

Frightening news on PM2.5 pollution https://grist.org/health/climate-change-is-undoing-decades-of-progress-on-air-quality/

Yes change kills, by some estimates as many as 4 million people so far. Not in some major Day After Tomorrow catastrophe, but just via regular ol' air pollution.
