.com aims to delegalize game publishers thanos-snapping games you've paid real money for when they feel like it. Exactly what Ubisoft recently did with The Crew.

MattKC has a great short video about it:

Now is the best chance for us to have governments make laws protecting games from systemic destruction!

@profoundlynerdy Having a backup does nothing. The game calls to a remote server. And without that server, the game will refuse to work. This is very common in the industry.

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@profoundlynerdy Imagine a car manufacturer ending support for their older vehicles... You sit in your car, you turn the keys and nothing happens.
Or your television set showing an error and refusing to play anything because the company "ended support". People have physical copies. They have discs with the game and it refuses to work.

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@profoundlynerdy The Crew isn't a special game in this regard. This happens all the time. However, it's a very popular game. And Ubisoft is a French company. France has strong consumer protection laws. This game opened a possibility to finally set a good precedent here. It's now or never.

@nuekaze Yes. Or at least "the product must be patched to remain functional without the 1st party network service".

@Codeberg If anybody is attempting to - please design a system that doesn't reward egomaniac abusive moderators :P

@Sibshops @Codeberg Yeah, LLMs are a bit different than Stack Overflow. Sure, they don't insult you for asking questions, but they can't refuse to answer, so will happily give you nonsense if they have no idea. Not entirely unlike some people... ;)

Audience question: How do we make sure that free tools keep being developed?

Emi: Donations.

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@godotengine Donations coming in is one thing, but I'd want to see more tansparency in spending and ways for contributors to get a piece of the pie for doing the work. Waiting for that first Foundation report ;)
Maybe a feature/bug bounty system could work?

If you've worked with Godot to make 3D games you probably had trouble getting your characters behave reliably. If you were working on a movement-based game for any amount of time, you've probably felt the pain.

This here shines light on why exactly that is.

https://github.com/godotengine/godot-proposals/discussions/9646

There is hope for fixing Godot's character physic! Come over, and get involved!

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@Bimbam_tm @mihe It'd be a good starting point, but not all of it. Jolt cannot go beyond what Godot's core provides it with. So Godot's physics core needs to be fixed to provide reliable and complete information first.
Freeman goes into detail in the article about it :)

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@Woodcat No. A non-constructive (a.k.a non-actionable) feedback would be "this sux, wtf are you doing?!?".
Freeman's breakdown goes into tight details of what is broken, why it is broken and what needs to be there instead. That is actionable, you can post on Godot website and socials about a paid position for a physics programmer and get this done. We need someone who knows C++, knows or can learn Godot codebase and has at least a basic grasp on game character physics. The hard research is done.

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@Woodcat Also if you see something that can be done about this issue, you can contribute to it yourself. Spreading the word is the easiest way. Talking to devs and Freeman about who to hire and then seeking such people online is something you just pointed out yourself. Without Freeman's write-up there wouldn't be much to go off of. Freeman got the ball rolling. Complaining that he didn't do everything already isn't very constructive of yourself, would you agree? You can do better than that! :)

unfa,
@unfa@mastodon.social avatar

@Woodcat Have fun remaining idle and criticizing people who take action from the heights of your keyboard throne room. I don't have time for that. Bye!

Brackeys was one of the most valued educational creators for Unity game engine.
He retired a few years ago and stopped.making tutorials. After the Unity Runtime Fee happened and broke all trust with the company's management - Brackeys broke his silence and announced that he is starting to learn Godot.

Today, 2 hours ago Brackeys has published his first Godot tutorial...

I have been reminded that Brackeys retired way before the Runtime Fee debacle. Sorry for my mistake, I have corrected it now. Thanks to everyone who pointed out the error!

WAIT, THE NEW ABOMINATION OF A YOUTUBE LAYOUT IS GONE

i think it finally happen. Google made an interface so worse than before than not even they could handle it. It was too much power.

Old Youtube layout is quietly back.

If I had way more time on my hands, I'd get down to the nitty-gritty and try to implement this in .

This is the only decent resource I could find about how are modern done in engines.

I believe it was on 's channel a couple years back, but such incredibly valuable talks seem to sometimes be taken down.

Remember Kung Fury?
The crowdfunded, excellent 80s martial arts film spoof that is so absurd, it breaks the cool meter?

The full-length movie - Kung Fury II - has been in limbo for years due to an investor screwing the production team over after they finished filming.

But the film crew prevailed, and the movie is near!

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5765844

David Sandberg has proven to be an excellent writer, director and actor, so I am pretty sure this movie will be a classic too :)

Release poster for the 2015's short film "Kung Fury" written, directed and starring David Sandberg (who plays the main role).

@mooklepticon That was in August 2023. Nothing new came out since then. I am afraid this movie is never coming out. If it is, it's not worth waiting for it.
It's sad.
