The challenge is the monetization aspects, the 10K seed funding initiative is cute but won't solve the problem of distributing funds to creators.
With Pixelfed, we could add support for "buy links" that redirect to a 3rd party store/platform, eliminating much of the complexity of doing this, but like you said, "pixelfed is nothing like Deviantart"
This is to appease some well-meaning but overtly Christian and out-of-touch family members. Something for a 12yo who reads well above his age, along the lines of inspiration/motivation for teens to be good humans and members of society
Rather than have them pushing propaganda on my son I’d like to find a worthwhile read they will feel addresses the insufficient Christian influence in his life
Has Christian undertones but is a beautiful book AND it's about ants. It's an old book and out of print but I was surprised by how deep it was. You see ants know how long they will live so the ant reflects on the purpose of life and "the beauty of the work of the creator" in the last chapters. It's also about cooperation and service.
Don't get one of those ugly reprints, get a used copy with the old school binding.
@ScribblersEmporium@kaleb Okay, if we're going that route, then: George MacDonald's Phantastes/Lilith (I read them a lot as a kid, weird but interesting), Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place/I Stand at the Door and Knock, also Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time trilogy. I also read Pilgrim's Progress a lot but can't imagine it appealing to a kid who is not locked into a limited churchy life.
(My teen has not read any of these but he is having a very different upbringing than I did.)
Dear @potus, I am excited to see you joining the fediverse, but I question your decision to join Threads.
Please consider committing to #OpenGovernment by creating @potus this will allow you to reach all #Threads users as well as the millions on #Mastodon#Misskey#Friendica#Pixelfed#Lemmy and more with just one account and without favoring a commercial endeavour that still has the power to censor you.
I’m bummed that this is happening at the same time as #Ragbrai and #AirVenture, but for anyone into #Ubuntu who has neither their head in the clouds nor butt on a bike saddle, I recommend checking out this year’s North America #UbuCon in #GreenBay.
This video perfectly answers the many language related questions I’ve had about maybe someday moving to Quebec. It’s a great watch even if, like me, you’ll never realize the dream. 🥺
This is super exciting to see, I had no idea these existed as off-the-shelf cargo conversion solutions. Please share your experiences with these our similar options.
I understand that an instance doesn’t federate with another instance until someone on the second instance is subscribed to the first. But why am I unable to subscribe to make this federation happen?
If you’re looking for some longer form content on cities, transit, technology, and other off-topic ideas check out @reecemartintransit He just moved off Substack and has embraced federated Wordpress
Nebula creators, what do the economics of legacy subscriptions and lifetime memberships look like to you?
My subscription is $30/yr, while current rate is $50. Yet it looks like it will renew at the $30 dollar rate. I suspect long-term subscribers have a different value calculation to you the creators/owners than short-term. And is the $300 lifetime deal really that great for you?
Lifetime is being used to create new Nebula Originals and to improve the platform itself. It's a much, much better alternative to venture capital funding. This helps make Nebula more successful without selling any part of the company.
Annual is the "best" deal for the user, provided the cost doesn't go up substantially and/or and you're subscribed for less than 10 years.
It's an unanswerable question which is best: "it depends"
@kaleb a bunch of reasons. I know a few creators over there and tried getting an intro, but got blown off. At the time I believe they (Standard.tv) also required you to use them for brand deals (no interest in that). I also have questions/concerns over how the rev share works for newer creators vs. the original/core group. I’m not against being on Nebula (would be interested), but would need to talk to them again … but like I said, I got radio silence from them last time I tried.
Seventeen years ago when I moved to #Madison we celebrated #HippieChristmas. This dubious holiday was observed mid-August when downtown student focused leases ended; even those signed up for another year were out on the curb for at least 12 hours with their stuff. This led to a lot of furniture simply left on the curb becoming treasures for those unafraid of salvage.
The quality, but dated furniture that was once left on the curb has been replaced by particleboard crap.
A wonderful video on Québécois from the enchantingly sarcastic Loïc Suberville. Now if only @duolingo would give us a Québécois course I might be able to understand what all those friendly Canadiens are saying.
Back when I commuted by bike it was easy to get 257-320 km in per week. Now I that I work from home, I have to remind myself to get on the bike.
That said I’ve done pretty well this year at getting in at least one 30 km ride each week. Whether chasing coffee, pizza, or beer – with or without friends – I love being on 2 wheels.
Since I started sharing videos of my bike rides with non-biking friends and families, the responses and observations I’ve received have been a real nice way to change the conversation away from the antagonism of the #WarOnCars or #OnlyCars mindset.
Today my father asked me why I take such indirect routes…”can’t you get there faster by just going down E Washington?” While I will ride in almost any traffic, including E Wash, it’s nice to explain what good infra looks and feels like. And have the opportunity to explain why it’s not safe or comfortable for most riders to use the bike lanes on arterials like E Wash
Maybe simple videos can help them ride a mile in my shoes.
Who else hosted family for (US) Thanksgiving yesterday only to have them call after leaving to tell you they tested positive for COVID?
Thankfully, those in my household are very recently vaccinated. While not invincible, it should mitigate the effects.
There is a distinct lack of concern for others within certain politically aligned groups. While it could be chalked up to malice, I feel it’s more likely negligent apathy.
